In this video, I'll show you how to ty one of the most productive patterns, perfect for both beginner and experienced fly tyers b/c it's super easy, durable and most importantly effective. Without question, I always have this pattern with me but it's been especially productive in Colorado and Wyoming this summer. It's an easy pattern to ty on trips and doesn't require many materials, most of them I use in several patterns, like the caddis shown in my last video. I sometimes add a UV coating to the body and wing case to give it even more durability but even w/o it, this fly will hold up and catches a lot of fish!
Materials:
sz 14-16 (16 being most used)
UTC 70 black
CDL
Small gold wire (or your choice)
Turkey Biot Quills
Z-lon
Hare's ear dubbing

Hi there, .. nice job with your videos .. I am wondering, if you use any type of cement on the body, after you're done, to prevent fraying .. or, maybe you don't have problems, with that? .. thanks!

How do you like your Peak, Drew?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy Жыл бұрын
I really like it. It does everything I need and not complicated. Great for nymphs, midges and dries.. but maybe lacks the weight and jaw strength for dedicated streamer tying...buggers, coneheads are fine. Doesn't cost a fortune...so I'll bring it with my on my road trips.

I mostly tie all my nymphs with tungsten beads, seems to be the most effective under a hi visibility parachute adams. This is my main rig. How do you fish this un weighted pattern Drew? I sometimes enjoy tying unweighted nymphs, but I don’t have much success with them. I fish the driftless here in Wisconsin. Just looking for rigging ideas, I would like to try more unweighted nymph patterns, but how to fish them effectively? Thanks. Huge fan of your videos by the way!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 жыл бұрын
I fish a lot of unweighted flies using split shot to adjust the depth. Allows me to fish shallow riffles, shallow pockets or sight fish skinny water. I also fish a ton of tandem nymph rigs with a beadhead on top and an unweighted fly dropped as my 2nd fly. The unweighted fly takes a ton of fish in this situation b/c of the natural movement you get with unweighted flies!

Those work most days...on lightly fished Freestones. But on tailwaters, still waters and heavily fished Freestones, you often gotta match the hatch.

It definitely could have been b/c it caught fish. But I travel west to fish dries which often means adding a dropper...so I fish more beadhead flies out west during the summer and this is unweighted. I fish this one more while nymphing as my 2nd fly off a bh fly!

That's awesome! Learning to ty really completed the fly fishing experience for me. I haven't done one yet, mostly b/c there are so many on yt already. But my 2 favorite are shown in the, the only flies you need on a summer road trip out west. You probably already know but Tim Flagler of tightline video has great tutorials...where I went when I got started!

@@LooknFishy Thanks for the quick replay. I have watched several videos and people each have their own style. Could you tell me what supplies you use the make the fly. I've been trying to figure out of it is black dubbing or thread and if it has a brass wire or is it flash film. Also is it a 3mm tungsten bead or 3.5mm.

Nice fly, its a fishermen’s fly, good use of materials, functional to be used to catch trout not used to impress your abilities to tie perfect replicas. I watch a famous fly tier who makes perfect flies. I eventually watched a KZbin of him fishing a stream. 30 minutes into it he hadn’t caught a fish. Must have been a bad day. 😊
