Diablo Carbide Tipped Reciprocating Saw Pruning Blade

A Quick demonstration tip I found using the Diablo Carbide Tipped Reciprocating Saw Pruning Blade cutting green wood. The technique shown is clearing the saw dust blade chips using the whole length of the blade. This proved useful in cutting speed with using the 12 volt Milwaukee Fuel (brushless) Hackzall.
Cutting though a rhododendron bush.

11/23/22..Drew, enjoyed yur video 2day. Demo of my favorite in-dirt root cutting blade. Diablo TCI Pruning blade is the best. Now yur next vid hope to see you plunge...submerge...the blade full length into a known root area in need of cutting. You may need a little larger (18v) battery recip saw..but all eyes/viewers will be impressed. Also I use this blade to cut roots when doing fence post placement..this blade is tremendous! Look forward to next video where you submerge blade into dirt & cut a circle for either fence posts or planting a favorite new shrub. Also great camera work, close-ups etc. Give us more!⚙️💪👏👍👍👍😊

I have the same blade. The teeth closest to guard will always be much more worn than the teeth closer to tip (because the tip rarely gets used). I think that’s why your method works better - it’s using more of the unused teeth closer to the tip.

Longer blades are for thicker materials. If you are only cutting a thin piece, use a short blade.

I think also because the compact recip saws have a short stroke - this is a good tip

@@gregoreau Not ALL "Compact" reciprocating saws have shorter than standard 1-1/8" stroke. One popular example is DeWalt's "Compact" DCS367 which has the full 1-1/8" stroke and can easily be used with one hand because its center of weight is not projecting too far out from its hand grip.

IKR? I was taught to NOT do that, to always have it firmly planted on the work via the shoe.. Saw the raking action on a Japanese pruning saw vid, won't go back.

A full sized reciprocating saw doesn't have issues with clearing the gullets ,but I really enjoyed this tip for smaller one handed hackzalls as I've had the same problems with not clearing chips because of the shorter stroke length, thanks

I honestly never thought about it but your exactly right that’s the main reason saw zalls aren’t ideal for wood is because unlike a chainsaw there isn’t anywhere for the chips to go

I really hate to say this. But the blade isn’t the weak link. It’s the Milwaukee itself, the stroke on their sawzall types just suck. Even my harbor freight Bauer reciprocating saw at 1/3 the price runs circle around the almighty Milwaukee.

try using some spray lubricant on the blade and see if that improves the cutting.

In second and 3rd cut you used both arms and hands. That puts more pressure on blade as well and is faster

Use the 3 TPI for tree cutting, they're the best, more aggressive. For this type of job the bigger reciprocating saw would do it so much faster, I have the RIDGID R8647b and a branch like this would cut it in 3 seconds because it has the orbital mode, you can only get the orbital mode in the Milwaukee top of the line Super Sawzall 👍 no doubt Milwaukee is better made but you have to pay for it 🤣 With the Ridgid, 4 amp regular batteries cost 2 for $99 with a charger on sale. One 4 amp battery with the R8647B reciprocating saw at full throttle non stop will last you approximately 25 minutes, full throttle non stop, I tested it on a tree stump that I needed to remove and the number one thing is that the tool doesn't shut off or bog down. The tool heats up but never stops, "warms up" took me (2.5) 4 amp batteries to finish cutting out the tree stump but you do need those diablo carbide 3 tpi demo blades 12".

I know it's an old post but sometimes Diablo runs similar specials, it's actually how I ended up getting my carbide blades from them.. Yah for the price of these carbides though I wouldn't hesitate to get Milwaukee or Lennox carbides if Diablo didnt have a deal but I'd prefer Diablos. For example as of now (may-9-2023) the 2 pack of 9" carbide pruning blades are $9.47 so im gonna grab em. Actually didn't know they were on sale until checking. The 2 pack of framing blades for $12.88 are a killer deal too when they have em..

You should have made sure that your battery was fully charged before you made the video because your battery honestly sounds just about dead so it's not gonna cut nearly as good when the battery isn't working at full potential and power.

M12 Hackzall? I'd spend the extra money and get the bigger brother M18. Paired with even a 5.0 XC battery, it has decent runtime compared to the M12 6.0 XC (even though Milwaukee recommends a 6.0 for the Hackzall, and 8.0 or higher for the Sawzall). Also you'll cut much faster with the rocking motion than the push/pull method, and less stain on both the blades and the tool. Otherwise the Hackzall is a perfect companion in conjunction with a (gas) chainsaw, for getting into really tight places a chainsaw will not fit in.

Some people are invested in the M12 line so why would you buy an M18 if you don’t need one? Yes the M12 Hackzall isn’t the best tool for this job but this could be a very small part of what he uses this tool for. I have an M12 and use it for pruning as well but to be honest if I was cutting this stump I’d be using my Stihl. For regular pruning nothing beats the light weight of my M12!

I think even with the m18 hackzall the stroke length is still less than a full size recip iirc. Personally I invest in a full size recip saw but im sure in tight areas the extra time needed because stroke length makes up for the accessibility of this smaller saw.

I know this is 3 years old now but I'm hoping you can still answer a few questions :) us that hacksaw the fuel version or non fuel. What battery were you usuing. And how many cuts can you get out of the battery. Thanks so much

I know this isnt a direct answer but I'd be using the 4ah or 6ah battery for doing heavy work like this. Save the 2.0 compacts for the drill or ratchet. The 2 vs 4ah battery for my impact fuel driver is night and day difference, in my hammer drill and ratchet not soo much..

It would clear the chips if you use a saw that has a longer stroke

Indeed, also a nice orbital action stroke saw would satisfy the chip removal. My demonstration was just with a 12volt brushless hackzall.

Well of course it's better, i think the hacksawll types only have 3/4 inch stroke vs 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 full size recips and then you add orbital and it's apples to oranges. This raking technique seems to help clear chips on such a short stroke length on these 1 handed saws.

I don't know if you are familiar those blades and tool. the blade name is pronounced De-AH-Blo, ”the TPI is 6T, that blade is a demolition wood blade for embedded nails, (the wood block on the blade) the cut in the blade is called 'the gullet', you dont have to move that much to clear the gullets but if it works for you fine. use a pruning blade thats what its designed for...

I've used those blades a couple years and have to say you need a better reciprocating saw. Longer stroke, orbital action for starters. Unimpressed by that reciprocating saw.

Reciprocating saws are a little more versatile in that they can handle around dirt using carbide tipped blades. Useful for when you need to cut roots or close to the base of a plant and not worry about damaging the blade. Low kickbacks are a big plus too! = )
