I think Drinker and Mauler are misinterpreting the reason for River's Cockney accent. She's not trying to pass herself off as one, she's imitating Badger's accent to unsettle him (listen to what she says). She's obviously hinting that she knows things about him that he'd rather were kept secret. He gets unsettled because he's wondering how the hell does she know this about him.
@thesouthernwake4 ай бұрын
Never occurred to me...definitely will watch again - I like this take. She's a good enough actress; it is a little odd that her accent is so over the top that it wouldn't be better done if that was the intention.
@GodotIsWaiting4U4 ай бұрын
My impression was that she wasn’t even doing it deliberately - she’s working from information from Badger’s mind, it’s going to be filtered through him and how he thinks, and his accent will bleed into that.

Just a few of the best lines in TV that was, or ever will be: Zoe: Planet’s coming up a might fast. Wash: That’s just because I’m going down too quick. Likely crash and kill us all. Zoe: Well when that happens let me know. Kaylee: Say, look at the fluffy one! Zoe: Too much foofarah. If I’m gonna wear a dress I want something with some slink. Wash: You want a slinky dress? I can buy you a slinky dress. Captain, can I have money for a slinky dress? Jayne: I’ll chip in. Zoe: I can hurt you. Kaylee: Is that him? Mal: That’s the buffet table. Kaylee: But how can we be sure? Unless we question it. Mal: Fine. Don’t make yourself sick.

Mauler, I remember listening to the commentary on all the Firefly dvds back in the day, and this episode was commented on by Morena Baccara (Inara), the costume designer for the show/this episode and the writer of this episode. One of the more interesting things the writer said is actually with regards to the "diamonds" joke. Initially the writer had Malcolm say "Diamonds or Testicles?" but it was actually Joss Whedon who said that "No, you've gone past the joke. It's better to just have a look and he catches himself". I find it super interesting and maybe one of the reasons that Marvel has been so bad is everyone thinks doing "Whedon" speak is so easy, but there are surprising subtleties that no one notices if you aren't paying attention.
@Markyparky564 ай бұрын
Agree! Say more with less. Implication is just as important as explanation, moreso even, since it gets into the subtext of what is being said. It's so easy to go over the top with dialogue and forget that communication has layers. Surface-level dialogue is noticeable and gets dull and samey fast.

The comtemporary complaints about the visuals being contradictory is that it works for a naval yard. If these were Alliance ships then yeah, I would expect there to be some continuity in the designs. Like how American destroyers, cruisers, and super air craft carriers all look alike. That scene isn't at a navy yard though. It's at the Buc-ee's parking lot. Think about what mix of makes, models, and years you sed there. My old Jeep Cherokee is parked next to a C9 Corvette which is parked next to a late model Honda Odysee which is parked next to a classic Ford Galaxy. This scene captures that idea very well.

Mauler's theorized story somewhere after the 7:00 mark, about the Serenity crew getting a big payoff was actually the subject of a comic book, written by Whedon, which spent a lot of time exploring each crew member's plan on how they will spend the money they get from selling the McGuffin they have obtained. Simon, I think, is in a top flight medical facility, Jayne is the commander of his own warship that even Alliance commanders respect and get out of his way, with a crew of sexy babes, Zoe & Wash are settling down with a kid, and so on. At the end of the story, the mission goes bad, and they end up having to give up the valuable cargo, and lose the windfall, and of course, go back to scrapping and struggling, except Inara confronts Mal alone, accusing him of actually sabotaging the mission and deliberately losing their money. Either Mal admits it, or she sees through his denial, and eventually realizes that he did it, because getting rich would break up the crew, as each went off to pursue their dreams, of being a warlord or raising a family or starting a practice. Basically, Mal threw away a fortune to keep his "family" together.

The show never got a chance to delve into it, but I always got the feeling that Mal also disliked the companions due to their possible connection to the Alliance. I don't know if it is (in any way) Canon (or just my "head-canon"), but I always interpreted "Companions as a mix of French Courtesans & Asian Geishas. (maybe with a SPRINKLE of Dune's Bene Gesserit.) They are not JUST "s3x workers" nor even just "high class escorts" nor ONLY about the "bedroom action". My understanding is that Geisha's were HIGHLY educated & trained in a variety of things. (Dance, Calligraphy, Poetry, etc.) And like Courtesans and Geishas, they often appear in "royal court" (i.e. with men of power), so, while they have no DIRECT power, they have good enough relations with those in power that they are viewed as pretty HIGH up the social ladder. Maybe I am wrong. I don't know. But I love that this episode did do a bit of universe building by revealing more about "companions".
@kgjung23104 ай бұрын
I see them as a combination of escort, courtesan, therapist, psychiatrist, artisan, and great conversationalist. There is a reason why their clients tend to be the very rich and powerful and are trained to meet those expectations.
@MaryRohwer4 ай бұрын
I agree. I looked up geishas and courtesans on the internet, because I was having trouble understanding how she could be both respected and disrespected at the same time: In the first episode, you see how Shepherd is disturbed at first by her presence for being a prostitute, but in the second episode he sends her to Mal and Zoe as someone who is respected. That she is a courtesan makes sense. She's respected for her education in high society, respected as an ambassador, but is looked down on for her lifestyle. It's similar to Atherton: he's envied for having a beautiful, poised and well-spoken lady on his arm, disrespected because he didn't win her, but rather, paid for her.
@dargron76144 ай бұрын
I'd say you are spot on. Geisha's were highly educated so that they could carry on intelligent conversations on any topic that might come up. Inara doesn't know about swordplay because she has experience as a fencer, or because she is from high society, but because it is a topic of interest to many of her clientele so she has been schooled enough in the principles to be able to engage in conversation about it (the same way Kaylee had all the men enthralled by being able to engage with them talking about engines). I suspect there is also a lot more than just a sprinkle of Bene Gesserit. I feel like we've barely seen the tip of the iceberg. This is a highly organised operation that has their people literally in bed with some of the most powerful and influential people in the verse. Their people are highly trained in suggestion and manipulation, and we later get a glimpse of just how potent their skillsets can be when used for other means. There's no way Whedon didn't have bigger plans for the potential of this organisation down the line.
@cameronjames34994 ай бұрын
I'd say the Courtesan/Geisha combo is very true; though I'd perhaps also throw in a little 5% hint of Bene Gesserit as well. Again it can only be a suspicion because of the short run-time, but if they'd had a few more seasons to develop things it's definitely the sort of sub-plot I could see cropping up. Especially since the movie shows various factions have no issue with trying to shape humanity as they see fit (and definitely ripe for drama if some old mentor of Inara's had some info about the shenanigans that were going on with River).
@kgjung23104 ай бұрын
@@MaryRohwer Thing is, in this world, she isn't a prostitute. A prostitute is simply a sex worker. Nothing more. Companions are highly trained in various arts and highly educated in specific temples/facilities. It's part of the reason why Mal called Inara a highly educated woman and figured she had some training in sword fighting (which she did). If I remember correctly, It is considered a prestigious occupation that opens doors in civilized societies because it's so highly regarded. Some women/girls of high born families aspire to be companions.

I was just going to say about how great Summer Glau's physical performance was but this is such a fantastic cast all around. This is your reminder that no fate is too awful for anyone who makes Kaylee sad. Inara's advice to Mal on the use of a sword is awful by the way. They have a saber and a smallsword. You go from the wrist, not the elbow.

45:43 NCIS Gibbs doesn't have sexual tension with the main cast, it is left to the other characters leading up to Kate's death in Season 2.

8:20 a good arch would have been them stranded on a planet for 2 or 3 episodes. They could effect repairs if they had money but food and booze drain all their money. How do they survive in a port for days at a time keeping River hidden while she wants to explore.

It's OK Drinker, we Americans often feel the exact same way when a British actor is doing a supposed American accent.

I'm from the UK and both sides of Atlantic have a wide variety of accents. People said how good Hugh Laurie's accent was for House, but I thought it didn't sound like any American accent I'd heard from TV or movie, to me it sounded like a parody of one.

Usually, I think English actors do fine with American accents. The only one which really stood out to me was in Sherlock where Mary Watson tried a New Jersey accent. I loved Mary Watson's character in that series, but the Jersey accent was rough.

Shindig is one of the better episodes. Sure, the bad guy is a ridiculous caricature, because Whedon's bad guys were ridiculous in many cases. But otherwise, fun episode.

fun fact, there is a comic story exactly about what Mauler describes, they get their hands on big money and the story is about what they do with it

I always thought of Inara as a geisha, or sorts: well-versed in just about everything a client might be interested, including swordplay.

I remember the cows in the hold was the first scene i ever saw. I admit i thought sci fi western was silly, why would they have cows on a spaceship. All makes sense in hindsight and it is still one of my alltime favorites once i gave it a chance.

Also guys, I have requested this until I am blue in the face, could someone, anyone please react to "Enemy Mine" from 1985. The makeup is phenomenal and the message is so universal. Please drinker no "Message" jokes ok. Seriously I follow dozens of reactors and they only do what's being watched. This film deserves a chance so please. I ask nicely. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
