To give a picture of what prolonged fasting did to me I was 5'5" tall at 185 pounds. I intermittent and prolonged fasted 52 pounds off to 133. It was a miracle in that all my visceral fat was removed however I did have atrophy, especially in the thighs and glutes. Through Thomas DeLauer and Dr. Bergs videos I have managed to build all muscle (plus some) back. I still intermittent fast after 16 months on an 18:6 plus weight train and I can tell you it is possible to put on lots of muscle while staying lean. Now for the unbelievable part, I did this at 59 through 60 years of age.

I have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (Thickened heart wall.) Fasted for 15 days. The next time I got my heart scanned, my Cardiologist called me in. When he came in he said my heart wall had thinned by 2mm, which he considered nothing short of a miracle. Been a believer in healthy prolonged fasting ever since. Food is killing us, moderation is key. Of course I had the fat to burn during prolonged, I wouldn't recommend if you're very thin.

I mainly did a calorie deficit keto with daily calorie intake of around 500-700 calories only. Eggs and cucumbers were my main food. Initilaly i felt very hungry but after 3 days I felt better and my appetite was gone. I also did water fast in between. Bulk weight of 15 kilos was lost in just 40 days and then i slowed things down so it took me overall 6 months. This worked for me but take caution for whatever you do.

I am glad you made a video of this. I took a break from intermittent fasting because I lost almost 6kgs in 3 months. Someone I know who also watches this channel is so into it, almost religiously and it's kinda scary the extent he goes. It's about balance I think. I agree, while the general benefits of fasting, keto/carnivore to me is a good thing taking it too far in terms of rigidity would seem to be too much in removing yourself from the joys of life. We can remain self-aware and vigilant without overdoing it.

I love how he provides everything in context. Just because prologned fasting is good and promotes many diferent health benefits, doesn't mean that there aren't negative consequences if done wrongly, or if you have a certain condition. I, for one, may not be the best candidate for prolonged fasting, especially if it's very long like several weeks, because I'm already kind of a slim guy with not that much muscle, in the first place.

@@NewDarkKnight - yep, bone broth is perfect. No carbs and a little protein with no fiber or anything difficult to digest. Some say eggs, as well, but for some, it can upset the stomach. Just no fruit or carbs is the important piece. After fasting for so long, you don’t want anything that will really trigger either major insulin release (sugar/carbs) and nothing that will majorly mess with electrolyte balance.

This came at the right time. I just did a 1 day water fast. I've had difficulty with my diet for a few years, having a chocolate addiction and having severe adrenal fatigue (or exhaustion) for a little over 5 years. Tried IF and keto to help me get my health back and the muscles & hair I lossed and the bellyfat I got instead due to the stress overdose. Which was extra stressful being a 49yr woman (then 44). Been doing OMAD for more than a year (sometimes 2MAD). Trying to combine it with keto but then fail because of the (excessive) chocolate intake. I gained a lot of weight & more fat because of the sugars and extra calories. Haven't eaten chocolate in 3 days now (haven't gone out because of the heavy rainfall) and decided yesterday to the a 24hr water fast. I haven't craved for chocolate (yet), but do have a headache. The feminine body figure I had before the adrenal fatigue is gone and now looks like that of an overweight grandmother with no muscles and no strength. I've recently done a bloodtest/energy test which showed extreme deficiencies. I only took GABA, B12 and magnesium bisglycinate (maybe incorrect spelling) because of the costs, not sure if any of it was the cause but within 2 days I had severe hairloss (like the hair follicles were loose). When I stopped after the vitamin batch was finished (ca 45 days), the extreme hair loss stopped after a few days/weeks. Now I have normal hairloss, probably also because I have been working on stress/trauma/psoas release excercises daily. A healthy diet and especially the right diet for me is still something I have to discover. More important is becoming more aware and listening to my bodies intelligence. Something I have neglected for many years. Thank you for sharing your findings and your opinions. And thank you for giving me an opportunity to express myself.

I disagree with the idea of taking amino acids during a prolonged because this will kick you out of autophagy. Autophagy is THE most important benefit of fasting. Some of the deep benefits of autophagy may not be experienced until after 10 days of a prolonged fast. Some people report the most noticeable benefits of autophagy after 14 days. Not sure why you are so concerned with a little muscle loss, as generally muscle tissue is preserved during a fast. OK, I totally agree with your comments on cancer--I should have listened to the whole lecture before commenting. Anyhoo, thanks for your hard work and extremely valuable information. I'm on day 4 of a water fast right now (2023-1-7) and experience a lot of stomach gas and burping. I can not find good info on why this may be occurring. Last year I stopped a water fast after 9 days mostly due to the excessive burping. I've tried a little ACV or lime juice, not sure if that helps or not. I will press on this time regardless of the stomach gas. Cheers.

Good info Dr. Berg! A lot of people don’t know about autophagy. The year I started keto when I found Dr. Berg is the year I learned from Dr. Mindy about the word autophagy. She taught me about Yoshinori Ohsumi… Japanese cell biologist who won the Nobel prize in 2016 for his research on the recycling and renewing of cells in the process of Autophagy. I was blown away by this! So much so I didn’t even tell my hepatologist (he was talking about putting me on a liver transplant list )that I was doing keto and that I had learned this miraculous process! Between doctor Berg teaching me healthy keto and intermittent fasting and Dr. Mindy teaching me how to prolong autophagy fast I was able to reverse my liver back to stage F0. Two of them saved my life. I had to work hard it took me three years. But I did it I can never think them both enough. And Dr. Berg had I not found him I would be dead. I believe in him and I believe in her more than anyone else keto. They’ve never steered me the wrong way. At times have even given me personal advice whether they remember me or not they both have done it and I appreciate it so much❤

You must _use_ your lean mass to retain it while fasting. This means light cardio, weight training, and body weight exercises. Additionally, you must get ample protein while _not_ fasting and especially in association with time-restricted eating. The HGH your body automatically up-regulates will keep you from breaking down lean mass during your fast, if you use it. My mistakes were eating "moderate protein" on keto between fasts and failing to do resistance training.

What did you eat in particular and how much? Im only asking because I simply don't know what was consumed. Carbs and sugar are a big "no no". If you're eating leafy greens , finding healthy proteins , and you throw in a multi vitamin in there for good measure, you should be good. Also fasting isn't for everyone . Some bodies are built better genetically for it than others. Regardless, monitor your consumption and take note of it, then visit a health care professional to steer you in the right direction. Lol..I think This is what "Ignited" an anti inflammatory response, as I noticed less and less Sciatic nerve pain each day ! Somehow, It also gave me the desire and discipline to start this new "routine" ! Only a year ago, I struggled to walk one block ! However, after staying with I F, keto and the occasional Omad, I feel like a new man. I now exercise with weights and do cardio at least 4-5 x week. Also doing pushups...maybe 40+ per day. My A1C is back to normal and have lost over 70 lbs.in about 8 mos. Still a way to go, but my doc was impressed..lol.I can't Thank you enough Dr.Berg !👍👍👍

I had contracted genital herpes from a partner back in 2006. I used to get outbreaks every 3 to 5 months. In 2019, I discovered fasting and did a 20-day water and dry fast. To my astonishment I had gotten rid of the herpes. I never in my wildest mind thought that this would have been a side effect of fasting. I had no idea that that would happen. As of this day I haven't had a single outbreak since. That type of fasting is difficult at times, but it's a daily discipline with goals in mind to keep you propelling forward to finish it. I'm very grateful.

I've spent so much time of the little time I have actually scouring other KZbin channels trying to get snippets of information and reading between the lines when you just lay it all out in one vlog. I'd say I'm currently about 35lbs overweight from being slim again to the eye (will still be classed as obese when you punch in the numbers because I'm weirdly very heavy for my size) so prolong fasting should hopefully work for me. I was concerned whether I would lose more muscle than fat since that's what many others seem to stipulate but you've put my mind at ease now and with a clear plan. Thank again.

I highly recommend stressing the importance of not being sedentary while fasting for the sake of preventing muscle wasting. Mere walking 10,000 steps, or other non-strenuous, anaerobic exercise such as light lifting, cleaning, will help. Secondly, squatting down and standing up will provide an indicator with how hydrated or dehydrated you are. The more you get the dizzying effect from standing quickly from a squat, the more likely you may be suffering from low electrolytes and/or water.

Yeah skin is mostly collagen protein, fasting reabsorbs excess skin (unlike most other weight loss programs), I also use witchhazel to tighen the skin and IR lamps. Prolonged fasting every few months is probably the best preventative of many health problems, as long as a person really knows what they are doing and has the motivation to do it, but pound of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Remember the number #1 rule while fasting, is not to talk about fasting, or food, or watch media with food pictures and ads.

My biggest problem with fasting and Keto is constantly having low blood pressure and almost fainting.

Supplements you can take while doing prolonged fasting: • Electrolytes (with plenty of potassium) • B vitamins (nutritional yeast) • Sea salt (no less than 1 tsp) • Vitamin D (or get plenty of sun) • Omega-3 fatty acids (cod liver oil) • Natural vitamin C (if fasting for a week or longer) • Natural vitamin E (if fasting for a week or longer) • Amino acid blend (on the fourth day)

Same here, I am diagnosed with breast cancer and tried to do the prolong fasting and OMAD. I lost 5kg in 1 week. I am very skinny and feeling week, heart beating fast and also my lips are chapped although I drink 2500ml water and a big bottle of green tea every day. I don’t know what I should take during my fasting in order to improve.

FEELING VERY DISCOURAGED!!! I have been refraining from making a comment for a long time because I'm very patient and just thought my body would take longer to see results. I would really like to know if anyone has had a similar experience. I have been fasting one meal a day every day for months. My body must be stubborn so I stepped it up several times in different ways and ultimately for the last 3 months I've been water fasting 5 days once per month, 48 hours once per week, one meal a day on the other days, zero sugar, strength training two times a week, light walking 5 days a week. I am a 48 year old female that has about 15 lb to lose. I gain and lose the same 8 lbs every time I prolong fast. I take supplements every day to include electrolytes. Why am I not losing weight??

Too much fasting slows the metabolism to compensate so you will have to fast more and more or reduce calories further. This is a bad place to be and the only way out is to stop fasting and increase calories particularly protein. Look up reverse dieting. You will obviously gain weight but if you're strategic and lift weights regularly most of the weight will be muscle and your metabolism will skyrocket.

Try not to get discouraged; its a killer. Just wondering, you say "no sugar", but are you avoiding all refined grains? Pasta, some breads, anything with flour, etc all have "no sugar" but quickly break down into glucose and cause a big insulin spike. Good luck.

This is where I give the Dr criticism on fasting as well as keto- your body will adjust to both, IF being the most impactful. Your metabolism will slow significantly, and since your diet is primarily the ingestion of fats, your body will store the access calories from slowed metabolism, ultimately resulting weight gain weight over time. Some people's body will adjust sooner than others , but the overly point is that you will adjust, and it's pivotal to know how to "wing" off of it when your metabolism slows. It has great health benefits, but as far as weight management, it's definitely NOT a long-term solution.

You've clearly fallen inside the trap! You've over thought this and now you've reached a plateau, basically everything in your body is unsynchronised from what I read. Ease up, take control, indulge in some cases, no extremities, no overtraining and most important of all, get your mind off of this whole ordeal! Stress is the ultimate poison to our mind and body! Then, you'll come back to it with knowledge, like a badass and with a vengeance.
