In this gripping documentary, we explore the sensational claims of Captain George Drevar, a sailor who supposedly encountered a gigantic sea serpent in 1875 while aboard his ship the Pauline, some 20 miles from Cape São Roque, Brazil. Remembered as a classic case of maritime cryptozoology, Drevar's legendary monster sighting impacted 19th century society to such an extent that he was forced to defend himself, and his claims, in court. He asserted he'd seen the Leviathan of myth... others asserted he was a madman. Today we explore the details of this fantastical paranormal case and consider what the enigmatic creature Drevar encountered might have been.

I have a much lower degree of skepticism when it comes to stories involving the oceans than I would for those in other environments. Mostly because our knowledge of the oceans is so limited, but also because the men (and now women) who make their livings out there become experts on the environment, and are especially attuned to anything anomalous, since any weirdness on the water can be dangerous. And if you speak to anyone who has spent their life sailing, they always have at least one story about something they didn't understand and couldn't explain. Whether it's creatures or craft or lights or sounds--professional sea-goers invariably have experienced some strangeness. So a giant, whale-killing sea serpent doesn't sound all that improbable to me. After all, giant squid were entirely mythological until some large squid beaks were documented in the 19th century, and it wasnt until the 21st century that we actually captured photos of a live one.

I was very excited when I received the notification for this video! Interesting, as usual... thank you! I was, however, a little perplexed that you didn't at least mention the fact that Giant/Colossal Squid is a now well-known favorite meal of Sperm Whales and surely could account for at least some of these sea serpent anecdotes told by extremely experienced sailors. It would make sense that witnessing a large whale battling to subdue, kill, and then eat a similarly large squid would be difficult for any onlookers (now or then) to decipher who was the prey and who was the predator. We've only proven these gargantuan squid's existence in the 21st century, and still, we have extremely little knowledge of how large they can get or if the largest among them are capable of predating on large sperm whales. So it seems to reason their 2 long tentacles and 8 arms could be seen as one entity. Making it difficult to differentiate if they are viewing one very long creature wrapped many times or many appendages attached to a single creature that is attempting to defend itself; or possibly even being the aggressor. Either way, it's very intriguing to ponder! What a curiously beautiful world we live in 🦑 🐋 💙

The Serpent emerges frequently in Norse mythology. Jörmungandr was a Sea Serpent so big that it circled the world and would be misidentified by sailors as a landmass. Tales have been told of Saint Olaf in 1028 AD slaying a Sea Serpent in Valldal, Norway. The sightings and tales throughout history have tended to occur off the coast of Norway and Greenland.🤷🐍

There actually exists a fascinating and extensive history of large serpentine sea creature sightings, many stemming from the Nordic regions of the ocean circa the beginning of the 20th century. Though throughout maritime history these sightings span across centuries all over the globe, as often seen in ancient/old oceanic charts and maps.

While I do agree with the trailing debris. Another for the potential explanation for a serpent being wrapped around the whale, it is possible for it also being a large Cephalopod like a Giant squid or giant pacific octopus latched on to the giant predator. The report of the Whale jumping out of the water with the “monster” still attached could be the whale taking the large cephalopod for the ride of its life trying to shake it off.

the story of the serpent swimming up to the ship as if mistaking it for a potential mate because of the boats size and paint pattern feels like such a distinctly real and believable animal behavior. that part of the account was so compelling, so familiar. it sounds so much like any other wild animal with its instinctual behaviors and ecological niche. i'm sure the stories of sea serpents attacking ships and wrapping its tentacles around it stems from the animal mistaking the vessel for a sperm whale. exactly like how surfers are often attacked by sharks that mistake them for seals. in some cases the serpent might even give up once realizing the thing is made of wood but by then the ship is damaged enough to sink, in other cases survived to tell the tale. it all checks out well with other human encounters with sea life. I don't really doubt the captain at all!

In the Jules Verne classic "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", Captain Nemo's magnificent submarine the "Nautalis" was originally confused as a enormous cryptic sea monster. Although this great novel was a work of science fiction, and has nothing to do with the paranormal, could you somehow make reference to this in one of your future sea monster episodes? Many, many scholars have read this phenomenal work of great literature (as should you), and reflects the common mariner mindset of the late 18oo's. (I love your stories, and especially the way that you tell them!)

Well, everyone at some point thinks there is a Loch Ness Monster until proof of otherwise is proven because if sea serpents of this size existed past the prehistoric age, don't you think alot of ships of the day would be sunken with their crew a declassee of said monster's diet?

The world is more than we can comprehend. What I find interesting about this story relates to a video that was captured and posted here on KZbin and has been shown on numerous paranormal channels. A couple down in Florida were just enjoying the day floating along in their boat when they saw something in the water that they described as looking "like a telephone pole". The "thing" was black and white or so it appeared in the video and it was believed to be attacking manatees in the area by coiling around them. The couple captured one attack where the "thing" appeared to wrap itself around one manatee. The couple did not know what it was but immediately opted to get out of the area. I wonder if this might be related to this story? Here is the link to that video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZvTZJp5g956q9k

We must all realise, in the years of sailing ships, ships moved about in silence. Only the movement of the actual crew was the sound produced by these ships. Today, ships have enormous diesel engines, sonar, radar, air conditioning, heaters, generators, electic pumps, freezers, and much more. The good captain mentioned that the sea serpent seem to have a reasoning of sorts. If this is true, the creature would definitely avoid all that horrible noise coming from modern ships. Almost the entirety of the ocean is unexplored. What can be here? (By the way, is Paralaura more beautiful than usual? It seems that way to me.)

Bear in mind that up until fairly recently, giant and colossal squid were considered the stuff of make-believe, fevered tales told by drunken sailors driven half mad by weeks or months at sea. And yet, we now know they do indeed exist. Who knows what else lives in those briny depths where not even our most advanced cameras and vehicles can go? What wonders and horrors lay beneath the waves we so foolishly believe we have mastery over? A part of me wants to know, but another prays I never will.

The HEUVELMANS system is a system of categorising sea serpent sightings. It was developed by Bernard Heuvelmans in 1967. After examining 587 sightings from 1639 to 1966, Heuvelmans concluded that there were at least nine major types of unknown animals involved. These nine Heuvelmans types are: 1. the long-necked (long necked seal, long necked sea serpent, great sea horse, water horse, plesiosaur, plesioturtle, pinniped) - cosmopolitan 2. merhorse (water horse, great sea horse, maner, probably long necked seal) - atlantic & pacific oceans 3. many-humped (many coiled, classic sea serpent, many humped sea serpent, probably cetacean) - north atlantic ocean 4. many-finned (great sea centipede, segmented sea serpent, multi finned sea serpent, multi limbed sea serpent, probably cetacean centipede) - tropical & subtropical waters 5. super-otter (long necked and long tailed giant otter, probably primordial cetacean) - norwegian & barents sea 6. super-eel (classic sea serpent, eel like sea serpent, sail finned sea serpent, mega eel, titanoconger, frilled shark, oarfish) - cosmopolitan 7. marine saurian (giant marine crocodylomorphs, whale eater, pliosaur, mosasaur, protocetid) - tropical & subtropical waters 8. father of all the turtles (carapaced sea serpent, giant turtles) - atlantic ocean & caribbean sea 9. yellow belly (mega eel, possibly shark or amphibian, resembles an enormous yellow tadpole 60 to 100 ft long) - pacific & indian oceans

The universe is not quite as linear as we think it is. Case in point, about 20 years ago I had a friend over on a windy October day. That friend was a mathematician and prided himself in being a purely rational being. So we're having supper and I get the strong urge to taunt him and tell him my house was haunted (it was). He had a knee-jerk reaction and said "There's no such thing as ghosts!". He wasn't finished saying "ghosts" when the seat on the toilet bowl (on the second floor) came crashing down loudly. The timing was PERFECT. My friend not only turned completely white but he quickly ate his pizza and drove away ;)

Very good on all aspects like articulation, punctuation, pace, but to me the music and backround audio in general, is quite loud. I don't mind it's there, but I think its too loud and distracting.

There is a video off of Florida 2013 that seems to show a giant serpent body attacking a manatee.

Interesting that the young men in florida that were also attacked by a sea serpent not long ago which only left one survivor could be a similar creature.

I don't doubt it. The Ocean is too vast, and unexplored.

I don't know I've seen things out in the Atlantic on the trawlers but it's only the water playing tricks on your eyes. One night all the stars where out and reflecting off the sea and it was a very calm night and I could swear that I saw a red Massey Ferguson tractor floating in the water 😅

This is very much possibly an animal from the deep sea because we have scarcely scratched the surface, and besides, much stranger things have happened...

No disrespect but the music is overpowering at that volume, it’s not background music.

I like how people speculate about people's recounts, especially when people hundreds to thousands of years ago, were more developed in drawing and illustrating than anyone who exists today, take a look at images drawn, sculpted and inscription 16 000 years ago, you think those people spent all that time, making those things, out of imagination without any Infleuence?

So what do you know of the Pensacola Florida case from 1962? This even has Loch Ness beat. McCleary went to his grave swearing it’s true!

What kinda sea monster could fit into a glass specimen jar? Lol. I’d kill to see what creature was in the jar that he showed to the Judge/Cop/Prosecution. A sea snake? That would explain the “striped” one he caught as well.

I have a hard time hearing anything from our beautiful narrator, because there is some very irritating background noise incessantly pounding on an old piano.

A gigantic electric eel? Maybe. They seem to look like they are tightening loops around their prey. This would make the whale and it's nearby friends to "wail in agony" with electric shocks in the water....... Just a thought.
