A hardy hole is incredibly useful for a blacksmith, because it allows them(us?) to fit tools inside the hole and keep that tool as steady as the anvil itself. I am drilling the holes(1/8" & 5/8") with the drill press. Next part will be all about filling the hardy hole down to a square-ish shape. Enjoy!

Great idea, cutting smaller holes to get a square. Could even drill more holes to form a dotted line. Might be easier to cut away the web of the rail underneath prior to drilling.

May I gently suggest you purchase a center punch to spot the location of holes you wish to drill, and that you replace the use of lubricating (3-In-1) oil with cutting oil. You can purchase the cutting oil, such as Oatey Dark Thread Cutting Oil, in Lowes, Menards, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. in the plumbing section. It is much better than using lubricating oil, and is even less expensive!

I use Oatey thread oil for drilling and even for cutting stainless steel with a hole saw. Of course I adjust the speed of the drill press to the required cutting speed for each size. Works great.

You should get a brush for debris removal along with a little dust pan like they have in cars.

Very impressive Sir. I'm attempting my own anvil and was wondering how in the world I was going to drill a square hole. Thanks for sharing!!! ---Chris

Carolina Chris Outdoors - Another alternative is to drill a larger round hole, drop in a piece of square tubing and then weld it in place. Although this method seems to be just as workable.

If you hadn't drilled the smaller holes all the way through, you could have filled them with oil and it it would have self-lubricated the larger bit during drilling. Thanks for sharing!

What kind of drill bit would I use to drill a hole in one of these rails? I have a customer that wants me to connect two lengths for his boat launch.

So I just want to drill holes in my track to add a d-ring so I can hook a chain to it and drag my yard. Could this be done without a drill press? What kind of drill bits should I use?

Hello. Can you please let me know which 1/8" bit did you use? I bought a cobalt one to try to make a through hole in the middle section of the anvil, but it just did a little to the steel. Thank you,

Here's what I would to do, this; i'd make the hole with the biggest bit in my set, and then using a tiger-torch as my heat-source, forge that hole to a square shape using a railroad spike a makeshift drift punch. just saying Edit: There’s a company online that carries steel sleeves that have square holes down the core! You could drill a round hole and then weld one of these into it
