If you play the regular song it doesn't have the movie clips. I Know it's hard but the songs words are tell the story... The song and movie clips are from the 1971 movie "Johnny got his gun". All the words are the "soldier in the hospitals thoughts". He was severely injured in the war. He lost his sight, hearing, speech, arms and legs. He has no way to tell the doctors to let him die... He is finally able to communicate with Morris Code..Here is something great to React to. I promise you will like it.. Davina Michelle's cover of the Adele song "Someone like you" or another title you like on her KZbin channel. Best voice that I have ever heard... She posts a cover every week. All her covers are as good or better than the original.. Really incredible...

Don’t bother doing a reaction video if you don’t have the time or you are too tired to understand the music, and understand the lyrics. Often in Metal songs the lyrics tell a story. The song is based on the movie that is playing during the video. The song are the thoughts of the man who was blown up in the movie. He cant speak, hear, see he is ONE... and wants to die. There's another music video for this song that doesn't have clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" playing in the background. They only used clips from it because the vocalist had an idea about a guy in the army who loses his arms, legs, sight, speech and hearing and is just a shell and someone pointed out that a book with that plot already existed.

The "radio" you are referring are actually scenes taken from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The song is also based on this book. In the book, Johnny, having learned to communicate with his nurse through a system of Morse code, manages to communicate his desire to be taken to Washington D.C. and there presented to the people in order to show them the true horror of war. But the generals and the politicians refuse Johnny's request, because they want the war to continue. The book ends with the generals leaving Johnny in a dark room alone with his nurse to die, his request forever denied.

Yo, a “Yank” from The States over here. Ya have to understand this song is an homage to a book by Dalton Trumbull, enticed “Johnny Got His Gun.” WWI, American gets blown up a land mine. Loses sight, speech, legs... etc. he can hear what everyone’s saying, but can only communicate using Morse Code with his eyes. The over-the-top instrumentals represent the sounds of actual WAR, adrenaline rush to kill or be killed and confusion. It’s also a metaphor of his conscience and indecisive thoughts. To make a bit more sense, the guitar riffs were meant to sound like machine guns. This may account for the overload you didn’t care for. The film clips were taken from a film of the same story. I suggest giving it another listen armed with this information. P.S. I go to Ireland every year and have somewhat of a love affair with it. Speakin’ of love... love me some Magic Mak. We dig that badass ova here...

I was instantly hooked, but it took 2 more years to circle back to them. You really should start at the beginning with Kill em All and work your way forward track by track (possibly an album review). That is truly the only way to understand and appreciate their unique and signature sound. Still killing it after 35 years!

Here's the thing, there are so many great stories being told in metal songs. My recommendation would be to do a little research on the song before you listen to it just so you get the overall concept of what the band is trying to accomplish. For instance, this song was inspired by a book. And in that book, this soldier gets completely destroyed by a landmine. And the whole song is really James speaking for that soldier since he literally can't speak. He lost both of his arms, both of his arms. He lost most of his face. He can't speak. So, the lyrics are written from his perspective. Metal songs often address war or philosophy or relationships or religion, and I just think it helps to have that little nugget of information in your head before you hear the song so that you're not playing a guessing game, and maybe that helps you connect with the song more.

In my personal opinion, even if the song was based on the book and movie (the clips in this video), they never should've added movie clips to the video, because it distracts from the song rather than adding to it. The poor movie audio is difficult to hear and it ruins the song in the process. At any rate, read up on the song to get the gist, it only takes 30 seconds. Then you'll understand.

The way to fix your concern is to listen to the song without the video, just the song itself in my opinion. It’s super easy to get distracted and miss the amazing music and lyrics. 🙂 The reason for the slow start and then the build up to fast and furious, is because it’s trying to mimic the wounded soldiers feelings. Starts with sadness, confusion, quiet and ultimately turns into furious fucking anger and fear. The very fast drum beats, listening closely, is supposed to mimic machine gun fire. I’m a hard rock/metal fanatic, I hope my comments are not offensive. I can suggest some other Epic Metallica songs with blistering music and intense lyrics. Love your channel. 🤘🏼❤️🇺🇸🥳🍻

Oh and this song is much better without the video imo especially for a first listen, as I’m sure you’ve heard by now.

Please react to Zakk Wylde - Black Label Society - In This River - Live In Paris (2006). Zakk is considered one of the greatest guitarists in the world today. Thanks.

I definitely agree that this video isn't super great. The overlaying of the movie scenes and dialogue over the song made for a nice effect but it wasn't done well enough for it to not distract from the music itself. The album and live versions of the song don't have the low-fi movie audio in them. I feel almost as if they could have made this version of the song separately from the original, and toned down the intensity of the music itself to bring the focus toward the video scenes, dialogue, and various concepts they seemed to want to highlight. A few other bands don't have a problem with making slight changes to their music based on what they're using it for. But this was also from 1989, when Metallica were in their mid twenties and the modern metal scene was still forming. I can't bring myself to call this video a "masterpiece" like some other commenters. The song itself is definitely a good one in a vacuum, but the video is... well. It's more a music video for Johnny Got His Gun than a standalone thing.

Sometimes its better to do the video that only has lyrics, or live version because the official video can distract from the music, if your not sure announce what song you decide to do a day or 2 early and the fans will definitely let you know.

So, i understand that for non musical or non metal listeners it might be tough to figure out metallica. The thing is that metal music is really not a rhythm type of music. That is because there is no consistent rhythm throughout the song, its played with different rhythms through out the song. So you may hear a consistent rhythm for 30 seconds and then the rhythm changes. That is how more complex songs are structured. Most pop music has a rhythm generally throughout the song which is easier to create , play and listen to. With metal you often have to listen to songs multiple times to catch the newer sounds n complex song structure. Its just a matter of your brain being unable to understand where the song is going. The more you listen the more your brain kinda understands.

@Drew Fortune, search this on youtube, Metallica - One [Jammin' Version] [Official Music Video]. It's the One video without the movie parts, just Metallica Jammin', cause you kept saying you didn't like the movie interruption. I also think this video has a little shorter intro and ending, due to it was shortened for radio play back in the late '80s.

i'm sure someone has posted this already, so just re-enforcing, the background music isnt in the real song! In fact, loved that you watched fade to black with lyrics instead of a video. Watch this with lyrics, its an all time legendary ballad!
