I've heard of slegd hammers going down hole,but you keep the hole covered with pipe is out of the hole,or slips in the table and that can't happen. @@MrJfrederici talking about the actual weight of a drill bit,and I have heard of sledgehammer's going down of open hole when the entire string out of hole while bite change with an uncovered rotary table. No such thing as a hammer weight back in the 70tys and 80tys when I was working Derricks. There were rock bits, button bits,and diamond bits.string weight is what's on the drill line,bit weight is weight your drilling with on the bit.I worked on some of the biggest rigs in south Texas,I've pulled back over 12 thousand feet of 5 in drill pipe in a few hours, I've worked on small triple and worked drill collars out of belt hanging on the side of the Derrick with no bull line. There were no hammer bits in my day,but have heard of dummies dropping hammers down the hole that that had to be fished out.
