I had a metal shop teacher that people used to make fun of because he was a great big lumbering guy and he was kind of self-deprecating sort of fellow he would make songs out of everything so people would remember he taught all manner of metal working and he really changed my life. I as a child I was very defeated sort of fellow I never thought that I could do anything good I don't know how I got that way because my father always tried to uplift me and help me but I just didn't have a good time with things. One day my teacher came over to the brazing station where I spent a lot of time cuz I like doing projects over there and there was nobody around I think it was before class even started and he said to me I have never had a student that could braze as good as you Jeff and it's stuck with me the rest of my life it changed my life and it turned everything around for me. It is amazing what a person in a position of authority can do to uplift a child in the blink of an eye like that. He is the reason why in my present state of disability that I work with metal again because I learned to love working with metal and he told me that I could be good at it and I could be good at whatever I tried and I applied that belief in everything in my life and was successful not always but many times throughout my life and I'll never forget the man

@@mrpete222 sorry for the disjointed nature of which I wrote that I have to use voice recognition which does not always work out well. I have a neurological condition that causes this to be a necessity. I probably have told you this before but my memory isn't all that great these days And after rereading it I realize I never gave the gentleman his due his name was Mr Marx . He was a great teacher and a wonderful man and he changed my life I sure he changed other people's lives as well he was well liked despite some of the more abrasive members of our student body giving him a hard time for being a little bit Goofy. I think his goofy nature was what made him so well liked to most of us again he would make songs out of everything like to just to use a little bit of solder to solder an object he wrote a soldersong that went (just a little bit of solder is all you need not a lot just a little not a lot just a little...) and he would run around singing that while we were working. He did that with so many different aspects of applying techniques and it made it kind of fun to me but I think he did it so it would stick in our minds. I actually started thinking of him recently when I saw one of your casting videos because he was really into aluminum casting and that was his favorite time of year when it was time to teach aluminum casting to everyone I think he made excuses to do extra projects all the time LOL we had a pretty nice setup if we're doing that kind of stuff I wish I had just one of everything that I needed to do casting now I simply cannot afford that stuff anymore. It's taking me seven years to be able to afford everything I need for gear cutting because of disability and an event that has happened to me that caused me to lose my life savings a person stole the house for me but that's another terrible story that I won't go into I have rambled on way too long thank you for appreciating my story.

Mr. Pete. Horror Freight now sells a cyclonic dust collector for use before a vacuum. I had a terrible time with some designs that some KZbinrs posted and even had flames coming out of a vacuum motor. The unit they sell is very effective, comes with everything necessary other than a 5 gallon plastic bucket. I have been using a similar one for 5 years on my bead blaster and I get absolutely no dust into my vacuum, still on the same filter and it looks great. Everything is deposited into the 5 gal. bucket. The part number is 57194 and it sells for $39.99. A vacuum replacement will cost a lot higher.

Happy you emphasize safety. 44 years ago, when I was learning to sharpen HSS tool bits, I would hook my index fingers under the grinder tool rest. To this day I have a triangle-shaped scar where my finger touched the wheel and got "sucked" in. Painful lesson learned! 😂😂😂

I like the safety poster about luck! My father was an ophthalmologist in S Texas, and the nearby Celanese plant asked him for suggestions on eye safety. His recommendation was for everyone who entered the plant grounds must wear safety glasses, even the office personnel. They took the recommendation and reduced the eye injury accidents by a lot. That was about 1947.

Yes it is, that is why it is a good idea to clean it out regularly, or at least after you have been using it to suck up stuff. I wash my one regularly, mostly because I often used it in machinery, and thus it got full of old grease, swarf and other junk, so it would get a montly strip down and wash with engine degreaser, including washing the suction hose as well. Soaked in there for a half hour, then drained out, and filled partly with fresh liquid, and then run back and forth to get it agitated and scrub all the grease out, then rinse, another cycle in clean liquid, then a rinse and hang up overnight to dry on a convenient bracket. Same for the drum and fabric filter, no bags used, and every so often a strip of the motor to clean the HEPS filter on top, and put it at the bottom with a new HEPA filter on the top.

Hi, Thanks! Never had the $$ or dedicated space for a real one, so its been a 1/2in threaded adapter/arbor, worn out to them but good to me grinding & wire wheels & 1/3hp motor since 3rd grade in the late 50's, and moved up to a dual shaft dryer motor to stop constantly switching between wire & grinding wheels 40 years ago. Sometimes lower speed & less power helps out when wire brushing carbon off exhaust valves also took off a little of my flesh!

Good information. Brings me back many years to one day at work. I just finished dressing a radius on a narrow wheel. Gave the carriage hand wheel a big spin to rapid the dresser back. Forgot to tip the dresser back before doing that which exploded the grinding wheel. I was very lucky not to have been struck by rocketing shrapnel. Another wasn’t so lucky, he got a broken arm.

Great video Mr. Pete, and timely for me. I found a really nice, like new 1/2 HP Baldor 7" grinder at an estate sale for $200 (selling online for about $1300) so after YEARS in my shop with cheap grinders, I finally got a good one. I did not know most of the info about grinders you presented in your video, so it was very helpful. It amazes me sometimes how much I think I know about mundane topics and really don't.. Thanks again for the excellent lesson on grinders.

Once again Mr. Pete takes a subject most of us should well understand and fills in essential gaps with valuable information.. He does it in an informative manner that doesn't offend the individual who thinks he doesn't need the instruction. I have been using bench grinders for nearly 60 years and I picked up tips from this video that will improve my practice. Keep up this series! I have begun using a Baldor cupped wheel tooling grinder that allows both OD and side wheel grinding. The T slot tables are large and have protractor angle adjustment. Reversing motor allows grinding on the near and far fide of the wheels. My hope is this machine will facilitate my tool sharpening learning curve. I purchased a trunk load of tooling this week including poorly hand sharpened Morse taper drills up to nearly 2" I would enjoy pointers on hand sharpening these drills taking advantage of the Baldor tooling grinder. I have never mastered off hand drill sharpening and generally just replace anything under 1/2" nominal.

Wheel dresser is great for those new to you grinders with otherwise good stones, but abused. Hog off the material fast to get it close to true, and then change to the finer methods to finish off. Yes I did get the diamond point, very cheap new, was IIRC around $5 for a 1/2 carat industrial diamond in a hard steel shaft, and it has come in very handy to dress wheels, as it only removes the bare minimum of material. I do have a few grinders, the one I use the most is wall mounted on a rubber sheet for vibration, and then the other is just currently in storage, with the small one I got in a job lot also having a buff instead of the one wheel. Comes in useful, especially as I dressed it a lot to get the wheel true and lower the vibration, but it is mostly used to polish rather than grinding, unless it is something quick. Did add the shields to it, the ones it came with were mostly missing, and were clear styrene anyway, so put in some acrylic that was both larger and thicker. Cracked wheels break them in two, and use them as a way to sharpen mower blades and other garden tools, which saves somebody using the grinder for this, just have a half wheel by the garden tools, and a quick few swipes as you are getting them out makes sure you have a nice sharp edge for use, plus you can easily sharpen them in use.

This is perfect timing. I need to get a nib and make a nice wheel dresser. My friend recently passed away and his wife asked me to come over and help go through things. She told me I could take anything I wanted and he had a ton of all kinds of tools. There's an older surface grinder I still have to go pick up. I also got a Black and Decker drill bit sharpener. They call it industrial in the research I've done but I feel it's more medium grade. Nonetheless, it works so so well. It also has a diamond nib dresser but unfortunately the diamond is gone from the nib. There's a spot on the back of the machine with a clip to store the nib. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one. Take care.

Hey there Mr. Pete , really enjoying your video collection here on KZbin my friend , only thing I'm disappointed with i,is that I haven't come across your channel sooner. On the plus side I have , I am sure a large collection of new great videos to binge watch . I'm a machinist / fabricator , and you would be amazed at how little attention is given to properly tending to machine's and tools at the shops I've been employed over the last 25 year's , especially these younger guy's , not sure if you were a shop teacher at some point but I sure wish that the kids today had more access to learning how to work in shops than they have now , everything is about machines and technology , don't get me wrong I love how precise I'm able to make cuts and how clean and nice the parts come out for you , but I really think it's a mistake to not have the machinery available ,and the knowledge of how to create a part manually passed down to our future generations . Wonder how you might feel about that , perhaps a little insight in a future video from you .

I have two of the 6" and one of the 8" Craftsman grinders. The two 6" are the flat design like you have there and 1/3hp. I really like them, they don't bog down like the newer grinders do and if you take your time you can find them locally for cheap, I think I paid around $35 each for them. My 8" Craftsman is 1HP and I paid $75 for it on a local listing as well and it was like new. People under estimate how nice the Craftsman grinders are and you can get them really cheap if you take your time and look around.

not the usual internet smart-ass - this guy really knows his stuff - i hate the horrible wheel wheel dressers too - use the box diamond one as i have to dress green carbide as well as more common varieties of wheels. 😁😁😁

Good video and content. I was happy to see you address the grinding of aluminum (non-ferrous metals of any kind). Again for sharing.

Thanks for this much needed instructions about a machine that’s often neglected and abused. It’s a good thing you covered all the safety rules so the safety police wouldn’t come and lock you up!

Dress my wheel with a sweatshirt and a vest. Seriously, you take Mr Pete's warnings! I got too close with a sweatshirt to the wheel and lucky it wasn't worst. The vest (outerwear) also got a taste of wear and had to patch that hole. Oh! THAT dressing...

The variable speed grinders are nice for wire wheels. 3450 is too fast for them in my opinion.

I dressed a new stone for the first time in my life (before watching this video!) with the Chinese T shaped dresser. I only had my reading glasses on, and used it very lightly, for balancing the wheel. I worked great, but the white cloud of microscopic particles (Al2O3) went everywhere and caused nasty eye irritation, and even a doctors visit. Also I had a cough for a few days. No lasting damage he said, but even after 2 weeks it has not completely cleared up. Be very careful with this very agressive dust!

Sorry to hear that, yes, it is a nasty nasty dust. That’s why some people will not even the ground in the same room where they have their machines.

Good to know that the cheap crushed-diamond dresser I have is a reasonable option. (Now I need to make decent tool-rest setups for my two cheap grinders :-) => A question: You mentioned that your grinder date 3450 rpm, what do you think about slow-speed grinders? Are they useful in the machine shop. The argument is that they won’t heat the tool as quickly as higher-speed ones, but if you have to grind longer for the same amount of stock removal, does the total heating end up the same anyway?

Dressing a wheel is not my idea of fun - but like you said, it's a necessary evil. I spend 5 minutes dressing it and a half hour cleaning up! I use the Geiger Dresser and like yo , I've pretty much relegated the other styles to paperweights. I do use the one that looks like a Razor once in a blue moon, but it's not as accurate as the Geiger. I watched the first video you made about this subject years ago - but I'd bet this was a well needed subject resurrection..

I like your idea better, a guy gave me a 10 " , Craftsman, radial arm saw I converted to a grinding wheel on the left side and a sanding disk on the right, I actually sit the grinder any angle I desire and put my lathe cutting tools in a vice thats square with the table and move the vice back and forth, in and out ,
