Why do we transport steel coils standing upright?

Explaining why steel coils are transported standing upright, when it would seem much safer to lay them down flat on their side.

Years ago I came across a semi in Iowa that this happened to. The driver did not survive. I remember the huge blood stain on the road.

Only problem with this statement is that it won't really stop anything. Maybe slow it down but that much mass and inertia, a little bit of aluminum ain't doing much of shit. No such thing as too much securement.

@@automation7295 In Germany, you will get a huge fine for coils transporting in this way. If german BAG checks that the coils are not sufficiently secured you will get a fine and you will have to put the load on a coilmulde trailer. Otherwise, you will be not allowed to continue driving.
