Things are going from bad to worse for Disney, with the recent revelation that they're looking to sell off ESPN, ABC and FX to bring in some badly needed cash. But could they end up getting bought by Apple or Amazon?

They were collapsing before they bought everything under the sun. I went to Disney World with my kids last year after having been there with my wife like 10 years ago. There’s a number of companies now that are being affected by the people who are boycotting their products. It shows that we do have power as people. People just need to choose to not support these companies, and no matter how much money they have, they’ll begin to crumble; every business, no matter the size, depends on people. Also, we can only hope Disney will sell off Lucas Film and Marvel.

I disagree entirely. Sometimes larger companies can truly bring that efficiency of scale to bear and use it to provide better products and service to everyone. Old Ma Bell was living their goal to provide service to every man, woman, and child. Breaking it up resulted in small, regional monopolies like Comcast which everyone despises. And who really misses McDonald Douglass after it was bought out by Boeing? Usually when Boeing buys something I actually get hopeful that something new and exciting will get broader scale. Now it's entirely true that companies can - and often do - lose their vision of their purpose after large mergers. It's entirely true that when companies become large they very often start to think that they are 'too big to fail'. In these cases, yes, death probably can and should follow. Mergers CAN destroy a company. They even OFTEN destroy a company. But it's certainly not the case that they MUST destroy a company.

Drinker, I haven't yet had time to watch/listen to the whole podcast but here's something very relevant I stumbled upon when researching a totally different industry situation (yachting industry)(I posted this under your full length podcast too): I noted this following information: In 2016, Wang Jianlin launched a direct competition with Disney by declaring that *_he wants to make sure Shanghai Disneyland Park doesn't make any money in China_* by launching over a dozen competing amusement parks. Below is more info on the company and those involved, but suffice to say that the company is owned by top people in the CCP/PLA including Xi Jinping through his family, is one of the biggest entertainment and film industry companies in the world, and they specifically mentioned their intent to destroy Disney...that should be significant! If they wanted to destroy Disney's theme parks they probably wanted to destroy Disney's other business interests too! So the subject matter I wanted to bring to your attention is Wanda Group, which has packaged its film industry holdings into Wanda Film Holdings. Wanda Film Holdings is the highest revenue-generating film production company in the world, or at least was still a few years ago. Please read about Wanda Group's film holdings in detail from other sources which you'll surely find easily. Even the Wikipedia entry for Wanda Group has a lot of their film industry ownership and partnerships listed. Some companies and partnerships include: ownership of AMC Theatres (though apparently due to Covid hurting their business and CCP wanting all Chinese companies to reduce their foreign investments they've since lost the controlling majority?), Legendary Entertainment, Propaganda GEM and Hoolai Games, 20% of Mtime, a major partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment in which Wanda invests in selected projects. Wanda announced that they were launching some nefarious sounding internet technology company together with Tencent and Gaopeng, the purpose of which was to build a "new consumption model"'. Dalian Wanda Group was(/is?) the largest film exhibitor in China (I believe the "Dalian" part of that is just what they add to the name Wanda Group in China due to Dalian being where the company was founded). Wanda Group's majority owner and chairman is Wang Jianlin. Its minority shareholders include Xi Jinping's family and family members of other highest members of the CCP. At the age of 15, Wang started his 17-year service with the People's Liberation Army, initially as a border guard before rising to become a regimental commander. In 1976, he joined the Communist Party of China. After 17 years in the army, in 1986 Wang started working as the office administrator for the Xigang District in the city of Dalian. He served as deputy to the CCP's 17th National Congress. Wang is a delegate to the Chinese National People's Congress. He was twice named CCTV's "Economic Person of the Year". He is the vice chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and has been a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference since 2008. He is vice chair of the China Charity Confederation; vice chair of the China Folk Chamber of Commerce; vice chair of the China Enterprise Confederation and the China Enterprise Directors Association; vice chair of the China General Chamber of Commerce.

I don't know enough details to form a full picture of the competitive situation and what exactly has been going on. What I can do is look at previous pitfalls such American companies have fallen into: -American companies tend to blindly take foreign investments and partnerships, totally naively not even thinking that they might have some ulterior motives and a long-term strategy play that is NOT in the best interest of their company. They just see the money and think "this'll make me look good as CEO in front of the investors". -I know for a fact that it's STANDARD PRACTICE for PLA (who is always involved in all Chinese companies operating internationally) to demand all Western companies to employ some of their people (they don't tell anyone they're actually PLA agents, but it's usually quite obvious). This applies even to Western companies above a certain size doing business with Chinese companies, and certainly applies to all companies setting up any operations in China as well as those accepting major Chinese investment. What many companies don't know is you can just refuse...it won't be easy but in the end they can't do much about it (except in the cases of Western companies operating on Chinese soil). So they have Western companies take in these Chinese 'employees', who then just conduct espionage. It's as simple as that. Sometimes they might not actually need to do espionage if they've already gotten access to all of your IP, then they just choose some family members or sons of important people be chosen instead, just for the paycheque and station abroad. I'm guessing Disney had dozens of such Chinese operatives employed, mandated through their investment deals and also just through ordinary PLA infiltration (easy as hell since they've got a pipeline going on through US universities and the diversity hire system makes it even easier). And for sure they had access to everything, meaning Disney had no chance to gain any strategic advantages and for sure they were sitting ducks to any schemes Chinese companies or the PLA decided to play on them. -American companies tend to not have a clue about geopolitics and strangely don't even really care, as if anything that happens abroad is a big bonus but if it all falls apart who cares as no-one at home will see that happen in detail. They'll see the Chinese market as something they want to get into because they see dollar signs in their eyes, but then they have no clue about what they're getting into, and when the Chinese government indirectly through some "private Chinese companies" or even directly just swats them down like flies and just craters everything they built in China they don't know what to do and just don't even want to believe that happened. In my experience they just don't mention it, as if that write-off is no big deal, or the CEO just leaves the company and continues in another company as if nothing ever happened. They don't even urge the politicians, the foreign ministry to address the clear entrapment and unfair competition or react to it in their foreign policy or policies towards Chinese activities in their country for some reason! Sort of like NPC drones who take no responsibility for what happens to the country or the company long-term, all they care about is the constant nice little bribes the Chinese pay them personally or the nice investments from China which bump their company's value somewhat and they get bonuses & get to cash in some sweet stock options. Usually when I've seen eg. European companies battle countries like South Korea about unfair market influencing with subsidies in some industries they've always made their foreign and trade ministries take care of most of the battling...they don't just lay down and take it without fighting against such unfair geopolitical stuff and trade battles! (Americans shouldn't be offended, similar things happen in Europe, just with a slightly different structure and with more differing situations)

Disney refused to release this movie (ironic cause many Disney emplyees been caught up in child sex trafficking rings and molested kids and they shelved a movie bringing awarness to that exact thing? Coincidence? I dont think so 🤔) and tried to keep it from being seen. Instead of helping bring awarness to the most evil thing happening to KIDS which is thier main customer if they don't remember... I never cared much for Marvel. I watched what Disney did to MCU with a sad curiosity similar to that of a medician observing an unusually large cancer growth slowly overtaking its host and eventuallly killing him. But I utterly hate them for what they did to "Star Wars". No words known to men can describe how much I hate them for that. The moment I saw the teaser of "The Force Awakens", I knew exactly what kind of "content" they were going to produce... Ultimately there is only one answer to this whole crisis: a complete renouncing by the public opinion of any claim of these corporations to any kind of canon, legendarium or cinematic universe. To treat this content of theirs, as an extreme example of a bad "fanfiction", only corporatized. They may own the legal monopoly to publish under a trademark and to declare what's "official" - but they do not own the cultural monuments.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie as of writing has made $1350 million on a budget of $100 million. There was no Ess Jay Dubya content at all, and it made 10x. I was bit miffed at Luigi being seemingly cowardly at the beginning, but STFU when he and his brother rose to the occasion. The brothers kicked way more ass together than any single character alone. Mario was old school Luke Skywalker. Princess Peach was a mix of Han and Obi but younger. Luigi was Hobby who didn't get merced. Brilliant over all but the Donkey Kong part of the movie seemed antisemitik (sic) as it was over the top. It was cliché kvetching and stereotypes the whole time.

Pandemic really was the be all - end all for Disney. They made people addicted to shows, series and shorts. Cinema is dying right now thanks to streaming services, and now the only chance anything seems to get notoriety is by becoming a meme like Barbie. Even their good movies like Guardians 3 failed to break even due to negative customer experience. They bought two giants of the movie industry, Lucasfilms and Marvel, somehow sinking both's reputation in just a couple of years. Their cheap and manipulative business practices, quite like their fanbaiting has not worked in a long time. In a world where everyone hates them and what they done to beloved franchises, one must wonder: how long does Disney has left to turn it around?

There's no new Renaissance nor people capable of it, Lucasfilm is a corpse that can't be paraded around the streets anymore, Fox is trying to keep itself alive, the MCU is in its last legs, the parks have become money sinks, the fans and the common audience is leaving their ship, and Pixar isn't the same without Lasseter. They'd probably sell themselves to Blackrock.
