14 years ago, Christina moved into a small house, which was the perfect size for her and her mother. But after Christina married Joe and they had a baby, it was clear that that modest three bedroom, one bathroom bungalow wasn’t big enough for their family. Christina and Joe signed a $200,000 contract with a contractor to put an extensive second floor addition on the original house. At the beginning, everything seemed fine, but slowly delays and additional expenses began to build. After a bitter battle over payments, the contractor put a lien on the house and walked off the job. When Mike visited the house he saw at first glance how bad the renovation had gone, he knew he had to do something.

The problem is that these shady contractors open and operate under company names they create. If someone wants to pursue them legally they close down the company and the next day they open another company with a different name. The really scary part of this episode is that the contractor is so blissfully ignorant that he thought he did an awesome job. I wonder how many other houses he’s destroyed?

Wouldn't really help, them going to prison isn't going to get the money or house back. Quite often these scammers have no money and blow it all on drugs or gambling habits. I mean some one who blows a hundred thousand dollars or more, they easily work multiple projects at once since they barely do any work. Despite stealing all that money they some how have nothing to show for it.

something i think my own dad wished his younger self taken into account when being gungho endless energy and serious 'know how its done' so can save cash doing stuff self , as the house i grew up in seriously where insulated and stuff like for example proper roof bricks but when you get trouble walking when older , a two floor house with a stair to the front door due to the solid foundation and cellar is simply not functional without 24/7 on site help or built in elevator :/ wich not is something you just tack on over an afternon at best you get a building permit for a 'tower' addition and hoppe you got a spot where you can make a door in all three floors without it getting awkward , like going through the kitchen or bathroom to get to second floor XD

The fact that at the end of the video the original contractor still had a lien on the home is mind boggling. You've got to be a real piece of work to still be confident that your crappy work was a "Mercedes".

I still don't understand the underlying justification for the lien. Hopefully there's not an equivalent in the US. If I install a $30K solar system, it could easily be argued that it's a $80,000 value since that's what I expect my power bills would have been over 20 years at 3.5% energy inflation, and up to $180,000 with the more likely accelerating 8% to 12% inflation. $55K without ANY inflation. As long as I pay the $30K construction bill, they'd have no basis for claiming more.

@@BradLarsen-nl2pc There are sadly a lot of similar laws in the US. Contractors can quite easily pad a bill then sue you for non payment if you refuse to pay. Their level of work is always vague as well as they can claim almost any reason for delays, weather, supplies being late etc. Despite all the delays mostly being their fault, some how the home owner is responsible for paying more if the project takes longer than expected.

FINALLY! Mostly concrete with glulams! And radiant heating! you can select the temp for each floor. That is how a house should be built. Structural metal studs... As a disabled senior who finds it difficult to get over the edge of the bathtub to have a shower, I’m surprised there is no wheelchair accessible shower in the home when it’s possible the husband may need to use a wheelchair sometime in the future.

14:50 - We had the same thing in our house with the finishing nails in the cabinets. We found out the day of our final walkthrough the day before closing. It was a foreclosure where the previous owner ripped out the kitchen when they were evicted, sat on the market for a few years and the bank (we are told) had a new kitchen installed. On the final walk-through one of the cabinets was on the floor face down in the middle of the kitchen. We were about to file a police report thinking it was vandalism, as the back door was clearly kicked in at some point but we didn't notice that on previous walk-throughs. Immediately we noticed ZERO holes in the wall where the cabinet was, just finishing brad nails, then determined that the bank kicked in the back door to gain access and not have to pay a locksmith but didn't repair the trim. We have the same cabinets today, the first job in the new house was getting those cabinets fixed to studs. A few months into ownership we heard a crash from the 2nd floor of the house, forgetting that an IDENTICAL cabinet was in the laundry room and suffered the same fate. I repaired the cabinet and got it attached to the studs as well. So far a decade in and no issues. The house will be falling down around the cabinets before those things budge now.

Nothing wrong with DIY IF you get someone who knows what you are supposed to do to inspect your work through the process. Build it to last even if the neighbourhood is going to be redeveloped in 20 years. In NZ, relocated homes is part of our modern culture.

This type of build excites me as I love anything that's a Green Home, Passive House, Net Zero House. And to see it on a main stream show in the U.S is great. It's big overseas and is just making big strides in America. It's standards are much higher than local coding standards here and really provides for lowering utility cost (or no utility cost) and more comfortable living environments that will last the test of time. Concreate is a great heat conductor and with heated floors you won't have to run your room heat as high to stay warm so it lowers your cost. This build is the equivalent to smashing an ant with a sledge hammer ladies and gentlemen.

ok i'm a big fan of mike Holmes because to me he shows everyone the quality of workmanship that needs to be put into our house because the crap they are selling these new house for for one are outrageous for the hassle some new homeowners have to go through like myself i bought a brand new townhouse and when they did the tile work they washed their buckets down my drain so i got a hold of the builder and told them flat out i know what they did because i've been in construction work all my life doing different work from rough plumbing to electric foundations i never claim to be a master at any job but i know the things to look for i,ve built everything you can think of on a house then i took what i learn and i would make it stronger my dad was teaching me to lay brick walls from the time i was 7 or 8 years old i laid some retain walls that are 40 plus years old with him that are still up to this day and doing their job because like mike i'll take that extra time needed to make sure its done right the first time

The new house looks amazing - like a million dollar home, maybe more at current prices. Solidly built, as is more commonly seen in Germany. I wonder how many square meters in size? To me it looks way bigger than what a family of 3 or 4 would normally build for themselves. I also wonder about long term maintenance costs for the complex systems in the house. I hope they are still able to enjoy it today, 16 years later, after all they had been through. A follow up would be really interesting!

The maintenance would be nil...Look at the systems Mike had built into it...They're all about 99% maintenance free...

@@ICU2B4UDO admittedly these are high quality products that would function reliably for a long time. Nevertheless there is complexity in each system which certainly would have needed some maintenance within the last 16 years. The lead-acid solar batteries last less than 10 years, the green roof needs regular upkeep. A TSSA inspector will visit your elevator once every one to three years and may require some repairs or maintenance. A rainwater catchment system requires regular cleaning and may require filter changes and pump maintenance. For the core features such as concrete walls, metal roofing etc, I agree that they would be 99% maintenance free.

The manner in which the "builder" submitted his lien and provided statements of his increasing the value, should make him eligible for Fraud Charges even without the Home Owners even needing to file.

Everyone did an outstanding job I can't even find a word for it it was beyond outstanding!!! And to answer your question Mike yes I do know what it's like to be out of your house for 3 years.. I'm actually homeless because of my ignorant family and I've been on the streets now for 4 years 😔.. I haven't slept in a bed for years... Just in my sleeping bag my backpack is my pillow and I'm laying on the hard ground or concrete wherever I happen to be...

I would imagine when the company that put the lien on the house has seen this episode. They will drop the lawsuit and file bankruptcy. They would end up paying for the couples' attorney's fees as well as what it cost to fix. They could easily find themselves owning a million dollars.,..

Really sad thing is it's highly unlikely this is the first house the guy ever built if the home owners felt safe using his services. So there are probably dozens if not more people out there living in a house this contractor built...

Wow! I am stunned at how bad this was. You and your team are a total blessing to this family. Really hoping they take the original contractor for all the cost they spent plus what it would have cost for your work. And praying the contractor and inspector lose their licenses.

Mr Holmes You are a Hero. I've been watching your videos on and off for years. I live in Minnesota USA and 2 years ago the goverment weatherization program came in to "weatherize" my home. The exterior window caulking is old hard and cracking i asked that they recaulk, they wanted to pull my interior trim and stuff insulation in instead so I refused I told them i want to keep it out not trap it in the wall. They installed a new vent cap for my kitchen exhaust which now doesnt pull 1/2 as much as it used to and causes an icepack all around it in the winter, they installed a "upgraded" bath fan ran it through my wall above my bedroom window with a plastic dryer bent cap, it is intended to run very slow all the time, it freezes shut in the winter. They cut out one of 2 of my existing wooden attic vents made it larger and then stuck the $8 off the shelf "shed quality" tin vent with 6 screws on top of my siding and filled the gaps with caulk. They removed my exterior metal dryer vent and replaced it with plastic that was to big so it is bowed and flexed to fit the spot. They spray foamed my sill no barrier, some spots are less than a 1/2" thick and some slumped before curing leaving gaps. They removed my existing door sweeps to replace the new ones are already shot. They removed/replaced my new smoke detector, all 3 of the ones they installed faulted out within the first 8 months. I called the program director he brought his inspector with and bullshitted their way through dumbed down justification of the jobs done. I asked them whos paying to repair what theyve done, Ive never heard back from them.

Even a Mercedes can be a right-off. Can't believe a 'friend of the family' would do this to people who could be great referrals for future clients. Not only a bad builder, but a bad businessman. And definitely NOT a friend. I love that Mike mucks in and works with his men and the contractors. No sitting around simply supervising for him. I sure hope they really like it. They've gone from beloved bungalow, through disaster, to modern-strosity. Love the eco stuff, but couldn't it all be done in a more traditional house like they were originally wanting? As for the OG contractor - I can't believe that there is a legal system in the world that can potentially profit the wrong-doer, when there is soooooo much evidence. These people need for him to be made to pay back what he's already been paid, plus pay for the new house.
