I agree and also feel the same way about underpants! Fortunately, I'm retired, so at home, I just pull on a loose dress, nothing else so nothing constricting anywhere. Maybe that's why I don't go out very much it means “getting dressed” 😂

Who was teased terribly as a teen for not understanding basic fashion? I wanted to wear weird clothes that I liked and I paid a heavy price.

Yes. Used to wear like purple trousers, green and grey striped top and patterned doc martens. I loved it. Didn't understand why people thought it was terrible. Bright happy colours = happy, right?

I remember seeing girls out of school wearing almost THE EXACT SAME THING as each other. I remember the olive green and black and straightened hair. I thought it was so strange and didn't understand it at all. I knew back then that school uniform saved me, because I only got hand me downs and had very little choice in what I had to wear on the weekends. I wonder now what it would have been like without those restrictions.

Problems I have with clothing (that I feel is affected by autism): (1) Sensory Issues, (2) Confusion regarding activity/weather, (3) Social confusion (always feeling over-dressed, under-dressed or cross-dressed), (4) aesthetics confusion (how to pair shapes and colors and what is fashionable or flattering.

Heres my tip for peeps like me who can take forever making clothing choices but like doing outfits: when putting laundry away set up outfits on hangers complete with top/bottom combos, scarves, belts or jewlery so that you can just take them out and put them on in the morning. It makes laundry on a weekend more fun and reduces the spoons used on busy days! (Also fuck ankle socks to heck)

I chose to only wear dresses, because sizing isn't as cumbersome. Also one dress and you are properly put together. I always thought, I have no issue with socks. Now I understand, I am very particular with them.

I don't have any issues with socks in particular, but I do have problems if my socks don't come higher up my ankles than my shoes. I have other general issues regarding fabric sensitivity though, so there are quite a few kinds of socks I won't wear

Ive only just started putting 2 + 2 together about autism, I was misdiagnosed woth bipolar but it never fit and the meds made me worse. When I started wearing very stretchy and relaxed waist maternity jeans during my pregnancy I finally found something other than leggings or no pants that I could handle. I still wear them now 5 months after and don't plan to change. I just make sure to remove the internal labels as labels are an issue for me. I mainly wear black, green and red in specific materials and everything has to either stand alone or be interchangeable or I get overwhelmed. Layers, lots of layers as I'm never the right temperature! Certain sounds really set me off and my baby girl's fingernails scraping on things like fabric as she explores her playmats, toys and pram cause me serious issues. Her high pitched cries can cause me a melt down and even shaking and vomiting. Since she's a refluxer the first few months were constant screaming until we got the right meds. Parenting with sensory issues is extra hard.

I’ve thought I might be autistic for over 7 years now, I’ve just recently scheduled an appointment for assessment. One of the things that encouraged me to try to get an appointment is that I began to look at my mom and her life through an autistic lens. She too was diagnosed as bipolar and never found success with meds. I will broach the subject with her at some point, but she really fits most of the clothing sensory needs (all her pajamas and comfy clothes have the neck holes widened so she doesnt feel them on her neck)

I have a problem where, i like tight clothing because i hate having to 'fix' or adjust clothing, i hate having to pull up my socks or adjust my sweater or feel my shirt untucking? but i also hate wearing tight clothing, yknow, it makes me feel really naked. My solution tends to be having a thin layer of tight clothing underneath a set of looser clothes. that way i feel secure knowing even if i dont fix my clothes the clothes underneath will still sit right, doesn't work during summer though which is a big reason i hate summer. i guess i really just hate showing skin, especially accidentally. i want people to look at me as a person instead of judging me on my body. but that probably also comes with the territory of being a trans guy with *ahem* assets.

The main color of my wardrobe is black, I hate wearing pants of any kind and I’ll only wear them if actually have to. I wear mainly shorts/skirts/dresses with stockings of many kinds and I always wear the same kind of combinations. I do like fashion and subculture , many people tell me I’m stylish but it wasn’t always like this, before the hipster explosion people just called me weird. Something I really dislike is formal clothing and when I worked in an office, I used to wear a lot of pant suits with band/pop culture shirts underneath and dresses with vans shoes, I also dyed my hair pink so I would always have this edgy element on and I could still feel like myself.

I can definitely agree with the bit aboit office clothing. Even if I have a full suit/tux on, I will ALWAYS have some kind of undershirt on so I can tolerate the feeling against my skin. I would rather wear 4 layers and overheat worse than hell itself than deal with the feeling of certain materials against my skin

I love linen in the summer (and as a base layer in the winter). It doesn't keep much heat, and it feels way less sweaty than just about anything else. I can stay covered more (go away, bright burning sunshine!) and not feel nearly so uncomfortable or overheated. It washes up fantastically (just don't put it in the dryer) and gets softer and softer the more it's washed. And I flat-fell my seams on the base layer clothes I make so they're not all flappy and tickly. I've started mending beloved clothing as well. Cheaper and less having to go shopping!

right ! i found a trick for making them feel a lil better ... i turn then each inside out before i throw them in the washer , always wash clothes with cold water bc hot water causes more wear and tear and "pilling" on ur clothes (thats what makes socks so unpleasant) . then , when clothes go to the dryer , you leave them inside out and put at least one and a half dryer sheets in with the cycle . i have found it also works if you carefully use a single or double bladed razor to shave the pilling off before putting in dryer . sry this was so long im very specific on how i do things lol . hope this helps

i physically can't wear jeans, or tight pants in general because it makes me so uncomfortable that i start panicking, so dressing for "events" where i was required to be dressed properly has been a nightmare forever, at some point i just stopped caring about that and got some kind of compromise where i can be comfortable but still look "properly dressed for the occasion".

I loved sewing ever since and so I had the urge of making a lot of clothes. And round about every two years I changed my whole style and jumped into another. Mostly bc I was prefering a historical time or culture or whatever. You know, this kind of "let's try this character bc I don't know who I am" thing ... And I was always super sensitve when something doesn't fit or has the wrong color or material. My wardrobe was always huge and most of them wasn't really worn. Now, as I know I am autistical weird in wearing clothes I will get rid of most of my stash and completely change in good old basics with a touch of quirkiness. This is such a relief!

I hate bras too. They all hurt, even when I go to a much larger size than I need. I just can't stand the elastic, and absolutely refuse to wear a wired bra. I have fibromyalgia affecting my ribs and chest too, so that really doesn't help. Artifical fibres are not my friend. Too hot and sticky. Using cotton crop tops or non-wired bras is better.

I'm with you with the tags but I kinda like scarves sometimes (especially since they can hide my excessive saliva problem, I would always wear a scarf when I took a test in school, they kept me from drooling all over my test). Socks I can take it or leave it. Sequins on a dress are a bit of a pain but I've found I'm just naturally rough on sequins, a sequin dress after wearing it will have lost a lot of sequins, not from me picking at them or anything, just from my natural movements causing them to fall off or something.

I actually find the labels are less tolerable when they've been cut because of the edges! Can't stand ankle socks (and generally I don't wear shoes at all) but my current peeve is clothing with ribbons or ties on the ankle or hem. I can't describe the level of discomfort. I left my sister's house with an over sized shirt and no pants this morning because that was preferable to the spider-leg-hell-grope of the new leggings I had.

My pet peeve is socks with tight tops. The last I bought were so tight when new, that I scissored the elastic threads, then the inner side of the band, until they loosened enough I could tolerate wearing them. They look horrid and I will end up replacing them sooner than if they fit right in the first place. As for bras, I used not to wear them unless I had plans to go out. I had to start wearing them daily when I started being in shared housing. I still find it less comfortable, sometimes I get rubbed sore areas.

I’m Slavic autistic and at least for my family dressing up has became almost like an evolutionary trait, we all are quite stylish and put something nice on almost every time. It’s a very cultural thing also. I really struggle with anything revealing, heels of any sort, but overall makeup, clothes, accessories…it’s masking but it’s also a craft that my bloodline perfected over generations. I take pride in it.

I started wearing only white clothes because it’s the most easy way to combat all wardrobe difficulties I have had. This way I can always wear pijamad style comfy clothes. And then I also never have to battle against color combination. And also it’s easy to then go shopping cuz there’s only a few white items in a store and there will most always be a comfortable item that’s soft. But not it’s kinda turned into an ocd. It’s been going 2 years now. And now I just have everything white. Even my underwear. Idk. I get frustrated if I somehow desire to wear blue. Maybe I’ll switch to the color blue but I am just obsessed and so fixed upon white now. Idk. It frustrates me a lot haha is strange because it’s very stressful. 😂but at the same time waaaaaaaaay less stressful than having to combine colors and deal with allll those extra choices in stores etc.

I can relate to much of this..especially the bra part...Sometimes I can feel the weight of the fabric of clothes on my skin...it feels warm and cool at the same time, heavy and cumbersome and like I want to tear my skin off along with my clothes...it’s only at certain times that I feel this way....I’ve learned just to deal with it, like I said it’s only sometimes (when I’m overwhelmed, emotionally or by the heat)(of course I can’t stand being cold either) so what option do I have but to just deal with it...as I’ve aged I’ve taught myself not to acknowledge it...but like I said when I’m overwhelmed it’s like walking around on fire.... I’ve never told anyone. As a child I couldn’t express it, I’d just freak out and then my mother would freak out. as an adult (not diagnosed with autism) I know to well the reaction from (some...most) people is some form of rejection (being treated as if crazy) or belittling of my experience (disbelief or dismissal)...even doctors 🥼...😕....so I just keep it to myself ..seems safer I wish I had the means to get an evaluation...I’m not sure what it would change and honestly at 39 I feel ridiculous ...but maybe it would answer a lot of my questions about myself and my life, help me to understand why I never, and still don’t, fit....maybe I’m just crazy and want an excuse for being the way I am ...broken, burned out, lost and alone.... But I am the way i am..no matter what, labels or not...and I just don’t fit ...and neither do my clothes...

Jeans are a no go for me unless they’re loose and even then I take them off as soon as I can. Short sleeve shirts make me very anxious and I sometimes even feel nauseous when I have short sleeved shirts on. It’s weird to me but whatever. So I either wear a short sleeve shirt with a jacket or cardigan or I wear long sleeves. But I hardly ever just have a short sleeved shirt on. I can’t stand tennis shoes most of the time because they put too much pressure on the top of my foot and I feel like my feet are on fire when I wear them longer than 2-3 hours. I don’t like leggings unless they’re loose or baggy (which never looks good for the butt) What I’ve started doing is buying more greys, whites, and blacks. This makes deciding what to wear so much more simple for me. My favorite color is blue so I do also have a ton of blue in my wardrobe as well. I also agree with the other comments about sports clothes being the most comfy for me. I have three of the same pairs of black joggers from old navy and they’re a life saver for me. It just makes life so much easier when you’re wearing clothes that make you feel good or at least that don’t make you feel overstimulated and annoyed all day. I’ve always wished I didn’t need clothes ever since I was younger 😂 my mom tells me that I would take off my clothes in public all the time when I was like 2-4 years old.

Is it just me or do clothing manufacturers now use softer material on labels? I used to religiously cut/rip labels off everything, but more lately I haven't found the need. Concur on anything tight around the waist, I have many pairs of jeans which I do not wear more than once.

I can’t stand clothes that cling to my body, like tight shirts. Loose fitting yet fairly soft clothing is key for me! I’ve recently started allowing myself to not wear clothes at home unless I want to, since I live completely by myself. It does make me feel more comfortable in a lot of ways, yet I’d be too anxious if I did that if I lived with my parents for instance. I wish there were more childish pjs, like the kid pj sets from the white company and such, in adult sizes. Seems more comfortable and calming than the typical pjs.

Just in the last few years I've found that athletic clothing is the best for me.... Now, a lot of it is very soft, flowy material, which I prefer. I live in sweats, jersey shorts, and t-shirts. I can tolerate yoga pants, but not often. I hate jeans. I stopped wearing a bra a few years ago. I found a brand of athletic socks that are comfy every time I put them on. I'd like to become (mentally) comfortable wearing dresses just for simplicity's sake.

Interestingly the problem I find with socks is not the seams but when they bunch around my ankles! 🤮 I prefer knee length ones for this reason - they tend to stay up better I find! Bamboo socks feel lovely and soft but they seem to slip off my feet! So annoying! I always switch to sandals as soon as seasonally appropriate

I can't abide uncomfortable clothing, I will break out in hives with stress and be utterly miserable even if I do avoid a meltdown, I never wear a bra at home and loath leaving the house as I need to put one on. I've had ex's give me a lot of stick about my PJs and need to pull them on before I even unpack the groceries, clothes hurt, irritate and I feel strangled in them. My ex's also got very irate at me putting vests and baby gros on inside out. Well if annoys me, there is a chance they will annoy my babies to. and they couldn't tell me then. I never suffered for fashion, the very idea is torture.

I feel like I'm blessed because some of my clothing choices end up being sort of stylish. But I wear the same outfit for a long time (only wash it once a week to once every two weeks) so I only need 2-3 of a particular clothing item. I typically wear the same outfit all season and I noticed my outfits have changed as I grow older. I avoid pants for the most part because they're not comfortable, although some types of yoga pants/leggings are okay for the coldest of the cold parts of winter. When I was a kid I loved shiny jackets, I was the kid who begged her parents to let her wear her raincoat. But when I was 14 on the 4th of July, I kept my raincoat on all evening but I got sick and threw up, I spent the evening doubled over from nausea, missing the fireworks. After that evening I decided I didn't like raincoats anymore and only wore it when it rained. When I was in my teens and early 20's I had to wear a sweatshirt halfway on and it had to be a gray sweatshirt. I always put my arms through the sleeves, pulled the brim up to my shoulders but REFUSED to pull it over my head. Even in the summer, I'd wear tank top, short skirt, and halfway on gray sweatshirt. Fall, winter, and spring I always wear long skirts, preferably heavy wool skirts. In my mid-20's my summer outfit style became mini-dresses (I had 3 mini-dresses I kept wearing all summer). Nowadays my summer outfit is a white blazer and red leather skirt. My fall, winter, and spring outfits over the past year has been a turquoise peacoat but I wear it as a blazer over a tank top or some other kind of shirt, but because the peacoat is like a blazer to me, when it's too cold for just it, I wear a winter coat over it. I wear the peacoat with a red leather skirt when it's mild to cool weather but when it's chilly or cold I wear a long heavy wool skirt. Also I wear sunglasses all the time (light sensitivity issues) and so I pair the peacoat with tortoiseshell sunglasses as opposed to my regular thick black frame sunglasses. In fact, the turquoise peacoat, black tank top, and red leather skirt outfit is what I'm wearing now. Whenever I like an outfit it's all I want to wear until the weather's completely wrong for it. Only time I wear something different is when it's required, like when I was a bridesmaid to my sister's wedding back in 2013. I felt kinda reluctant until I put on the dress and felt like a princess. But I wasn't allowed to make that dress into my new outfit, at first I didn't understand why, but now I do, it's a special dress everyone wanted to keep nice.

The only time I find zippers are really useful in pants, is if they're zip-off pants, then if you find you're too warm, or it gets warmer outside, you can have shorts. But I don't wear those as much anymore since the zippers feel weird to sit on, but they got me through spring and fall in high school where the mornings were cold, but would get really warm before school ended.

My favourite jean type trousers are the Lift and Shape range from Next. The fabric is really soft and stretchy and the waistband doesn't dig in and smooth out all the "I'm over 30 and love cake" lumps and bumps. My first pair I bought in a sale and they lasted me about five years so I was happy to pay the full price for a replacement pair. PS Sorry for my possibly excessive comments on your channel right now - I've been busy and am doing a binge-watch catch-up.

This is why I'm so glad I know how to sew. Finding something that fits, looks good, and is comfortable, is confusing. I tend to look for things that will go with multiple things. And yeah, bamboo is amazing! I can't stand my toes being sweaty and touching, so bamboo and cotton blend toe socks (from Lee Valley) are my favourite! I agree with finding similar things that work. Like for me, that's raglan shirts (my shoulders are too wide for most shoulder seams), graphic tees/tanks, plaid shirts, and hoodies for tops, then corduroy pants (I got a couple from Costco in grey and black since they're so comfy), pants made of knit materials for the stretch, and baggy pants made of thin cotton. If you struggle with temperature, cotton parachute pants are so comfy, and I keep making them for myself since they cover my legs (stopped shaving due to sensory reasons) and keep me from getting sunburnt, but also allow the wind to blow through them. Just fair warning, if they're a light colour, they can be see-through. I have ones that I made last summer that are white with pink and blue tie-dye, and I have to make sure not to wear dark underwear with it. Also, tip I learned this summer, if you want to go to the beach, but hate getting sand in all the wrong places, look for a bathing suit that looks like leggings if they exist. I made one by tracing leggings and an old tankini top onto swimsuit fabric, then sewing it together, and adding zippers in the legs because I have a condition where I need compression stockings (which I buy open toe, or as toe socks due to the toe thing). I didn't get any sand up my legs, other than a bit around the ankles, plus, in the lake, I didn't worry as much about leeches with my legs covered. Much better, but yeah, I had to make that myself.

I really found this video informative, it helped me to understand what my eleven year old daughter is experiencing with textures. She has only one pajama she wears , she is always in the same clothes. She will not wear a pair of leggings, the list is so long. Purple is also her favorite color, I see her also wearing a lot of gray.Thank you I can now plan a wardrobe for her which she will actually want to wear.

I can agree, i get verry irritated when my waist is constructed. Unfortunatley that has lead to many imprompu moonings. Im not on the spectrum but have some of the same symptoms. Socks on the other hand just need to not bunch up in the toe area. I couldnt care less what socks i wear. Most of my shirts, pants, etc were very loose i was told I looked homeless. I just wanted to be comfortable and didn't/still dont understand the need to get all dressed up for a general day.

Wow so my son is 18 and his only problem is upper body area? so like his shirts cannot have a collar with buttons. If the shirt was very coarse and heavy, he doesn’t like it he doesn’t like the feel of any shirt touching his skin. He wears very light, very soft shirts, mostly short sleeve, even in the dead of winter he can wear a sweater over his shirt, but it Hass to be unzipped. It doesn’t bother his arms. It’s only his chest area, maybe the abdomen area too but just mostly his chest area and socks are not a problem for him I only remember him saying he didn’t like a specific sock just because of the way it felt because it had a very big seam on the toes other than that he is the most perfect kid doing well in school in college it’s extremely healthy exercises. He is really a great person but he’s so sad for this one issue and we are trying so hard to find what the cause is. My son is not autistic and does not have any issues. He has never met another person that has this issue and therefore it’s driving him crazy it’s all allowing him to Google so much so that, the results are scary. He comes up with things such as the MS hug and talks about it so much that he makes me start worrying. Can you please tell me what are your symptoms exactly and when did you start having them my son started having the chest issues symptoms really after he had anxiety but he tells me that he has been having the chest issue from since he was a little boy seatbelts bothered him, so I’m starting to believe this is a Century issue that has gotten worse after anxiety. His anxiety is totally controlled. He has received cognitive behavioral therapy and he’s doing great so this chest issue is leaving us dumbfounded and lost. We really need to hear from other people and you sound very similar to my son please if you can give me a little more detail on your symptoms when they started and what you were doing to control it.

I would consult another specialist. I'm sorry that I'm not a specialist myself, because I'd be comfortable diagnosing him myself if I was. If he can find healthy coping mechanisms, to alleviate some of the sensory issues, that'd be best. It sounds like your son is a wonderful person, and I wish nothing but success.

I'm stocking up on those. I've started wearing my socks inside out, seamless would be nice, but I'd settle for ones that don't shrink in the drier!! I don'T like trousers, they're uncomfortable around the waist and crotch and I don't like when they sit tight at the knees. because of that I were dresses and skirts, but then there is the problem is that tights are not made for women who're more on the taller side, so most of my tights are dangerously close to slipping over my butt. XD I dunno one day I find a perfect solution for wearing dresses in winter. I also have a complicated relationship with woolen jumpers..they are itchy but I LOVE the smell of Lanolin and wool is warm but airy over summer dresses in winter...synthetic jumpers just don't work as well. I really don't like socks or anything on my feet and if I can get away with it I don't wear them, but right now, in winter, I do it when I leave the house... I really hate being cold. I don't think I have an issue chosing the right outfit for the day, though I am pretty sure I don't fit in perfectly...I don't mind that though. I generally like almost all of my clothes and since I usually wear quite colourful clothes, I could theoretically wear them in every random combination. I like bright red, so that I wear a lot ...and if you wear 4+ different red tones together it is a concept and artsy, right? ;) muted colours I don't like that much. I want high saturation. As a child I had a phase were everything I wore had to be purple. if there was no purple on it I didn't want it. my grandma was smart and just put purple shoelaces in my shoes so I would wear them. I was really lucky that my parents thought it was cool that I had "my own style" , they didn'T punish me for being fussy about clothing as long as I was clothed enough to go out with them, :)

I wear the same outfit all the time. It's a very weird outfit most would find uncomfortable, and technically speaking, it is for me too, but I only feel "right" when I'm wearing it. My outfit is a tank top, miniskirt, mid-calf boots, and a green raincoat zipped up all the way (usually the hood is up, too). I even wear this outfit to bed. My legs get cold in the winter (I live in Massachusetts) and a raincoat holds in a lot of heat, but I really want to wear it. I don't know why I need to wear a raincoat all the time, but I just hate not wearing one. Ironically, I don't like getting it wet so I try to have an umbrella when it's raining so I don't get my outfit wet. I like rainy days because those are the only times I don't get weird looks for wearing a raincoat (although I do for leaving it on).

If I could just figure out how to get away with not wearing a bra when I go out in public in the summer, I'd be content. In the winter it's no problem because I wear hoodies all the time. But in the summer, I get super self-conscious about whether or not you can see anything through my shirt, especially after having a baby. I think wearing pasties would be worse than wearing a bra. What does everyone do to get around this?

Every summer time I need to get used to this again, but I had a female role model, who was so confident about not wearing a bra, that I try to remember her confidence, copy it and just try to ignore the possibility of something showing, and it works, my brain gets used to it after a few weeks into it. I still prefer shirts/ tops that are loose or patterned/textured in a way that hides the exact body shape.

So I dress a bit strange because I absolutely can’t stand pants or bras, but I wear usually dresses that are baggy in the chest area and tight in the waist or a blouse with lots of wiggle room with a waist high skirt. ( gives doves breast look) I have found when you accentuate other parts of your body, it distracts from your chest. Doing hair/ makeup (even though I hate makeup) really pulls all of it together too and no one seems to notice. I really love the Victorian era look and I have been able to get away without wearing a bra or pants with that look! Hope this helps 💕

I remember lots of times, I had to take my shoe off because the seam from the sock was pressing into the side of my foot and I could feel it every time I took a step. I also didn't like how tight the socks would be on my leg. I'd pull them halfway up my leg and then fold it down. Now I have ankle socks that don't have big seams on the inside. Sometimes I have trouble choosing what to wear. However since I pretty much only wear jeans when I go out, any of my shirts work. Not sure if any one else does this, but if I find a shirt I like, I will buy more than one of that shirt. That way I can wear it more often. I also don't care if I'm stylish or not. I like to just get shirts that look pretty. I don't mind the cold too much, except when my asthma starts making it hard to catch my breath in the cold. Now heat is something I despise. Heat will make me feel sick. I would rather have to snuggle under my sheets than try to put fans on full blast aimed at me so I don't get sick. It doesn't help that I live in a desert. I love jeans without zippers and buttons. I've used them for years. Though it is hard for me to find my waist size in the petite range. I don't like having the edge of my pants dragging across the floor. I want my jeans to fit not only around the waist but down to my ankle. Sorry for the rambling post, but I kept wanting to respond to things you said.
