I’ve had bunion on my right foot for about 10 years. Watched this video seems like a year ago or close. Got better fitting shoes and did all the exercises every day and sometimes several times a day. And it was getting better, but today there was a difference. Had a little crack like cracking your knuckles in my foot. No pain whatsoever associated with it. And suddenly my toe is straight, no pain, I can walk straight and fully extend my foot. It’s like a miracle. Thank you so very much. I’ll continue the exercises for sure. And I also watch all of your videos and you’ve helped me in so many ways. You’re incredible in how you’re helping others. Thanks again.

Dancer/Runner here and have had Bunions my whole life. Started wearing a toe spacer for the last 10 years in every shoe I wear and it has gone down at least half the size . It's taken time but worth it! Get a toe spacer that's meant for ballerinas they work the best! DO IT you won't be disappointed. The spacer and stretches together are a life saver for the pain.

Dr. Berg, I am a Chiropractor also. I gave up on tennis balls. I much prefer Racket balls for patients. They don’t slide on the floor or walls. They are gentle but effective. @@Sleepy_Crabe My bunion is now HUGE. The foot without the surgery looks normal. The doctor told me if I had the bunion surgery my big toe of the left foot wouldn't slant toward the other toes. Well it does now, quite a bit. Throws off my other toes. Affected my ankle big time which in turn affected my knee. My yoga teacher informed me the big toe is the stabilizer for our balance so it's also affected my posture. I have had PT and he told me I should've been in for treatment within a week of surgery. My doc told me NOT to do PT....LOL wanted to sue my surgeon but she was married to a lawyer. Waste of time anyway. I'd follow Dr. Berg's exercises religiously!!

Bunions are typically correlated with flat feet/flexible arch which may also be causing your knee pain. The pain at the bunion is typically from shoe pressure at the bunion. Try wearing athletic shoes with a soft mesh upper and a stiff sole and add in an arch support. Make sure you’re wearing the correct size shoe. You should have at least 1\2 inch from the end of your big toe to the end of the shoe when standing. You can also use a bunion pad to protect the bone in shoes. You can see a foot specialist for orthotics or to discuss corrective surgery. Best of luck.

I had stage 4 bunions on both feet before I was 30. I’ve always worn wide, comfortable shoes. I’m not impressed by fashion, I did what made my feet less painful. I’m a medical professional who was on my feet for years, narrowly sitting each shift for minutes. I was also an avid mountain climber, but had to tape my toes before each hike. Surgery was my only option as both feet were beyond what you describe here. After recovering from surgery, no more pain, or taping needed. I was non-weight bearing for 6-7 weeks. I’m 66 years old now and by far that was the best decision I’ve made to increase my quality of life. BTW, I was normal to small in build, ate clean, and always wore the correct shoes for this problem. I would be curious to see someone with an advanced bunion “cure” it by following your recommendations. I think most of your videos are helpful, but I’m very skeptical of your opinion in this case. Respectfully. Leenie

Imho one might need to look at any muscles that might be causing hip rotation. Ie tight glutes. Muscle imbalances can cause one to walk duck toed which would cause the great toe to be pushed over toward the next toe.

I am a retired medical professional also. First bunion was from a fall. Broke a toe, and chipped metatarsal. 36 years ago and also opposite foot broke little toe 19 years ago. I wear toe spacers and do exercises and have now started massage. No surgeries, and where you drift with large toe, I am not as bad. Will not do surgery for either foot and I am almost 70.

I’ve had bunions for years, wore the wrong shoes when working for so many years, so I am paying the price. There is only very occasional pain that goes away quickly. I’m 73 years old and would never have bunion surgery after hearing the horror stories from at least 4 people I know that had the surgery. Will definitely try Dr. Berg’s exercises.

Very interesting! I feel that the major cause of my bunions has been my gait, I am a little bow legged and I walk with my toes pointing outward, not directly under my knees. Your case seems to be an extreme, so maybe surgery was the best option, but I think doing the exercises can only benefit us, regardless of surgery.

I’ve had a bunion since I was a little kid. Became much worse and painful as I grew. I went to a podiatrist and the Dr. told me that it was genetic. Which both my parents do have. And yes, other things described in this video do enhance the bunion. I had to have surgery to have the bunion removed. For the surgery, the foot is opened up. The bunion shaved off. The big toe bone is broken, then realigned. A small metal piece is put in place on the big toe bone to keep it straight. You are obviously on conscious under surgery. Recovery is uncomfortable. But SO worth doing. Did the surgery over 5 years ago. Not one problem. Best thing I did to get rid of the pain/ bunion on my foot. It is a medical problem. My insurance paid for the surgery. I also wanted to ad; If you're think of doing the surgery for bunion removal, make sure you do a background check on the Doctor. That the Doctor is experienced in doing the surgery. I had it done here at the Cleveland Clinic from a reputable Dr. who actually specializes in bunion removals. Again, had it over 5 years ago. Not one problem.

Much of what you state is inaccurate! Bunions are typically genetic foot /ankle bone structural issues. The metatarsal and ankle have too much mobility. My grandmother, daughter, niece and myself have it! It began to develop around age 12! It wasn’t from wearing heels- though doing so can increase the pain associated with it. None of us have flat feet😊 !! My daughter developed pre teen as well. I had Lapiplasty at age 57! So glad I did!!

I can count the amount of times I've worn heels in my life with my 2 hands. Even if it's genetic, strengthening the muscles, moving, and stretching your feet/toes is still beneficial for strong mobile feet (:

In my experience, consulting a podiatrist saved me. Flat feet and Ankle pronation have been the problem and this is hereditary . I have plastic orthotics in my shoes and I use toe spacers between the big toe and second toe. My podiatrist provided strengthening exercises and stretches. These measures have arrested the development of bunions. I don’t have back, hip and knee pain and my legs are straight. In addition to Dr Berg’s advice re exercises, I strongly recommend a consult with a good podiatrist first before seeing a surgeon. Correct alignment from the feet up is so important. Avoid unnecessary bunion surgery, when the biomechanics in your feet, ankles, knees, hips and your spine can be corrected through a podiatrist. Some people would not have had success with these orthotics as I have or had a bad experience with podiatrists, but it pays to do the research. I see my podiatrist annually and have been for 20 or so years. My orthotics are reviewed to see if further modifications are needed or need to be replaced . If uncorrected, progressive joint problems can develop.. which may lead to joint replacement.

I just had bunion surgery and I am seriously in the 7th level of hell with pain. And then.......I listen to this video can't believe I put myself through this! After you finished speaking I just sat there and stared at the screen in disbelief Oh how I wish I had sought out your information first!!!!

My left foot is flat and I've noticed the development of a bunion so this video is very helpful. I'm going to start working on these exercises asap. I do have weak ankles and leg muscles so this will help. I'd like to recommend a brand of sock called Happy Feet that is designed to separate the toes and straighten them back out. They have helped me when I use them. I've found its hardest to separate the last two toes the most but after few minutes I feel a lot of relief. I've also found that a brand of shoe called Xero Shoes has helped me strengthen the muscles in my feet and I've gotten back a bit of my arch in the left foot. These shoes are very flexible and allow your feet to move naturally and flex.

I've developed a bunion on my right foot, after 40 years as a hospital RN, on my feet A LOT. My main issue now is the difficulty finding comfortable shoes. I have an old pair of Sketchers that fit like a glove. Expensive, but worth every cent. No more high heels for little (4ft. 10ins) me.

Thanks so much for this, Dr. Berg! I have the exact opposite problem. My little toes -- which have been broken many times -- are in constant pain. I was moving furniture last weekend, and now I can hardly bear to put weight on my feet. I'm using a pillow under my feet as I sit here at the computer desk. I will work through the recommended exercises and try to strengthen up the muscles, and possibly look for wider shoes.

@drjlrust is it possible le your little toes were never set properly after being broken? This happened to me, it took me quite some time to discover the problem. That was why they kept breaking, in my case. Next time it broke, I took a deep breath and pulled the toe long as hard as I could then released to set, then taped it tightly to next toe for 8 weeks, no less, changing tape as needed. Never had another problem. With it, it's been 20 years. Good luck!

Great video. Wished I would of seen this when my bunion first started. I have been wearing orthopaedic and orthotics for 60 years. Yes I have flat feet, heel spurs and the bones in my feet move easily. My bunion is pushing all my toes to the right. I have real trouble getting g shoes cause I also have wide feet. Now I need to find a shoe with more of a square toe. Thanks so much for your advice and exercises. I have been doing a few of them for years to losing up my ankles. Cheers 🇨🇦🌷

Dr. Berg is a very smart, and wonderful person for what he does. But the only true living savior is Jesus Christ, he is the only true person that can give you life, he has given us all life actually. And he gave up his life so that we could have eternal life, I pray that you with understand how important this is, because there is not a single person in the world that deserves this credit more then Jesus. You will have eternal life by believing these things. God bless 💕

I’m definitely starting these exercises tomorrow (currently 3:04 AM)! I injured my right big toe in Taekwondo as a teen and I’ve developed bunions due to the sport. My right foot was also broken in a car accident January last year. I had a “boxer’s” break in my right hand and severely fractured my calcaneus and had to have surgery. The swelling from the fracture went up into my ankle and so I believe I have nerve damage from that. My ankle still feels weak and I still can’t wear heels 😭 I think these exercises will help me strengthen the muscles that are still weak from atrophy and I hope to fix my bunions too! 🌸

I had a bunion on my right foot (just to the left of the toe) for maybe 10+ years. My right foot is just under an 11 and I wear 10 1/2s as my left foot is a fraction under 10 1/2. I think maybe this plus the narrow leather office shoes I used to wear were the cause. Last 2-3 years it got quite big and red and I was embarrassed to wear sandals; the bump was easily visible outside of my shoe. Thought the only way to fix would be surgery. Thankyou Dr Berg - I tried your exercises twice a day (morning when I wake and evening when I go to bed) and the darned thing has reduced 90% and is nearly gone. It took longer though - I am now in month 2. It started to reduce already in the first week by maybe 20% and the redness started to disappear. But for the first month I thought something bad had happened as my toe & second toe started hurting as well as the pads underneath and especially when walking. I figure it was probably the whole situation normalising and now the pain is much much reduced. I am wearing my sandals again and will continue to exercise both feet - it must be good for maintenance into my old age. Who would have thought !?!?! Thankyou so much again !!

Hello Dr. Berg, (I don't have bunions), I just wanted to suggest a video idea. Over the years, you have frequently had recommendations regarding blood work, blood tests, telling the ranges, and explaining what they mean. I have several in my notes. I want to have a blood test, and I want to test every little thing. A comprehensive blood test, listing all the necessary panels to have done, and how to interpret the findings would be a great video. Sidebar: I want to get my iron tested before I give my first blood do action. It is said that most men have too much iron, and it is difficult to rid the body of iron. One health advocate says iron is the most important factor in health evaluation.
