I’m not too old to wear anything, I’m 64. I’m happy about my figure and I have good legs, even the skin, thanks to my two Grandma’s “great legs DNA” and me keeping my weight to a healthy one, 125 lbs. I wear short skirts/dresses or shorts almost every day, why not? I’m not too crazy about my wrinkled arms, it’s from aging-related collagen loss, not “lack of toning/exercise” and genes, some women get this more than others, or earlier or later than others. But, that doesn’t stop me from wearing sleeveless tops when I need or want to. We can’t help aging, so why should we feel ashamed? Men don’t!

For me, it's some of both. I only wear clothes because it would shock other people if I didn't. 😊 I wear dark colors for serious occasions, light, happy colors for family get togethers, and generally I wear what's appropriate. So, yes, I wear what I think will please other people, to a point. But if they want to take away my pink, heaven help them!

Depending on your personal style, I don't see a denim jacket as an age thing. If your style has changed and you no longer have as casual a style, then I can see it, but if your style is still natural and casual, I don't think it can look wrong.

I just asked myself that yesterday. I had bought a pair of Levi wide leg jeans a year ago and questioned myself if I was too old to wear them. I just turned 66 in May. So, I ironed them, yes, I like to iron, always have. I don’t care much for steamers, they stress me out, lol! Anyway, at the last minute I ironed a back up pair of jeans. After my shower I put them on with a plain Banana Republic Factory V neck t-shirt and their white sneakers. I did my minimal make up, my hair and added a small pearl and gold chain necklace, small pearl earrings and small pearl and gold bracelets. I rocked that look. My other jeans are waiting for me to wear today and I’m questioning if I should wear them with a tank top or button down shirt. I actually braved it this week and wore a tank top for the first time in years out in public. I was not only proud of myself but also felt good in it.

Sage advice Kay. As I have aged (retired), I have noticed how little anyone cares what I wear. It doesn't matter much in any real way so it is a great time to wear what truly suits you, including items like bows, ruffles, and bold prints.

I do avoid a lot of those little-girlish details like ruffles, flounces, puffed shoulders, Peter Pan collars, etc. I need sophisticated clothing and I love classic tailored items in 100% natural fibers and materials, and in feminine, mostly light, neutrals and colors. I like classic prints, too, like dots, stripes, checks and tartan and a few very carefully selected floral/foliage prints. I avoid shopping at those mature brands, the use a lot of old-ladyish styles like big long shirts and cardigans, tunic tops, skinny jeans and 3/4-sleeves. The too-bright colors and novelty prints aren’t modern and the prints and accessories are scaled for much bigger women, I’m petite and slender. I do buy the occasional item at Talbot’s, usually basics, so long as they’re not so long as to be unflattering (not every item comes in Petite, unfortunately). I always show my waist by tucking in all my tops or wearing waist-length ones. Those long tops hanging down to the thighs are the most aging thing ever, especially in florals. Don’t hide or tent your female shape, show it, it’s beautiful at any age or weight!

This is such a relevant video. Four years ago I asked myself the question, "Am I too old to wear shorts?" I was 63 years old. I Googled that question and it was then I was brought to a KZbin influencer (my first). Well here I am four years later and I am rocking shorts, mostly the Bermuda silhouette. I wear them more often now because I live in Scottsdale, AZ where it is scorching hot. My main concern was my imperfections on my legs, you know the varicose veins, etc. I am more confident now and it doesn't bother me any longer. You have also made a difference in this respect for me, Kay. Thank you so much. Loved this video.

I live in Florida, also a hot climate, and can't imagine not wearing shorts. For modesty most of the body must be covered, but not legs. At 86 I sometimes wear a pair my son calls Daisy Dukes. Put on a nice Tee and long necklace and earrings and nobody seems to notice my legs--which are still not that bad. (Thank you, Mother, for the good genes.)

Before turning 40 I've asked myself whether I should stopp wearing shorts because I thought they were not appropriate any longer, although I had slim long legs and were proud of them. Now I'm 64 and what should I say? I never stopped! I've still slim long legs I am still proud of, even if they are not perfect (some little blue veins). But I don't care. I love also wearing shorts with nude tights, in my country it's possible even sometimes in summer. And it looks to me better and more put together than bare legs. 😊

I'm under 50 (45) and I wear most of the things on that list you read off at the beginning LOL What I think is most important (for what its worth), is to wear quality clothes that FIT PROPERLY. Be it a bikini or a blazer. Too big- makes you look bigger. Too small - makes you look bigger. But properly fitting... no matter the item or style... will flatter your figure the BEST.

This was a great video! I agree with everything you said! I’m petite and 73. I love wearing ruffles and bows and different shades of pink but I have to say feminine tends to be one of my style preferences. I really think it’s more about one’s body shape and style preferences than age. For example I have very unattractive knees and so I stay away from short skirts and shorts because of that. Thank you for your research!💕

I think people focus more on age instead of body type/shape. Our body shape changes. We may not be the same shape we were even as little as a year ago. A 99 year old inverted triangle wearing clothes which flatters a pear shaped body will look unflattering and it won’t have anything to do with her age. I was 5’9” about 3 years ago, but with age, my spine has compressed now and my torso is much shorter, I look very disproportionate now because I have very long legs and now such a short torso due to my spine compression (I’m in my mid 40s and have chronic bone inflammation which is why my spine compressed so quickly and earlier in life) I think age related spine compression is the main culprit why our body shape changes because it directly affects of weight distribution on the torso. Im now having to curate an entire new wardrobe because many of the pieces I had were suitable for my balanced slim built 5’9” frame, now I look frumpy if I wear my high waisted pants that I use to wear regularly 😂 Complimentary colors is also a big factor. Eg Black isn’t for everyone, it dulls the complexion of some people, while it brightens the complexion of others.

Thank you, Kay. Good discussion. I believe what was missing in that discussion is the awareness about the changes our bodies experience while we age. No body-shaming here but we need to stay aware of the changes in our own body (weight distribution, skin issues, varicose veins, etc.) that affect the way we see ourselves in the mirror. Just only this reason can be why our look from 5 years ago does not look cute on us anymore. "Outgrowing" a look is always our choice. We need to celebrate our chance to age proudly and continue with our everchanging style journey so we can dress confidently through the rest of our lives.

I think 70 is the new 40. Seems to me there doesn’t seem to be age related styles quite so much as when I was younger. Although I do see some styles that scream “old lady” at me and I try to avoid those. I do agree with you that a certain style may still look great on an older woman but not for everyone (this applies at any age I believe). Some young women look great in halter tops but not all do. It’s a case by case situation. Love your videos - keep helping us older ladies look our best. I’m 74 and think I’m doing great still and love following fashion advice. Thank you.

WOW! I love everything you said, Kay because I have often asked myself these questions over the past five years. As I'll be turning 68 in a few months, I have had to rethink some items in my closet. And, I'll be honest and say, there have been times in the past when I have yielded to comments or things I have thought someone out there would say about my outfits and decided not to wear what I really liked or thought looked good on me because of them. So, Your comments about how we should ignore the Fashion Police are priceless to me. I'll be rethinking how I make my fashion decisions from now on. They will be based on my own preferences, not someone else's. Thanks for sharing such wisdom.

I have a dress I wore to a niece's wedding in 2012 which fits me again and looks really cute and is a small dotted print which also seems modern. It is sleeveless...and I am going to wear it to a friend's daughter's wedding anyway, regardless of the upper arm swing. I have embraced those as part of my heritage and remember lovingly my Mom's upper arms that looked like that. I may lift a weight now and again, but feel no compulsion to do so for this occasion. Yes, love who you are unconditionally, as you do others.

But the A-line mid length blue denim shorts that I loved so much 5 years ago that I got them also in white, just didn't look right this year. I think this is my favorite of all your videos. I just turned 58 and aging can be hard as our bodies change. Menopause has been brutal on me and I just don’t feel like myself so what I wear plays a big part in how I feel about myself. I have other health issues so comfort is a big deal, but sometimes I feel like I have to sacrifice fashionable for comfort. Thank you for your gracious wisdom. I think this will be a game changer for me. If I like it, and I feel good in it, and it’s current then I don’t have to worry what others think of me in it. And vice versa, if I don’t feel good in it, then I don’t have to wear it and be ok with that.

Such a great video. Just this week I purchased a maxi sundress. The straps were about 1 1/2 inches wide so it was bra friendly. However it still showed a lot of skin. The sales lady gushed about how wonderful I looked in the dress. Hah! The whole time I am looking in the mirror and thinking 'look at your arms Peggy' Yes, my upper arms are not firm, aka flabby. However, I bought the dress. When I tried it on for my daughter her response was, 'Mom it is a really pretty dress. You can get some hand weights and work out and firm your arms and it would be great.' I asked and my daughter answered honestly. I am 70 and knew the hand weight thing was not going to happen! I have decided I am not comfortable showing so much skin these days. Bottom line - if you look in the mirror and are not comfortable with the outfit you have on, don't buy it, don't wear it. You will be miserable. Also with hair length. I have always loved long hair but as I aged I realized that the longer my hair was the more tired I looked. It just dragged my face down (if that makes sense). I could go on and on. Ladies, wear what makes you happy and fuels your confidence. Also. City Beauty is a great brand. I have many of their products. Have a great weekend Kay.

Great video Kay. This is the dilemma I’m facing as I will be 70 on Wednesday. I began de-cluttering the clothes in my wardrobe about 9 mths ago as I just wasn’t feeling like the styles I’d been wearing for the past 10 years suited me anymore. No more animal prints or florals. I have some new shirts and jumpers with stripes, but I’m mostly comfortable in solid colours. However… when I see photos of myself in these new clothes, I don’t recognise myself anymore. I’m happy feeling comfortable in my new wardrobe of clothes and ( reluctantly) my older body, so I guess I’m just fitting into a new and different season of my life. I bought several dresses all the same style with different prints. I try them on now and they look ok, but they’re not me anymore. They remind me of when I was ill and I associate them with how poorly I was before my surgery. I feel it’s sensible to now let them go. Thank you Kay

Spot on with this topic! My 62 year old self has had to say no to a lot of this years looks with the super short ruffled sleeves as they look ridiculous on me and accentuate the fattest parts of my arms ( I’m not fat but my upper arms don’t look like even my arms at even 40)…that being said I do see some older women in the ruffled sleeves and look fabulous!

I have just semi-retired from our family business. Now I am working from home. I love it, however all the beautiful clothes and jewelry I have are no longer being used. My wardrobe has completely changed to a much more casual look. I appreciate your honest assessment of aging and changing circumstances surrounding all of our lives which affect the clothes we wear. My clothing has always been more tailored and business orientated. I love your blouse, by the way….ordered one from McLaughlin!

Thank you for this video. I would like to share my thoughts with you. I just turned 60 in April. Your body definitely changes shape as you age no matter how many steps you take a day. LOL But this is ok you just have to adjust your wardrobe. I am meticulous about taking care of my clothing thinking I will be able to wear this for years to come. WRONG! I will try something on and it's too tight in the waist or the arms now. I am the same weight for 20 years but your actually body shape shifts. I struggle with my mid-section not being flat and tight anymore and that is something I have to accept and address accordingly to my fashion choices now. I also think mini dresses are off the table for older women unless you are small and petite. If you dress age appropriately it actually makes you look younger. I am classic/preppy style and I stick to neutral colors such as white, navy (my favorite), cream, and black. Now I do wear other colors occasionally too. But I agree as you age it is a challenge to dress to feel your best. I love your videos and clothes choices. I have bought several of your dress choices. I think Ann Taylor, Talbots, JCrew, Landsend, Macys, Nordstrom, Lily Pulitzer, Rhoback, Vineyard Vines, JJill and Garnet Hill are great stores to shop for women our age. You can still look current and fresh even when you are 60. I never want to look old and frumpy! LOL Have a great weekend!

Another thing I have noticed as I have gotten older is that clothes that are not well made don’t look as nice as they used to on me. Now I purchase fewer higher quality clothing and find that I am much happier with them long term.

Kaye, well said. When you released this two weeks ago, I was in a huge life transition--I retired. My kids were here, I had to ready my office for my successor including downsizing my professional library, and a love-filled retirement party. I saved this to "watch later." Last Monday I realized I do not have enough summer tops for two, but I had two weeks worth of summer office dresses. I am too old for that many dresses. Doesn't mean I am too old for dresses, but as a seamstress I checked my stash for tops fabric! Thanks again. 🎉

Thank you for explaining that concept, Kay- you are absolutely right! Just as a teen doesn't wear what she did at 5, we progress in what we look/feel best in. Regarding colors as we mature, can you go a little more into this? Colors to be careful of as they are thought to be more juvenile?

I personally wear long flowing skirts and 3/4 length sleeves or short sleeves in summer to stay cool as I am not willing to subject anyone to the visual truth of my 65 year old body. Fortunately I have worn sunscreen daily since my 20's, so my face is in good shape for my age. This reveals that I'm not happy about the changes in my body, but I try to look nice and keep some features to myself.

Very well put! As we get older ...body changes...but every woman is so different. What suits ones might not go for another ones. Even when we're younger. But at the same time we and our lives change Things like colours or fabrics don't have an age limit. But we ourselves can definitely see if something looks odd . I sometimes ask my husband in the shop, if he's around. He can see right away if it suits me or not

Great video Kay! I love the tip about trying things on when we look our best (hair, makeup etc). For me i have to add, not to try on items new or older at the end of the day or before going to bed. I tend to bloat through the day and at the end of the day i can be tired, or bloated, or just not in the right frame of mind. I usually do shopping or closet shopping in the mornings.

You make great points. The hardest thing is for some of us to recognize when something no longer suits us. When I was in my 40s I worked with a woman in her mid50s who wore mini skirts almost daily. She was very thin but had been a sun worshipper and the skin on her legs was saggy and hung especially on her inner thighs and knees. I didn’t think it flattered her otherwise beautiful figure. I try to remember that as a benchmark.

Great video. I am 59 and very fit. I find lately people saying I should not work out as much for 'someone my age', I should cover up more etc. I do not wear skimpy clothing, it has never been my thing, I am big boned (an MD once said I was one of the few women he had ever met who could actually say that 🤣) so that style has never looked good on me. I do however wear sleeveless and racerback tops a lot, and so many of my friends my age seem to think that is too young. I also prefer a two piece bathing suit as I have a very short torso and have a hard time finding a one piece that fits my chest (34D) and my torso.

I needed this video. Thank you for the encouragement. I will definitely try your suggestion for when looking in the mirror at an outfit and it doesn’t feel okay: Try finishing the look with shoes, accessories and hair/makeup. Then, if I still feel uncomfortable Ask Why and try to adjust it. If still not comfortable, time to reconsider it! My biggest dilemma when shopping is what I’m still drawn to from when I was 20-30 years old: lace, embroidery, eyelet, large prints, bold color. Now, I tell myself to admire and enjoy those on other people. I still wear pink- it’s one of my best colors.

Good points. I don't feel comfortable in shorts anymore. Using ankle length pants in lightweight fabrics instead. I found some cute T-shirt dresses that are knee length. Using leg makeup helps. For dog walks I wear old capris or joggers..only never as an outfit anywhere else.

This was a really good listen, Kaye - thank you for giving such a balanced viewpoint. Totally agreed with everything you said! I'm 64 and have such varicosed veined legs, I just don't want to wear shorts, swimsuits or dresses anymore even though I used to LOVE wearing them! Those days are over for me, but it's ok...I'm finding other things I like and feel confident in, and trying not to focus on what I can't wear.

I am 77 and wear shorts only on holiday, not afraid of sleeveless tops and dresses as the weather gets warmer, even although my arms are a bit saggy, but I can’t help that and I’d rather be cool. I would wear a linen jacket or cardigan in church though and on other occasions where appropriate. I think the worst thing is when older women reveal too much leg or cleavage, not a good look. Thanks for great video Kay.

Kay, We’ve been away on vacation and I’m just catching up on your video episodes. The words of advice and insight you’ve given here should be published in a booklet! I was taking in every word you spoke, nodding my head or shouting “Yes!” Years ago, a friend and fellow seamstress talked me in to having my “colors” done which was one of the smartest investments in myself I’ve made since earning my Masters in 1980! Not only did this professional Colorist provide me with my “Season” she spent 3 hours with me and I also learned what my “Style Aesthetic” was. These two keys have saved me thousands of dollars both retail shopping for ready-to-wear clothes and in purchasing fabrics for sewing my wardrobe pieces. Not everyone sews, I get that. (I make a small living sewing for those that don’t.) But, my point is, if you take the time to invest in having your colors done and pinpointing where your style aesthetic lies, you will be forever pleased with the choices you make. If you see a jumpsuit in a big, bold floral print on a tiny, petite young woman, and you are a “soft summer” with a “classic romantic” aesthetic, then go shopping for a floral jumpsuit in your color palette! I can’t wear bold, bright colors - they drown out my skin tone - so I search other sources to find the item I want in the colors I know will compliment my skin tone! Kay, you are so knowledgeable in ways to help us build a cohesive, workable wardrobe! Your advice and is so welcoming and appreciated! Sensational episode! ❤ P.S. Thank you, too, for the City Beauty link and coupon offer!

I’m currently on a weight loss journey and investing in a new wardrobe - one thing I realise that making careful curated decisions about my new wardrobe is very important.
