In part 24 of the 2 month camping trip, I'm fishing a stream with a road that runs close to it making for somewhat easy access but that didn't slow the fishing down...big fish live in this small stream and they are crazy pretty! Near the end of the day I find a hole that was loaded with fish. Back at camp I ran into some locals who asked how the fishing was...I told them about my day on this stream and they were STUNNED. They COULD NOT BELIEVE I caught any quality trout from this stream. All they had ever caught were kokanee and 8 inch trout...this some statement has been made several other times as others recognize the stream from the video and private message me!
I was completely shocked my the landscape I found in Idaho, I felt like I was camping and fly fishing in a rainforest. The only thing prettier than the landscape were the native westslope cutthroat...the one near the end was stunning! But the craziest thing was watching ash fall from the sky at the end of the day. A video for the flies and rig is linked below.
I'm living in my truck bed camper for 2 months and road tripping through New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. See the entire series on my channel or other parts below....

Been seeing lots of beautiful cutties on your channel. I'm on the East coast and get up in the hills to chase brookies. Lots of fish, but that's not entirely why I'm there. Saw a deer give birth to twins while I was eating lunch. I guess she realized that it was now or never. I just chilled and went about my business, quietly. She did her thing while I watched. She got her kids hidden and went off to eat, or so I figured. I finished lunch, and backed out quietly. If I live to be a thousand, it will be among the top memories of my existence. This is why we do what we do.

Speaking of people driving right past some good fishing ... My Mom was pregnant with me when her and my Father built the Family Home where I now live. The Army Corps of Engineers had dug big drainage ditches which drained what had been; in my Grandfather's day, known as "Buck Trout Swamp". I kid you not ! I was born in 1956, and; growing up, I felt as if I grew up "out in the Country". I spent a great deal of my childhood "out in the woods". I spent most of my working life travelling up and down the East Coast following the money. Every time I came "Home" ... things had changed. My neighborhood is still bordered on one side by the same 4-lane divided Highway that it has always been, and the creek which the swamp was drained into is still there, surrounded by a narrow stretch of woods. But the other 2 sides had been Greenbrier Farms, the "World's Largest Nursery". They leased out HUGE fields to Stokely / Van Camps where they grew corn and soybeans, and one year potatoes. Damned near the entire neighborhood was in the potato fields that year after the harvesting machines had harvested potatoes ... and left a ridiculous amount of potatoes behind. They had also left stacks of burlap bags, which we all gratefully filled with potatoes and took home! But Greenbrier Farms was sold, roads and houses were built, and my neighborhood became increasingly swallowed up by suburbia. As a child we had driven down a dirt road to access one of my favorite lakes to fish in, but the dirt road was gone, and it was surrounded by private property and inaccessible for most of my adult life. After my prime earning years I quit chasing the money and moved back home for good. One day I took the time to drive completely around the old fishing hole from my childhood, which is now completely surrounded by business properties. The road we used to travel to access the dirt road offered no hope, with businesses of a type where I didn't even drive onto their property. Two sides of the lake were surrounded by a big privacy fence behind Auto Shops and a Shopping Center. There WAS a hole in the fence at one spot that led to a tiny area of shoreline, but it wasn't what I was looking for. The 4th side has maybe 20 feet of trees and brush which hide the lake from sight, but I knew it was there, and accessible from the back corner of the largest Parking Lot at a Wa-Wa I have ever seen. Truckers use it to park and rest as it is right next to I-64. It's also reserve parking for a small Auto Dealership. It fit my needs as public parking well enough, and their was a path through the trees down a hill to the lake, where almost nobody fishes any more, and most people don't even know it's there! Over the past several years I have dragged my little aluminum jon-boat down the hill to the lake, where I have caught 2 largemouth bass over 5 lbs. and one over 6 lbs.. All in a lake hidden in the middle of what is now sprawling suburbia. This led to my pulling up an overhead map of my area to find other hidden fishing spots, because City People just don't look for such things! I now have several locations where I park my vehicle and offload my boat into waters where I have NEVER seen anyone else fishing ... and the results have been OUTSTANDING !!! I'm catching boatloads of fish within 10 minutes of my house in the City, and people who learn of it are shocked. So if you drive past some water that looks as if it might have some fish in it, you may want to wet your line and find out. I did, and I've never regretted it !

Hey all - sweet video by the way! Gorgeous fish in a small stream, best setup there is! Im not sure why I chose this humble channel and gathering to unload this on, guess its just fate. I dont much watch flyfishing vids these days but YT served me up this one out of the blue, so dont blame me! Being down a few glasses of good vino is not hurting this cause as well. I am wondering if anyone else out there in hard core flyfishing land has ever, one day, just totally lost it regarding anything to do with the sport.... Humor me with just a bit of background....born in Colorado, and my dad worked next to the legend who was Jim Poor, owner of Anglers All in Littleton Co, outside of Denver. This was before he went full time in the shop, and still had a day job. Jim took a liking to my dad, and over the next 40 years they were best of friends, and for those who knew Poor, outside of his shop, they would know that he hung out with very few people on that level. I happened into this deal, with my dad throwing me in the rivers right about the same time I figured out how to walk. Nice fate! I cut my teeth in the Eagle, Fryingpan and Gunnison Rivers in the late 70s/early 80s, going to school in Gunnison, and with a smattering of the Deckers area runs thrown in for good measure. Throughout the 80s and 90s, thanks to the Poors, my dad and I spent a lot of those years on the South Island of New Zealand for around 6 weeks in Jan/Feb. The Poors were pioneers in figuring out the South Island, when no one else besides a few local Kiwis had even taken up flyfishing. Let's just say that was heaven on earth for a young, couldnt get enough, flyfisherman. Then in 2010 I found myself out in the middle of nowhere of Eastern Utah, in what is know as the Uinta Basin. I worked as a wellsite geologist, running my own show as a contractor, with every day to myself after noon or so. I happened upon a very fishy looking river which is basically a combination of Ute Res and State of Utah property, and resolved to check the place out, as there was no one ever on the river. As suspected, early spring nymphing produced browns up to a totally ridiculous 5-6 lbs, with the average around 2-3. Later into the summer, sunset dry fly sessions during the PMD hatches was as orgasmic as I had ever experienced, N.Z. included. I would show up every evening right before the sun went behind the hill, and fished until I could no longer see what the hell I was doing. Leading 4-5 pound browns on the rise with a #16 PMD in glassy, spring creek like slicks was beyond description. I would lose count of those hooked, with plenty brought to the net. I would walk out of there in the dark with a flashlight, which reminded me of 11 pm takeouts in the dead of summer on the Big Horn, watching for the break in the weeds, again with a flashlight, in order to see the takeout at 13 mile. This was before the streetlights were installed! All this while I would only very occasionally come upon a hapless guide out of Provo trying to get his clients into some fish in the nymphing runs, so I never had anyone within sight of the water I tended to work, ever. It was literally my private preserve. Then, one curious evening, I showed up as usual, but something was not quite right. I felt fine, just didnt seem to be into it like normal. I geared up as usual, waded across to my place on the river, but for some reason I just decided to watch the fish do there thing, without having any desire to mess with them. That evening changed everything, as I have not fished since. That was over 10 years ago. I just lost it for harassing trout. Totally and completely. I still love waking the banks of mountain streams and the like, just nothing there for seeing what is in there. So, I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else...I suspect it takes the better part of a lifetime to get to that point - I was like 55 when that happened, flyfishing since I was little. I have no problem with this whole deal, as I trust the intelligence of the universe to such things, and have just left it at that. Anyone seeing this who can relate at all please hit me up! Thanks!

Drew, another great video. Awesome stream with some very nice size and active/hungry trout. Love the fight that some of them gave you! Pretty much like you, I very much like to fish where others do not. I spend as much time as I can (which is a bit more now that I recently retired) fly fishing many locations in the CA Sierra as well as my home state of PA when I get back there to visit. Walking several miles or breaking through thick brush or crawling on hands and knees to get to a good spot is never a question but simply the journey and experience. Recently spent a week in NorCal mountains with a group of friends and just killed it with lots of wild trout (rainbows and browns). Most landed and released and a few that left just a memory and a reason to return again someday. Anyway....did have one Q for you? Do you have a fav app that you use for finding and navigating to some of these out of the way spots? I have looked at a few but not chosen any yet. Currently, I just use online maps and my instincts to guide me. thx, Jude

Thank u. No, like you I use maps and don't use apps. Might someday but I have more confidence in maps...always worried electronics will fail or need maintenance. I have a video on my channel, should be in the 7k mile playlist for this trip that covers how I find my spots. All I used for this series.

I've lived my whole life fishing water that looked like this, because I was born in Idaho. Watching the world react in awe in this comments section confirms just how special and rare these places are in the world. Please don't come to visit, and if you do, tread lightly.

You are an amazing fly fisherman. I’m so impressed with the reality that you do it all yourself. It’s a nice departure from watching the “pros” here on KZbin that require a local guide lead them around by the hand to every location they film at. Hopefully in the future you are comfortable enough to begin narrating and create tutorials- thank you -Travois

Great KZbin on small stream fishing for trout! Huge cuts and rainbows for such a small stream with little pocket water. These look like stream-reared, rather than stockers (square tails). To me, this is what separates the men from the boys. Catching this quality of fish this close to a bridge. This had to be fished many times. You keep working areas where you suspect there will be at least one trout. Even very small pockets. And are rewarded. It's amazing how such a small stream can support so many large trout per acre of water. This is the type of fishing my Dad used to talk about.
