Fun fact: When Czechoslovakia started to implement reforms in their socialist system to make it more open and democratic, the Soviet Union sent in literal tanks to crush their movement. This caused a divide between leftists worldwide with those blindly loyal to the Soviets being labelled as "tankies". So yeah, Czechoslovakia was forced. So forced in fact that it caused a political divide that still exists today.

The French defeats in 1870 and 1940 was mainly due to Germans seizing the great hidden onion reserves in northeastern France. They are the source of the French army's power. They'd been moved further south after 1871, which was why the French won WW1, but out of overconfidence, they were reinstalled near the border after 1918. Franco-German wars have essentially relied on preserving or capturing this great resource.

To describe the Michigan-Ohio rivalry, according to the documents on Michigan's borders Toledo, which had been administered under Ohio, would be part of Michigan. Ohio refused to back down and some minor fighting occurred. It was resolved when Michigan was given the upper peninsula in exchange for Ohio keeping Toledo, thus allowing Ohio and Michigan to become states. While we seem to hate each other more than the Greeks and Turks, when push comes to shove, we will fight together harder than is humanly possible. Plus Ohio has the only US tank factory and Michigan has the main aircraft production facility for the army, so we could theoretically have the most mechanized army if a massive Civil War 2: Electric Boogaloo starts.
