Ironically, to make the jawline look SNATCHED, the loss of body fat percentage, Tretinoin 0.05% cream, sunscreen, and anything designed to keep elastin and collagen production high will work far better after 1 year than mewing ever could in an adult lifetime. Barring that, there's extreme surgery. It helps to have good genetics and facial bone structure to begin with.

In the before/after pictures we see on the Orthotropics channel there's a lot of other factors affecting the results. We see no makeup/good makeup, bad lighting/good lighting, fatter/leaner, younger/older, curved posture/straight posture, prominent Adam's apple/the disappearence of said piece of cartilage, not bone, in another part of the body - neck, not in the head, magically gone...(a.k.a. plastic surgery or photoshop). It's like getting an old, rusty, beat up car saying you'll change the broken bumper and that will make the car look a lot better. You take a picture of "before." Overhaul the whole vehicle with a bunch of different procedures, then take the "after" picture. "Notice the huge difference," you say, "My new bumper makes this car look a lot better, isnt it?" I don't care what excuse is given in a few videos among the dozens. Everybody knows how that's misleading, they do it anyway. It's scammy. Like most of the beauty industry.

Then I drew frankfort and mandibular planes to see if there was any forward growth + took some other measurements to see if people were underbiting to make jaw appear more forward-grown. There was not a single person that got even an extra millimiter of maxillary forward growth among those photos after 2 years of mewing. It doesn't work , like , at all. And it makes sense if you look at Mew's animation of how mewing works - dude skipped mechanics at school apparently. Every single impressive before and after is due to these reasons : 1) Angle or lightning fraud 2) People intentionally underbiting 3) Puberty 4) People having a significantly lower bf% 5) People losing buccal fat 6) People getting surgery and larping as mewers (AstroSky had surgical augmentations , for example) The only actual benefit of mewing is posture.

I'm 59 and I've been mewing for about three years now. If anything, I've gone from having multiple chins that my daughter used to make fun of to one chin. I grew a beard to hide my chins. I've now shortened and reshaped my beard to accentuate my jawline now that I have one. I can't say that my jawbone has changed shape, but I can feel it's sharper. My wife touched it recently and exclaimed "What's that?". It was the back of my jaw bone. As for breathing I have noticed it does feel clearer when mewing. It just seems feels obstructed; not that I had a problem with breathing before. Even if the shape of my jawbone is not changing, like any workout that targets one area of the body, it does have an impact on reducing the fat that's hanging around it. Mewing does no harm, so I'll keep going. I don't think I will ever chew a dog toy though, and chewing gum loses its flavour too quickly, but I am eating more chewable red meat and less soft foods.

a lot of people that are making mewing content DONT HAVE A RECESSED JAW. I have a very recessed jaw, I literally look like the diagram at the beginning they show. I’ve been told surgery is my only option but I’m incredibly afraid to do that cuz I have always had uncontrollable vommitting after anesthesia. I can’t imagine what would happen if my mouth was wired shut. So im gonna give it a go and see what happens, probably won’t turn into a model but if I can maybe get rid of the pocket below my lips where my chin should be but isn’t that’d be cool! And if I still end up needing surgery, it’d be nice to not need as dramatic a move!

I starting doing this in my early teens (female) to help with breathing. I’m a nose breather now as an adult but my face is not any different. There is an immediate improvement with good tongue posture but I have not noticed a structural change and neither has my orthodontist. I wish it did work but I think it has to be implemented a lot earlier (like baby teeth early). I don’t believe it will work for anyone over 16 period. It’s really helpful if you grew up with allergies though and don’t know how to breathe right.

I started at about 17 and it definitely works, albeit harder. I am 18 now with almost like a thousand of progress vids on my Google drive and it's still currently a big effort that I need to put in into fully changing my lifestyle. Main difference though is that it's become my main habit to put the daily effort in making sure that I have optimal tongue posture and everything. One thing to also note is that the body posture has a big impact on the tongue posture (and it's usually one of the reasons why people have bad tongue posture in the first place), so you also need to make sure that you're getting all your muscle imbalances and bad habits fixed (e.g. uneven pelvic tilt, weak core, rounded shoulders, forward head, and etc.)

Practicing good tongue posture will look and feel better though. I’m sorry you’re unhappy with your face. If it really bothers you, there are cosmetic treatments available. It’s not hopeless.

Oh yeah over chewing makes my muscles in my jaw and face feel extra extra tight and almost impossible to open. There is one exercise that a actually tmj specialist recommends. You out your hand under your jaw and you push up on it. Without opening your mouth you lower your jaw and push against the resistance. Its building the right muscles to be used so your jaw opens the right way. When we chew we use all sorts of different motions and muscles and we tend to favor one side as well. Your hand under the jaw provides the right amount of resistance anx targets the proper muscles.

I started it purely because it's still proper tongue posture and would encourage nose breathing as opposed to mouth breathing. I already had a decent jawline though. I've done it for about a year (started around when I turned 20) and have noticed minimal jawline changes that could have also just been a result of dropping my bfp following fitness and nutrition goals. It's also worth noting that the posture itself pulls the area under your jaw in a little as well as closing your jaw to the point where your teeth are almost touching squares your face more. If you take a side look at your face in the mirror and switch between holding the posture and fully relaxing it you can see what I mean. I've trained it to the point where I believe I still hold the posture when I'm asleep (fall asleep holding the tongue/jaw posture and wake up still holding it) which has forced me to breath out of my nose while I sleep, leading to better sleep and my throat doesn't dry out in dryer seasons from mouth breathing. If I'm congested though it can be hard to fall asleep because I have to break the posture a little to breath out of my mouth. Overall I think it's been mildly beneficial, took about 4 days to hold it without thinking about it, I don't regret it. The largest benefit has been the nose breathing. I also don't over chew. I would be interested in seeing a large scale study on how effective it is when you start in childhood but good luck convincing kids to try to hold the posture every day, many already sit like gargoyles.

My posture got better even though I didn't pay any attention to it. Mewing has been life changing for me. There is no peer reviewed research on mewing on anything, but there is overwhelming evidence on mewing does actually works. And I'm forever grateful I found mewing when I was young, the health benefit of improved airway and better posture is priceless. Also note that this is only my personal experience, I cannot speak for everyone else. And what makes a face attractive is forward growth, you can have good jawline without forward growth and it still won't look good.

A lot of the exercises to improve her breathing and swallowing are similar to the mewing techniques. She is six, though. So in theory, starting this young, she will be able to improve her breathing and swallowing. I discovered mewing after researching my daughter’s needs. I used to work fot Professor Mew in the late 1980's. I was a trainee technician, making braces as per his direction for the patient's (mainly young). He was a good boss and much fun on a Friday - always cracking open a bottle of Sherry. I saw the results of his work and being only 18 and had my own conventional orthodontic treatment with 4 extractions plus 4 wisdom teeth extracted - he explained how unnecessary the extractions were. I have many gaps as a 51 year old adult and my facial structure would have looked very different without the extraction. ❤ to Pr Mew

I noticed that over the past two years I was clenching my jaw VERY tightly in varying positions during sleep, and it would often wake me up, at which point I would take note of it. (Sometimes clenching to the right, sometimes to the left, sometimes center and down.) I have recently implemented this mewing tongue-placement technique and it now comes automatically to me at night, whether I am asleep or just reading and relaxing in bed. It has been a game-changer in that regard. When I was clenching I was having horrendous jaw fatigue and buzzing sensations during the day that were extremely uncomfortable and sometimes distressing, due to the strange sensations it caused in my head, neck and jaw. It has now become automatic, all with very little practice! It will be interesting to see what, if any other changes, over time present themselves. ;0)

It was a great surprise for me to learn (some time ago) that not everyone just rests their tongue at the roof of their mouth. I mean, when the mouth is closed, there is just enough space inside to squish the tongue in the mouth cavity, it takes all the space! And it takes some force to curl it inside or do anything else besides let it lie there. So it sounded weird. But at the same time tongue placement sounds just like mouth posture, so there may be some truth in that. Tongue positioning during formative age probably does influence face growth, so there must be a little truth to that. I don't think you can easily make a child swallow correctly, for example. So... yeah. Sounds like mewing is just misapplied.

The tongue position is not the harmful part of mewing. The chewing part is what the bullshit. I have a natural defined jawline and I've always kept my tongue on the roof of my mouth. The thing about tongue position you dont have to overthink it, what I mean is that you dont have to push your tongue to your palate. Just keep it there, the natural swallowing will cause a vacuum which will push your tongue against your roof. Now this doesn't sound much, but the tongue is stronger than you would think. Every swallow causes the tongue to push against the palate with a 2.5kg of force, this is actually factual look it up. Now 1000x2.5kg of force daily is could be strong enough. Also you have to wear a jaw aid, to make your mouth shut during sleep, to force you breath through your nose. Will this change your face? Not sure. Cause I don't think there is a proper study on this with adults that finished developing, above 20-25. And youtube and tiktok shorts are not studies, just anecdotes. 3/4 of those "proofs" are just shitty angle changes and losing weight. Most of the definition you want you would get with losing fat percentage anyway. I know this personally cause when I was 22 I had 14-15% now I have 25% body fat and I lost my definition cause I gain fat to my face first. So it's still there I just have to lose weight.

I've been practicing proper tongue posture and pushing my tongue towards the roof of my mouth for about 4-6 years, long before it was a tiktok trend, starting around age 16-18. I've noticed almost zero changes in my jawline, however my jaw pops less, and I don't feel like I have to pull my jaw back so far to close my teeth together. My permanent retainer came out at the age of 19, almost 3 years ago, and I lost the upper removable retainer very soon after getting my braces removed at 16. I've had almost no malocclusion and have not had any teeth or jaw issues since. I believe practicing orthotropics is partially responsible for my positive results without retainers while my jaw finished developing. On the other hand, over time my jawline has become less defined. the culprit? weight gain. body fat %. if you want a more defined jawline, lose facial fat, and push the back of your tongue up towards your soft palette while moving your larynx up when at rest (the last part is an immediate change, you'll also notice an adams apple shift up if you have one. I've done this for years from when I was overweight as a kid to hide a double chin. it's entirely voluntary muscle positioning, no bone changes or muscle hypertrophy exercises needed, just simple facial posture). Any "looksmaxing" claims are likely BS.

Tounge posture and body posture are NATURAL WAYS of being. ”Danger to rely on mewing”…? What, why? If you deal with severe sleep apnea then maybe mewing isn’t the only way to go of course. It takes time. Don’t be stupid. For some people other measues will be necessary. Also ”people can fake results by tilting their head”. Nah sorry not to a trained eye, and not with an x-ray. it would've been nice of you to say what part of mewing premise comes from mews themselves and what from unwashed internet hacks. if you look at what mike mew says it's 1) the process is slow 2) it is very hard after 25 and the best age to do it is 6-8 years old 3) excessive chewing is bad if you haveany jaw joint problems 4) it, being maxillary upswing, may help (once again - very slowly) against sleep apnea IF it is in fact caused by the bone structure and 5) if you don't have sleep apnea yet but developed unfavourable facial structure then fixing your tongue posture may prevent it if reduce the severity 10-20 years ahead and may make you overall healthier.

As someone who's done face yoga for several years, where mewing is a part of it, I can say when I stop doing it, jowling starts again and my face goes south for the winter. So in terms of teaching you facial muscle awareness and correcting your posture overall it's amazing (as face yoga teaches you, just like regular yoga, to sit up tall and roll your shoulders back, don't hunch etc.) . I used to have such a tight jaw that it dragged my right side down significantly more than the left. I can feel the difference as I used to grind my teeth on my left side. I also noticed improvement to my neck and cheeks being higher when I worked on relaxing the muscles in the face that are propagandistically pulling my face DOWN. BUT I have always had a strong jaw and a cut side profile. No mewing or face yoga is going to get someone that. It will simply tighten and tone facial muscles, or relax them if you focus on that. That's it. And it takes being consistent a few minutes daily.

You claim to have researched Dr. Mews' techniques and theories, but even after only watching some of his videos it is immediately obvious to me that your criticism of his techniques & theories fails to acknowledge or refute his actual claims for how & why it is effective which is absolutely critical! Then you begin to make speculations abbot his claims being impossible which you assert to be logically & factually sound despite your flawed & incomplete conceptualization & characterization pig his work. Essentially you are using a form of a straw man argument which is obviously inherently flawed & misleading. In order to legitimately "debunk" mewing you MUST falsify its actual claims and mechanisms! Let me clarify that I'm not accusing you of doing so intentionally or knowingly, or with malevolence; I can not know these things. I am merely expressing & explaining the discrepancies which I have observed. You speculate that mewing can not possibly be effective based on the notion that bone growth has terminated by 16. First of all, you do not even address one of the core & central tenets of his theory regarding the importance of cartilage growth; leaving an obvious gaping hole in your understanding and in your argument. You also fail to acknowledge the well-known and undisputed fact that broken bones can & DO heal into very old age which clearly involves a mechanism of growth! Until you actually address the true claims that Dr. Mew is making in a complete and accurate manner your assessment is moot! I can not claim that his techniques work or that they do not work; but I can confidently say that your assessment is invalid merely because it does not even properly address his claims!

I'm really curious about your thoughts regarding the argument that mewing is not necessarily about directing skeletal growth, but of repositioning what is already there. Dr. Mew talks about the bones in the palate not being fused together, making this possible. One observation he makes that I found striking is the effect of loss of muscle control in the bone structure in some people. Specifically, he mentions the distortion in facial structure suffered by Stephen Hawking as his condition deteriorated. The onset of his illness began as he already was a "fully formed" adult whose bone growth had stopped. Still, one can see the extreme distortion of his face due to the repositioning of the bones. This raises the question, if bones can be change position that way, can't they also change position for the better? Thanks for your videos, I very much enjoy your channel!

I first looked into mewing about a month or so ago. I don't go on tiktok, so this was just the trend leaking out and me finally looking up to see what it was. I realised that I already did a lot of the stuff to do with tongue posture, the only thing I was lacking in tongue posture was the back third touching my hard palate. I am not a constant mouthbreather, but I definitely do it sometimes. I can snore sometimes; I have a lot of nasal/sinus issues. My palates are very narrow and I've had 4? teeth out because there wasn't enough room for them. I don't have much of a chin, but I think I have an okay jawline. And so this instantly made me intrigued but sceptical. Could doing some little tweaks help me breathe better? I have no interest in my jawline or chin, but could a few changes to how I hold myself and my tongue make me feel better? Anyway it's however long later now, and the answer is no. I feel exactly the same. It's not done anything within a month, not even for my breathing. I am exactly the same as I was when I started it. Obviously it's a long-term change, and I am an adult, but I was expecting something. I guess because I already mostly did it, I already developed how I was going to according to this theory. My chinless wonder semi-mouthbreathing self is apparently the peak of mewing, having accidentally done it since I was a child. (this has also been very interesting to me from a linguistics perspective - at university I was taught that where you held your tongue in a neutral position depended on the language you speak. In English speakers, you normally hold your tongue up against the hard palate, whereas in some other languages, their neutral position is further down. I have not seen this brought up once about mewing, so I'd be interested to see if there is actually any discussion on it.)

I'm not sure I understand this. I have been doing all of these techniques naturally and as soothing for my autism my whole 40 years. I was also breast fed. I have a very weak jaw and jawline even when underweight. It's called genetics. My family is english peasant in body and face. Bone structure, fat distribution, and facial muscle shape can't be changed by anything except plastic surgery. This whole movement along with every other beauty movement, is designed by people who have it to shame people who don't into buying what they are selling. Stop falling for it and find beauty in what you have... for all you know it may be next years fad... people are fickle enough.

It's important not to confuse the widespread trend, and whatever influencers are doing, with what the Mews are saying and doing. On social media the fad to ruin your jaw joint to look slightly better is strongly against what the Mews are advocating for. As you said, their main disclaimer is that mewing has limited effect for adults, especially without applying it properly, with a professional. What they are strongly advocating for is children to use mewing (often with appliances) to avoid irreversible and possibly damaging operations. A lot of their exercises are just generally healthy, and make you pay attention to things that matter for other than looks. For example they have an exercise where you tilt your head a bit forward (from neutral) and tuck your chin in: a lot of people, especially ones that work on computers, often have their head in the opposite of that position (tilt head backward, and push their head forward), which of course leads to neck and backpain. Same for tongue posture. I think all (at least most) the negatives you said here were addressing problems with the popular trend, not what Mewing is actually about. Which from one perspective is fair and evne good, because more people are exposed to the trend than to the content Mike Mew and his team, but with that you also necessarily misrepresent mewing, and orthotropics in general. I'm not even advocating for orthotropics, I have no idea about it, but it seems like it's consistently attacked, misrepresented and/or disregarded for no good reasons. Unfortunately it's also used and advocated for because of the wrong reasons, like on many social media channels.

I tried mewing as a form of facial exercise along with biting down on one of those hand stress balls (mine is egg shaped) and within a month I no longer had to crack my jaw to open my mouth. TMJ from an auto accident years ago created a locked jaw upon waking every morning and often when eating. Im pleased to say its been about eight months since my jaw has locked. I do these exercises about 3 times a week now. Thank you for the video!

I did orthotropics as a kid because i was a mouth breather and my mouth didn't grow because of poor tongue placement. I think it did work but it took 2 years for my 2 front teeth to overlap *less*. I ended up with braces and a palate expander as a teenager and that was much more effective/painful.

My father was an orthodontist. He told me that children that live in very cold climate need more braces and jaw surgery because it changes your jaw position when you constantly breath mouth open (to warm the air before inhaling.) So your behavior can change your jaw, but mostly only in your childhood!
@marik9897
@marik9897 8 ай бұрын
As someone who lives in a very cold climate, this not really true. Children here are always taught NOT to breathe with their mouth open, since it's actually the opposite - breathing through the nose the air has a chance to warm up, breathing through the mouth it doesn't and you're way more likely to end up with a sore throat / bad cough.

I mean... I GUESS having kids and teens chew on dog toys would work but alternatively, you could just give them some crunchy granola bars and carrots every now and then. Teach them proper oral posture (mouth closed, tongue on roof of mouth, not pushing on teeth, as he described), and give them crunchy food on occasion. That's it, you don't need to go smacking on Fido's chew toy like it's gum

Funnily enough, I have always held my tongue against the roof of my mouth. It just always felt weird doing it any other way for whatever reason, but I also eventually developed such overactive masseter muscles that their size and tightness became a massive issue. So much so that as an adult they got so strong, I could barely open my mouth wider than a child's mouth range (I discovered this when I went in for a procedure and they went to put a breathing tube in my mouth and the guard to protect my teeth was was too big (adult size) and the child size was almost too big as well. The increase in size and strength of my masseter muscles also (unknown to me as it took me years to figure out what was even going on - I did not even know there were muscles called Masseter, haha) was causing migraines, tension headaches, severe jaw pain, ear ringing, interrupted sleep, teeth grinding, and even severe clenching during times that I should not have been clenching, not to mention the worst of it was when the muscles would cramp up and then one would overpower the other pulling my entire jaw to one side or the other, also forcing my mouth closed with me actively having to fight against it. I went to see someone about the muscles and to hopefully get help and when they saw the size and tension of them, they were shocked, and they have dealt with patients for this before. I ended up having to have Botox injected into each muscle to bring down the size and strength and it was almost instant (within a few days at most) the change in all the issues I listed above. I basically said all that to say, I personally would be careful working out the masseter muscles, haha, as the fact that mine did whatever they did and caused me so many issues and so much pain due to their size,, strength, and constant tension for years was a horrible experience.

Out of curiosity, is there anything surgical or cosmetic that can be done to minimize that under-chin softness when it's caused by the position of the hyoid bone? I'm very thin but still have a soft under-chin area, due largely to hyoid position, and IDK if I'd ever get anything done to change it, but I'm still curious to know whether it's even possible. Thanks for another awesome, informative video!

I tried mewing back in 2016 when I was like 14 years old, and it really helped define my jaw, also I was pretty fit back then so I did see a difference while maintaining a healthy body weight. However, I only did it for a couple months to a year, then I stopped. I'm not really insecure about how I look so I wasn't really bothered to continue. But, after that I had Invisalign for 2 years, and after I was done, they told me like they tell everyone else to wear your retainers every night, for the rest of your life. So, that's what I've been doing. They were pretty straight for a while after I was done with Invisalign, but now not so much. When I was younger, I also had to wear an appliance at the roof of my mouth to expand my upper teeth because they were narrow. It worked, but I realize that when I try to mew now, it's a bit hard to fit my tongue comfortably. So, I want to start mewing again in hopes that it could potentially expand my palette again, and to also not rely on my retainers for straight teeth, when my tongue (in theory) can keep the shape from becoming crooked and overcrowded. My breathing has always been fine. Also, I've been having issues with my hip for a couple of years. I did some physical therapy last summer for a couple months and that stretches helped only a little. My doctor told me I will never be 100% pain free, but it shouldn't stop me from exercising. I feel uncomfortable to push myself exercising now, so I feel very unhappy at times. I did a lot of research on why my hip is misaligned in the first place. Recently, I found out that the hips and jaw or connected, which made me have a revelation. My jaw is misaligned, so are my teeth, so are my hips, everything is starting to make sense. Yeah, obviously my posture is bad too. But it's not so easy to correct as I thought it was, it's more than just doing stretches everyday, it's about correcting bad habits that have caused the posture in the first place. Like sitting in office chairs all day on your computer, which is what I do for my job. So, I doubt mewing will actually have a significant positive impact on my health, but I'm going to try whatever I can at this point. Stretching, and correcting bad habits (making lifestyle changes) to improve posture and asymmetry in my body.
