I have viewed many drill doctor tutorials and yours is the only one that correct from start to finish.. Congrats. Some men do read the instructions. Regards, Bruce

Excellent and much better than the 'official' vids. Thanks for making and posting. I've just got a 750x and the proper vid doesn't show the process as well as you have.

This is a great little machine that quickly pays for itself if you dig a lot of holes in metal. I have broken soooo many bits, especially the small diameter ones I use for pilot holes. They don't give these bits away, so sharpening your own & even splitting them to do pilot holes is a great time & money saver. This machine's value far exceeds its cost.

I purchased the DD750 after trying other methods. Only consist issue is the initial positioning and alignment of small drill bits in the chuck. It is sometimes difficult to position the bit where the pointed "arms" fit into the flutes, and the chuck is a bit large for small e.g. 1/8" bits. Thanks for the tip on reversing a used bit.

When you split your point just do it gradually, letting the bit cool off between touches of the grinding wheel. You can just visualize how hot that poor little bit was getting when you were splitting it, and what that did to the temper of it. Blue bits are ruined bits.
@grntitan1 Жыл бұрын
Unless you surpass the tempering temperature of the HSS, it shouldn’t change the temper. The bluing temperature of steel starts at under 600° F. Tempering of most HSS is well into the 900°-1000° F range. You would need to exceed that temperature. All that being said, I agree it’s better to keep the temps down. A little frequent water quench to keep the metal cool is an easy solution.
@stearman456 Жыл бұрын
I’ve heated up a bit like that and blued it (intentionally) to see what it did and I found it wouldn’t hold an edge afterwards. Now, in all fairness, it wasn’t an expensive bit but it did seem to screw it up. @@grntitan1

I noticed that you held the bit in for an extended amount of time. Like on a standard grinding wheel, here too it can overheat and tempering the metal too much.

and the other point on the slit point, gradually insert not to the point your forcing it to cut a slit point. You will kill the motor
@stearman4562 жыл бұрын
You are also getting the bit hot which reduces it's temper, which means it gets dull faster. Just use gentle on and off pressure and give the bit a moment to cool off between grinds.

I’ve had one of these before, and now I’m waiting for Amazon to get me this model with tomorrow’s deliveries. Just a note for your viewers, maybe yourself, good tool but way underpowered. I could hear the motor really bog down in your video. The user must be aware of this and assert some patience into the process. Less is more. The tool will last longer and so will the wheel if you back off the forward pressure during use and as they say…let the tool do the work. Really heard it bob down when you were splitting the point on the wheel edge. You’ll get a better grind and a sharper edge with less pressure. Your wheel will last longer and so will the motor!

You sir make some excellent points. I was cringing when he attempted to rotate the earth when tightening it in the _Alignment Port_ and was wondering how long his tool lasted before the plastic port broke. I see Drill Doctor have replacements available on their web-store.

Well here was my results upon receiving my machine and following the manufacturers instructions to the letter and experimenting with suggested methods as described in numerous videos including this one, I felt so compelled to comment on. These things are garbage!! I can only-surmise perhaps, those making such videos were somehow compensated for their opinions or so called “expertise”. It’s in a box and on its way back to Amazon, even as I type this reply. GARBAGE! ….Or I got one that slipped through the quality control department. It wasn’t damaged upon arrival and there were no signs of abuse in transit. I’m a retired UPS GUY, You could consider me an “Expert” in knowing the signs of package abuse. I tried grinding at 118 and 135 degrees with and without splitting the points. Every single time, and not abusing the under-powered motor, I would get a reverse grind, where the trailing, heel edge, of the grind was higher than the leading, cutting edge, of the drill bits I sampled. My test bits were then tried in a doug fir 2x4 scrap. Results crap. Would only “dent” the test piece until MUCH pressure was applied to initiate a hole. All the while, split or not, the “sharpened” drill bits would wander the face of the 2x4, like a dog looking for a good spot to dig a hole. I even went so far as to try sharpening brand new, never used bits, just in case it was a user error issue, only to destroy those bits in the process, ending up in the same “reverse grind”. In case you’re wondering…Nope, not some HF Tools “Shit Bits” my test bits were all DeWalt brand and a known quality bit. The test sharpening’s all began with only mildly dull bits where none of the bits had been overheated or broken or even so much as chipped along the cutting edge. I verified all of the bits conditions in the before and after with squares, bit gauges, contour standards, and a 10 power lighted optical grade glass shop magnifying glass. I am not out to destroy the product brand name nor was I testing for a major trade article or website. I did not photograph or video record the before and after effects. I sought only to document the results for myself with the net intention, that I’d be a satisfied customer who ended up with a simpler and cost effective way to sharpen my bits with a repeatable degree of satisfactory results. NOPE! I’m back to the old grinding wheel and my old methods. As for my skills doing manual grinding…I can restore a drill bits back to better than factory grinds even after its been shattered or broken in half or cooked to oblivion if it’s been used to punch a hole in some stainless steel. These are my opinions…take them for what they are worth to you. Thanks for the reply.

Very informative, thank you. Hope you include sharpening 135* bit using the guide port. A lot of YT video tutorial was wrong aligning the 135* bits on the 118* slots on the alignment port. I heard this info only came out late 2018 and on DD sold on 2019 stocks. Like me, I will rather watch YT instruction videos than read the manual... "For standard 135° drill bits, align 1-notch to the right (-) of the 118° slot" . Stated under page 18, link of the manual below. www.drilldoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/DD500X_and_DD750X_User_Guide.pdf
