Selling art on Instagram is probably one of the easiest ways for selling your art online as long as you fully understand that art collectors don’t buy because of you. They buy because of themselves. They buy your art because of their reasons not your reasons. Therefore one of the most crucial steps in selling art online is understanding the motives of the art collectors that you’re approaching. It’s only buy understand why they want to buy your art that you will be able to sell art. In this video we will be covering several ways that you can use to reveal their motives and position your art according to their needs and desires.
What follows is a small summary of the most important reasons for collectors to buy art:
- Sense of local community networking opportunity (the community of art collectors is highly appreciated and is an ideal place to network)
- Desire to own (claiming their piece of art history)
- Desire to impress (decorative purpose or verbal ways of impressing people)
- Desire to win (using art to further business practices, ex. Using the contrast principle in your favor by putting very expensive art in a piece of real estate to make the property look cheap compared to the art)
- Personal branding and personality reasons
- Peace of mind (ex. they are very vulnerable for feelings of FOMO, fear of mission out, and are afraid that they will miss on the opportunity that is going on with your art at this moment)
- Social purpose (loneliness or otherwise resulting in a desire to connect with the artist)
- Survival instinct… (they want to be remembered after they die and want to leave a legacy behind, donating a collection to a museum can assure having a section of the museum named after you)
- Problem solving (the more they believe you solve one of their problems the more likely they will buy from you)
- Recovery (recovering from emotional pain can be a reason for buying art related to those pain points, buying art becomes a financial or material commitment to dealing with those emotional pain points)
- Feeling of emptiness and loneliness in their life
- Passion (they believe what you believe, you have the same passions and find common ground in that on an emotional level)
- Sense of global community and way of giving back (knowing how important art is for culture and humanity and a desire to participate in this act)
- Desire to own (collector gene and desire to build out collections)
- Fear (the fear of losing something is greater then the fear of gaining something, this might be the only time they can buy this piece, and once it is gone it will likely be gone for extended periods of time and never come to the market again)
- Desire to impress (impressing guests with mind blowing stories around the art they own or around the artist who made the works)
- Preserving history
- Financial gain (art collectors who are thinking about the potential massive financial returns they will be making)
- Vanity (they put a lot of value and thought in how people perceive them and want to polish that image as much as possible) closely related to a desire to impress…
- If I missed any motive or reason for buying art (which is very much possible) please let me know in the comment section.

This is a great channel! Watched most of it so far and what Dries is telling you is acute. It's the same type of things I teach the artist I work with every day at zero profit Orphanage Gallery that sold 450 works last year and its only open 36 days a year. and other galleries I own and run. This is the man to listen to if your an artist starting out. Hands down without a doubt. He is saving you decades of mistakes. He is way better than most of the art gurus out there. Best of all you can tell he's still learning each day about the art business which tells me he's doing this stuff he talks about. Could I say more about how good this stuff is Yes I could. - Bill Montana

@@RolledtightRecords look for artist managers. My partner helped me get my artwork into a gallery by managing me. I had the artwork but they helped me focus on which areas and galleries to target and also was a great motivator. This guy knows what he’s talking about he mentioned how artist are unorganized for the most part and focus on the art so basically a manager is what some artist need in my opinion.

Also, a good bridge towards making sales is to invite collectors you meet, or people you meet at openings to your art studio. I've invited collectors, couples, art mangers to my studio in the past and having some kind of open studio day/afternoon is a nice way to connect. They might see a piece of work they want or want to come back to see your progress. And inviting journalists (who write about cultural/art events) is a good one. I found that they enjoy the kind of "front row seat" experience, especailly of you are a rising star in the community/amongst local galleries that they might also be writing about.

Driiiiiiies. I’ve gotten addicted to your voice as I’m overhauling my website and portfolio. After about a decade of abandoning my art for more “practical” things (like burning myself out in car sales 💀 very practical 😂), I’ve created a new Instagram account and am drilling down on creating sales in 2022 & beyond. Thank you for all your delicious, helpful content. And your work is lovely, too. ❤️

I have noticed that many of the creative people I follow most don't have that many posts! It happens on patreon though. I didn't want lots of followers until now because my art wasn't where I wanted it to be. That's excellent advice, Dries. It would work better for me than trying to get likes and follows. I've always had friendships that are deep instead of wide.

What you said at 12:00 really struck me, it finally helped understand that written form on a virtual platform is actually as important as written form through writing letters. Instrumental stuff. I love your attention to detail on human psychology and how you limit yourself from being so outwardly mechanical on approaching humans. HA

Hell Dries! First of all,I'm happy to find your video's on KZbin and i have started following you,and can't get enough of you! Second, I would like to take your offer and ask you a question: In this video you're talking of reason why collectors buy paintings and if i understood correctly, one of the reason is the story! My question is: when i decide to post picture of my painting do i write a stosy how i was inspired and what kind of feelings have I had while painting this peace and etc? Also should I make short video of the same painting to go with picture and story? Thank you so much for your time! P.S. I love your work!

Dear Dries, I don't mean to polemize but I just found out about your videos, it's all very interesting but it's one more video of an artist teaching artists how to sell online or toherwise. I wonder if these artists do these videos simply because they don't have so many buyers as they claim and they try to survive with this videos. I'm not saying it's your personal case but this is just a doubt I have.

Hi Dries, I opened my ig account this year (now I have 1.030 followers) and like to use a lot of different techniques. I want to sell art, so I do commisions and people want different styles, so I do all of them and post on my feed, so one day I have the portrait of colored pencils and other day I post landscape (oil on canvas) that is on sale. I really enjoy all of them and wrote in my bio that I use a lot of tecniques, but is it bad? Is it bad that I'm not unique and don't have my own style? Or could I use this as my power and start selling more?

i would actually buy art because of the energy of the painting or how the energy of the painter feels to me. If these dont feel good to me and if the painting doesnt spark something astonishing inside me, i wouldnt want that piece of art in my house. This is also the reason why i watch your channel. I am drawn to your vibe and your enthusiasm. Even if the content of a channel or painting is awesome, if i dont like the vibe of the presenter/painter, i cant follow or buy anything from him/her. Would you agree?
