Thank you so much for this! I used to waste hundreds of dollars buying clothes and them not being sustainable for my life. I couldn't wear most of the clothes I owned because they made me so anxious. It's taken 25 years to finally start being able to tell when something is ACTUALLY comfortable and I will wear it. You should never have to "tough it out" when wearing your own clothes, they should make you feel better or at least not cause you discomfort.

I was recently diagnosed. So i decided clothing would be the first change I make, seeing as it doesn't affect anyone else. I'm slowly buying enough overalls to wear every day. I love them sooooo much. I never have to pull my pants up, and they don't squeeze my stomach. I highly recommend Duluth, they often have sales. And they have the strechy straps too!!

Love this topic, thank you!! 💖 I’m autistic with a fashion special interest so here are my holy grail clothing items and tips to balance comfort and style: - Uniqlo heat tech. My favorites are the ballet cut long sleeve tops and the trousers. These really help me regulate my temperature and provide a layer of protection against tougher fabrics. Also the heat tech stockings have allowed me to wear dresses again 😅 Some of the styles are more compressive then others but luckily they have easy returns. - Negative Underwear bras. These are amazing and the only bras I wear now. They have sizes for sizes DD plus with a small band size which is a godsend. - Birkenstocks! I have an all black leather pair for summer and an all black fleece pair for cooler months. I think that the classic 2 strap in mono colors can look stylish. Don’t do the rugged, it’s horrible. - Ditch jeans for linen, tencel, and cotton pants with an elastic waist. They look way more classy than jeans and are way comfier. Uniqlo has some good options. If you do want to wear jeans, opt for non-stretchy styles that have a couple extra inches at the waist. It gives a cool laidback look and is pretty comfy. I know everyone’s sensitivities/preferences/budgets are different, just wanted to share what I found worked for me after many years of searching. Let me know if you are looking for a particular item in a particular price range and I’ll do my best to provide more custom recos. Eventually my goal is to start my own brand of sustainable sensory-friendly and gender-neutral clothing :)

Awesome. I'm currently on the hunt for new bras after my stockpile of my perfect bra that got discontinued well before COVID is reaching the end of its lifespan 😩 I had looked at Negative but will definitely give one a go now. Appreciate the recommendation! 💜

I watch this while trying to decide whether my worn-out leggings are too scratchy today (they’ve pilled in the inner thigh area-the part of my legs that gets most annoyed with my clothes). Mom asked for my Christmas list, and “comfy clothes that aren’t pajamas” is a whole category. This is a recurring theme for me as someone who has neither the money nor the energy to buy her own clothes. Shopping in person? Takes lots of energy, and I need someone along to help with decisions. Shopping online? I can’t feel the fabric or try the clothes on, and I know I won’t return things.

Size/fit preferences for individual clothing items is so important for me, too! It would be nice to just be able to go with some sort of standardized sizing but that just isn’t realistic… The calculated size up or down can make or break a favorite piece! Comfort is key, and shopping is complicated. 🤗😅

I'm that way with my legs. I can't stand fabric on my thighs, but a raincoat (which is uncomfortable for most people) is comfort wear for me. So I look ridiculous walking around wearing this shiny green raincoat as a dress, freezing my legs in January and sweating so much I stink in July. But it's the only thing I can wear and be happy

omg, this just recently started bothering me. growing up, i used to put almost all of my spoons into getting dressed and putting on makeup in the morning, but once i started having more responsibilities i just broke. all i can wear now are t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants, unless what i'm doing is extremely undemanding. which sucks bc i love fashion! but i just dont feel good in my clothes anymore because of my sensory issues. most if not all of my crop tops, jeans, jackets, etc... can't handle it anymore. and especially the outfit planning and having to put together an outfit and changing multiple times. just so exhausting.
@hugbloom2664
@hugbloom2664 5 ай бұрын
Making a capsule wardrobe has helped me with these issues. Doesn't have to be a small wardrobe, it's more about all the items being carefully chosen and working well with each other so fewer decisions to put an outfit together. I love it. Takes time to develop a capsule wardrobe but can be done gradually, there's really no rules.

Yes 👏👏 Sensory sensitivities and the nightmare of strangling/cutting/itchy clothing! I definitely worry about sizing up/down for comfort as I look for clothes. As a kid, I got hand-me-downs all the time and compromised with whatever felt comfortable. It was tough fighting parents on trying to not get triggered and have meltdowns whenever winter came/during special events that required dress up. Fashion is such an important statement to who I am, but I can’t compromise on tactile sensitivities. I try to find something in between…and sometimes (rarely- but sometimes) I put up with the discomfort/pain…especially if there’s nothing better at the moment. Thanks for sharing ❤

Lately I’ve been wearing a lot of oversized tie dye T-Shirts from this company called The Mountain. Their shirts are made of 100% cotton and are so comfortable! Even the tag is made of a really soft cotton that doesn’t irritate my neck. The shirt is sturdy and well made and not flimsy like a lot of fabric these days. I like having it on because it gives me the a bit of warmth and comfort while still sort of feeling like I have nothing on ☺️ lol I hate how weighted clothes can make me feel sometimes.

I have found my people! As a woman especially, being fashionable is such a big part of our lives, but right now I don't have the energy to even partake in it. It does make me feel so low in my self-esteem as someone who used to take great pride in their appearance, but I noticed even at that time in my life I couldn't wait to take the clothes off and change into something comfy (which I'm aware atypical women feel also), but having your clothing contribute to your anxiety and potentially causing an anxiety attack or making you feel slightly uncomfortable, I think, is an important distinction to make. I'm now at a point in my life where I'm fed up with looking like I put no effort into my appearance (I don't truthfully, as I'm too drained to do so), but I also don't want to sacrifice my comfort for fashion anymore, so I'm on the hunt to find that balance, and I can't thank you enough for this video. It's given me some ideas on what to look for going forward as our sensory sensitivities are very similar.

My best friend who is autistic like I am is fairly fashionable and wears a stylish (if slightly seasonally inappropriate for summer and winter) aesthetic. Me, I'm the weird girl who leaves her raincoat on all the time and looks like a little kid wearing it indoors like a dress (I just can't stand fabric on my legs, so I have bare legs in winter, my legs get cold but I'd rather have cold legs than wear pants). People used to make fun of me for wearing a raincoat all the time. I just think raincoats are so pretty and they're so comfortable. I know they make me sweat a lot in summer but the vinyl/PVC material just feels "right" against my skin.

Trust me itll help. Like the others who commented above I think its different for everyone and youll just have to try to learn what you prefer. Before I started working out I felt so horrible I knew I had to take the chance and just try because I was at such a breaking point. I started going to planet fitness late at night when nobody else was there and putting my headphones on and just zoning out felt amazing. That was 4 years ago. Now I found I personally cant work out without music, hate going to the gym when its crowded, and have a hard time doing workouts at home. Getting out of the house and working out does wonders for me, its like a form of really intense stimming for however long and you feel great afterwards 😂

Clothes are so hard. I have so many limitations on what I can wear due to sensory sensitivities and chronic pain. Everything needs to be comfortable, made of natural fibers, not too loose or too tight, no jeans, no tight waistbands, plus I wear a men's size extra small which is super hard to find. Also I only wear black. At this point I live in my Uniqlo sweatpants, t shirts, and sweatshirts. Fortunately I rarely have to leave the house, but I feel like I've lost my style and it's hard on my mental health. For anyone else who can't wear jeans but doesn't want to wear sweats out, Uniqlo has jeans called EZ jeans, they're the only jeans I can wear because they feel like sweatpants. I envy people who can wear leggings! They look so comfy.

After the pandemic started, I hit the end of my tolerance for enduring uncomfortable clothing. (I also realized I've been a high masking undiagnosed autistic person all this time, which explains SO MUCH.) I have always had issues with waistbands and belts and bra straps causing me back pain. People talk about elastic waistbands as comfortable but many of them are just horrible for my sensitive back; It's something about that thin line of pressure on my spine/lower back muscles. Ditto for regular bra straps or even sports bras that compress too much. I've basically given up on bras now and have started wearing camisoles under shirts and fun vests over shirts as an alternative. It still helps disguise any socially unacceptable details, if you get my drift, but is so much more comfortable! Lately I've been remembering some of my favourite comfy clothes from my younger years and thinking about finding similar things now. One wishlist item is a pair of loose corduroy overalls, like I had as a teenager back in the late 90s/early 2000s. They were so delightfully comfy!

I also find synthetic fabrics have a bad effect on my body chemistry. This may be TMI but synthetics like rayon, viscose, and sometimes polyester just make me stink horribly. Like, they dial up my normal sweat odour to something straight up rotten-smelling, no matter how much deodorant I wear. Not sure why but it's a really noticeable difference compared to wearing more natural materials like cotton or linen. Unfortunately the majority of activewear these days is made of those materials so I don't have a lot of viable options in that category of clothing. 😔

I have a lot of similar skin sensitivity and temp regulation issues as you’ve described. I tried Outdoor Voices after one of your other clothing videos. The exercise dress ended up not being great for me, but I adore the cross back dress and ended up getting it in four different colors, lol. I also recently bought one of the long sleeve cloud knit tops, and I’ve worn it everyday since I got it. Hoping they stock more colors in the future. Other staples of my wardrobe include bodyshaping camisoles with build in bras that I size up so that they are tight to my body but in no way constricting. Additionally, 90% of my life is spent wearing NY&Co boot cut yoga pants in petite. I’m only 5’2” and their petite sizing is perfect for me, and these pants are fantastically comfortable and flattering. I bought like 20 of them, and have at least 10 brand new ones in my closet ready to replace them when they wear out. Which is good, because they haven’t had them in stock in my size in years.

My worst physical sensory sensitivity is heat. I overheat SO easily, to the point where I will take off all my outer layers outside in Winter before I enter a building. The threshold between feeling okay-but-uncomfortable to too-hot-panic-time is so narrow :') In Summer I will only ever wear shorts. In Winter I can't wear sweaters because they're cumbersome to put on and take off frequently, so I opt for flannels and a denim or waxed canvas jacket. I hope to knit myself a cardigan someday soon :) probably not this Winter, though. Belts have also become my personal bane. My jeans are comfortable enough, but the feeling of a belt holding my pants up becomes so uncomfortable and genuinely exhausting over time that I'm now transitioning into wearing vintage style pants with buttons for suspenders. I can't wait to never wear a belt ever again (if I can help it)!! Turns out Edwardian/Progressive Era men's workwear is loose and incredibly comfortable and ends up reading as sorta dapper to the modern eye, despite being traditional working class clothing. Cool stuff :)

And tons of other clothing options and accessories and shoes and boots and now clothes are an interest of mine and I love dressing up :))) but my sensory issues are still WELL and alive but nobody would know now that I’m in charge of what’s going on my body💀 still have a long list of requirements and still wouldn’t touch jeans w a ten foot pole

I have settled on having multiple of these "Grace" pants in black and have been repurchasing them for years, they aren't perfect (I wish the waist was a smidgen higher and after about a year they get faded) but they are comfortable because the fabric is dense, smooth and stretchy. They look smart and my phone/lanyard fits in the pocket. I can mostly forget about having them on. I also keep a pair in one size up for days my period bloating is bad. I just wear flat Chelsea boots with them and have about ten dark coloured oversized button up shirts. Mostly silk or tencel because I like the drape and they're not hot or too clingy. It's taken me like five years though to get that collection of shirts together. My first few years of having to buy corporate wear was horrible. Essentially I have a uniform now which cuts so much mental load out of my life. Same pants and boots, whatever shirt is closest to hand. A couple of soft knits for winter for when the office is chilly and a huge hooded overcoat for my commute. I've really had to hunt, save and invest in my shirts and knits. I'm still searching for a blazer I don't need to rip off .4 seconds after the fancy meetings are over 😅 www.forevernew.com.au/grace-7-8th-slim-pants-257723?colour=black

top 3 clothing items personally are flared leggings (not tight around my shins so its not constricting but tight around my thighs for comfort plus they make an outfit actually look like an outfit) zip up oversized hoodies so my neck and collarbones area can be exposed (i hate regular t shirt collars) and loose long sleeves, or at least 3/4 sleeve. allowing myself to "diy" clothes helps (cutting collar off, slitting the middle of a hoodie collar). had a discouraging convo with a friend recently, and maybe it wasn't malicious but she told me that I have to step out of my comfort zone with clothing :/ i think ive worn flared leggings for 95% of the year, and the comment threw me off because her brother is audhd as well. i wish i had both the energy and not the sesnory issues because i love looking cute :(

Oversized sweatshirts for the win, and buying the same item multiple times if it’s affordable to do so. I know my style, and I don’t diverge from it. I’m investing in quality pieces I can wear for a long time to come so hopefully, I won’t have to think much at all about outfit planning or what I wear because past me has already done it for future me. (Besides basics like tees, shoes, socks and under wear)

I care so much about all of these details! This video was really helpful to me, especially your thoughts on sizing, because I tend to just buy my size, but then certain items don't fit/feel right and I end up not wearing them. Also, it's sooooo hard to find stuff that serves that need for comfort, while still managing to look cute. Thank you!

I am a neurodivergent adult. This week I was having a conversation with my mother asking if she had any clothing-related sensory issues and if she saw any signs of mine when I was little. Online I found some tips, intended for children but still fairly helpful, although there are some reddit people that have discussed different qualms. I felt a little better, and a little less strange (although I will never stop feeling strange- but that could also be my imposter syndrome. Also please do not think I see anyone as strange for their own way of being) I appreciate your detailed way of speaking and thinking. I always enjoy your videos that I watch, and this was so very helpful right when I'm in the thick of it. Have a good day 😊 Oh P.S. Crew neck collars, even when loose, when they just barely touch the top of my sternum I feel -- I can't explain it. This week I cut all of the collars off most of my sweatshirts. Mom said she used to cut the tags out of my clothes and my MR(it was the dx at the time) sister's because we both were bothered by them. We also think my aversion to anything resting in the middle of my collarbone is why dresses were a nightmare for me when I was little. Starting about high school I gradually wore them again but none had huge, lovingly embroidered-by-mom collars. And also I do not wear necklaces that touch there. Yes- I edited my response multiple times, I apologize

Honestly even in my comfort clothes if I’m not desensitized by going outside and wearing my clothes regularly I will itch/be very uncomfortable if there’s clothes on my legs. Which is why I LOVE the summer for outfits because I can get away with wearing little to no clothes.

I’m an autistic male and have issues when it comes to tighter clothing aswell. I’m so glad a lot of men’s clothes are usually baggy anyways so it’s not something that’s a big inconvenience or anything. I also can’t stand pairs of underwear that do not have legs. I don’t know how women wear the underwear they do.

I'm weird in that for me I'm only happy if I'm wearing a raincoat, and a very specific type, the old-fashioned vinyl/PVC kind without any lining. It's ironic, wearing a raincoat all the time would be hell for most people but for me not wearing a raincoat is hell, but casual clothing most people find cozy and comfortable for me feels like pins and needles. I can't stand sleeves except raincoat sleeves and I can't stand wearing pants or anything pants like (I'm very much a dresses and skirts kind of girl, and to be honest, I kind of wear my raincoat as a dress), and the only footwear I like to wear is boots for some reason. So I have bare thighs in winter (and the top half of my calves as well), my legs get snowed on and people think I'm trying to show off my legs by not covering them. I'm actually just trying to be nice to my legs because they can't stand fabric against them, so I'm the "bare legs in winter" girl and living in Massachusetts, it's not easy.

I never comment but I have to say youre killing it with the video topics! I love how organized they are and how you edit them 😅 we are always the same but opposite in a few ways. Like alot of you guys commenting, I cant stand pants, or leggings. Growing up I loved fashion and being able to express myself through clothes, but due to insecurity and the horror that comes with being *perceived* as a girl I always dimmed myself down and made a conscious effort to try and dress like everyone else (hello masking). Im alot happier now dressing for comfortability and personal choice and style alone.. which means in the fall/winter I wear long skirts, or shorter skirts with tall boots or tights, soft tops and sweaters. Im basically in skirts or dresses all the time if im not wearing athleisure. Athleisure is weird for me though because I dont like the feeling of men staring when I wear leggings in public unless im in the gym, so athleisure for me is mostly sweatpants and skorts, even active dresses. If im wearing leggings its only because its part of a cute feminine work out set and I love the color or pattern. Life gets so much better when you start accomodating your own personal needs. Adulthood sucks in most aspects but the learning to stop giving a sh*t part does not 😂

Would love a follow up on this with business and formal looks! I work in a career where attire and first impressions are important, so I lean towards soft cottons, cashmeres, silks, and rayon, but getting a professional style with comfort is something I have yet to master. Formal parties and weddings already are such a sensory overload, an uncomfortable outfit on top of all that is the absolute worst!! Give me all your recommendations, people!! 😂

Even as a kid, I HATED jeans. I don’t think soft stretch denim existed back then (born in ‘92), at least not for young children, so jeans always felt so scratchy and uncomfortable. So, I could often be found wearing those lightweight, smooth “swishy” sweatpants to school instead. I’d only wear jeans if I absolutely had to. By high school, either jean fabric got more comfortable, or my tolerance for it got better, because I dressed like a skater kid in skinny jeans all the time lol

Yeah neck, back, hip, knees...well all the joints tend to hurt. Ive been diagnosed with ankylosing spondilits and peripheral arthritis and sucks. Basically i had no idea (i tought only elderly people had it) its auto immune. When im worse even my face gets swollen and it annoys me. I dont like tight clothes or rough fabric. I like cotton, soft lycra, satin...and yeah i prefer to size up instead of feeling constricted. I like polyamide for socks and underwear. The thing is so soft. Sorry if its TMI.

I know I'm not who you expected to answer- but I got some hiking sandals from REI that are mostly like tennis shoes but have cut outs. I wear about a women's 8 but they had a girl's size that fit and the girl's version of the woman's shoe enclosed my heel- the women's did not. I don't know if that's a preference for you but my feet overheat in so many shoes but not these. The tops have a drawstring for laces and I find that way faster to put on.

I’m having a hard time finding a decent exercise tank. I like the muscle-tank style but I can’t stand the feel of wearing bras or wearing something with a shelf bra. I keep searching for “high neck muscle tank that can be worn with no bra” but I’m not finding anything !! part of my issue is I hate drawing attention to my chest so I just want to flatten it out without having to wear a binder (especially since most binders are crop-top style which is really uncomfortable for me). Does anyone else have this problem?

I hate light colored clothes for the same reason. They show too many stains and so they are harder to wash. I have a load of whites that I haven't washed in over a year because I am perfectionistic about putting stain remover on them. I get most of my clothes from thrift stores because I am low income so I just have to try a bunch on. With POTS it is exhausting.
