We are currently in South Fork, Co. I’m trying to fish the Rio Grande and the water is low. We drove up to Rio Grande reservoir a few days ago and the lake is a green mess, full of algae. It’s dumping all that green water so the Rio Grande is green slime all the way to Creede. All the rocks are covered in algae. I don’t see how insects that trout feed on can survive. Further downstream past Creede the water looks better but I’m having no success. If Colorado has another winter with little snow pack I can’t imagine many of Colorados rivers trout population surviving another drought summer. We were at Grand Lake for 4th of July and every afternoon there was rain showers. Since mid July the monsoons have disappeared. I fished the Conejos near where you fished last week. The river looked like a creek compared to you video. Had modest success with some LooknFishy browns.
@LooknFishy3 жыл бұрын
Yea, I stopped heading to CO after mid July bc of the low water and challenging conditions. Seems like it's getting worse every year.
@KJRitch3 жыл бұрын
@@LooknFishy Made on last attempt on the Rio Grande not too far downstream from Blue Creek Lodge this morning and managed to catch 5 or 6 browns of various sizes. The larger two browns didn’t seem energetic. One was very dark in color. I’m wondering if they are being affected by the low water and higher temperatures earlier this summer. After about 11am they seemed to stop feeding.

All it takes is wanting to do it, sometimes, being retired is best. a suitable vehicle and some money I would bet the daily expenses of fuel, oil, and food is fairly low. This would be out of a lot of people's comfort zone. There is a hell of a lot of great trout fishing to be had, In the United States and in Canada. All you have to do is be is self-contained and have a good sound reliable vehicle. A few good books to read at night and when the weather is not good. I doubt if he has more than 35 to 45 dollars in daily expenses. It would be interesting what the costs are when the trip is over. Two or three months, I am thinking 2K a month would be plenty give or take.
@LooknFishy3 жыл бұрын
Truth...my cost wasn't close to that. I don't include food...gotta eat no matter where I'm parked. Fuel and licenses were my main expenses. Fuel could have been less had I not driven 7k miles and picked one state rather than 4..

@LooknFishy3 жыл бұрын
Idaho starts Sept 30th and runs for over a month. I like a 7.5ft rod...short to stay under the canopy but enough length to cast over it also. I don't typically, I prefer the lightest presentation I can get since I'm mostly casting dries and not roll casting much. Tried the SA creek which felt maybe a half size large and it was great for fast loading and roll casting but drove my dries down so I switched back to my orvis pro textured on my 3wt.
