So you not only want to retreat at the same speed as the opponent's advance, you want to deceptively look like a weaker structure in order to disable the attacker's hand. Is there anything else I might be missing viewing this?

That's the general idea, though in Jianfa, we would look at the action more as following and sticking to the movement, not retreating. In a sense, one is advancing (cutting with the blade), as the side duifang is cutting towards swings out of distance.
