There's something you don't see every day. Great job building a unique car to romp on. That thing looks like a ton of fun. I just wanted to throw out some questions, just asking because they weren't mentioned. For the handling concerns, what's the weight balance of the car? There was discussion about too much rear grip but nothing was said about increasing front grip. Has the pursuit of more front grip been exhausted? How would you describe the handling balance, dynamics, and transition between understeer/oversteer states? First, I'm no drifter. I've toyed with the concepts lightly for about 15 years and incorporate techniques into autocross and rallycross. I'm pretty comfortable behind the wheel of everything from a Civic to a Viper. My perception of a stable drift car is a stable grip car, as in the balance is near neutral, the suspension is sorted, and the dynamics control the chassis motions and inertia well. How well does the car drive at the edge of grip, particularly transitioning between grip and drift states? I ask because a lot of the trouble with handling is generated from fighting a poor setup, poor damping/inertia control, and wide gaps between moderate understeer to moderate oversteer states, etc.. As the car was described, it sounded like it understeers moderately meaning a lot of work is done by the driver to fight and overcome the wide gap from understeer up to neutral and then into oversteer, a lot of excess driver input just to literally throw the car into an unstable oversteer state. The car becomes heavily reliant on significant and precise driver inputs just to work properly. Even after it's in oversteer, it can be hard to maintain and really wants to snap hard back into a moderate understeer state which requires a drastic change in steering angle to hold and continue on a specific line. The abrupt reversion and any poor timing on driver input can promote accidents pretty easy. Then there's external factors like the rumble strips that were mentioned in the video that can knock the balance off abruptly if the suspension isn't tuned to accommodate. I tend to consider something tuned more towards neutral and with good dynamic control between grip and slip transitions is much easier to drive requiring a lot less input and corrections. You're not fighting this wide gap between heavy understeer and oversteer. Instead, you're hovering gingerly around a neutral state all the time: grip, at a low attack angle, and at a high attack angle the handling is actually almost always very near neutral and only requires small adjustments to tweak attack angle or resize your arc path. You add a touch more throttle and oversteer a wee bit more, take off a little throttle, and the rear tucks in. If you let off, it should neutral out and just hold a line. If you tap the brake, the handling and specifically the attack angle should remain relatively unaffected while tightening your arc. I'm not saying it's easy set up a car like this. It's incredibly hard to dial a car in so well, a lot of trial and error possibly over several seasons of racing, especially on an unknown/new chassis. Be careful about sway bars. A big rear sway is a good way to promote snap oversteer if there isn't enough damping control. It's generally safer to add rear spring instead because it forces you to also run more damping. You get the rear roll stiffness as well as improved inertia control. The choice depends on how you want the car to feel and behave. Rear sway and soft springs/dampers = tossable but twitchy. Rear springs/damping with a smaller rear bar = more control but less tossable You'll also generally get more off throttle oversteer with a stiff rear spring setup, and a perceptively mushier front end feel. You'll feel like you're driving the car from the back end more so than the front. Too much and you may find the rear end too damped to really toss back and forth. The front will feel too sluggish. It won't sling shot side to side like a softer damped and bigger swayed setup. It kind of depends on how rubber-bandy you want the dynamics to be. However before all of this, it's nice to get the car initially to something near a neutral state so you're not fighting that first. Then fine tune the spring/damper rate and sway bar sizing to get the dynamics you like while staying near neutral. If you have 2 or 3 way dampers, you can also fine tune dynamics of the car and continue to balance out the dynamic transitions and even steady state cornering (because it's still pretty dynamic there too).

+Xmvw2X Rushed response, but the owner described the car as an amazing grip car, and understeer and front end grip were never an issue. More that the car had such little weight to it, especially with none that weight being past the rear axle, there was no body roll/momentum to smooth out transitions between drifts. The steering geometry at the time wasn't helping as it had lots of ackerman at full lock.

I gotta know, I've been looking at swapping a b235r saab motor into a nissan s12 what did you use for a transmission and rear end. My goal is a drift car as well. Also it looked to me like you kept some of the steering components from the saab as well?
@nikopol79936 жыл бұрын
Not him, but a late model B2*4 (and thus B2*5) should bolt straight up to a T5 with the right bellhousing (there are two T5 patterns) - guys in the UK use Omega R28/R30 gearboxes and there's an E30 M3 with a B234 bolted up to a Getrag 260 in Serbia. Drop the B235, it has lighter built internals than the B2*4 series - so whilst it does rev higher, it can't take as much power. Get a B2*4 and remove the balance shafts for the absolute best Saab engine (without having to rebuild it).
