The most annoying thing about the cortosis is that it’s been used well before in Star Wars. There’s a comic (pre Disney, go figure) where a bunch of Jedi survivors set a trap for Vader in a spice mine in Kessel, by leaking that obi wan was hiding there. One of the Jedi masters, Shadday Potkin had a cortosis blade, and used it to deactivate Vader’s blade. While she was gloating, Vaders response was to go “cortosis, that’s annoying, and very rare. Kind of you to bring one to me” Snaps her neck, and uses the blade against the other Jedi. Because he’s Vader. Gimmicks don’t work on him for long. Also we have a “badass angry female padawan” who rushes Vader at the start. She lives approximately 3 seconds. Incidentally, that’s what I wanted the Kenobi series to be. Vader rampaging through the galaxy like a hurricane killing Jedi and Inquisitors and Rebels alike, trying to find where Kenobi is. Prime Vader “you have failed me inquisitor.” All of that. Obi-Wan on the other hand is trying his hardest to stay hidden, because he has a more important job to do than settle a grudge match with Anakin. He’s looking after Luke.
@chaosgyro4 ай бұрын
That wouldn't have ever worked because the Vader = Anakin retcon has the glaring plot hole of Kenobi and Skywalker living on Anakin's homeworld using their real names. 🤦♂️

Yes, it was actually the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that did me in. It was so disappointing. They could’ve done so much with it. They wasted an opportunity by having Hayden and Ewen get back into it close to the shape as they were in for revenge of the Sith Instead they wasted it by telling us stories about Reva and Leia and Leah is definitely one of my lifetime favorites. I mean, I’m an OG girl. I don’t remember my first time seeing any of the movies but I do always remember playing Leah and being Leia they made me resent Leia, she just didn’t belong there. This was Luke’s story so the bait and switch to I don’t know to try to draw girls or make girls happy. no I was here to see the men that’s what they advertised plus, I messed up by reading some of the EU stuff about Kenobi and so I expected better stories. I know I’m done but gotta keep in mind. I love Mando one and two and this was coming right off Mando one and two. Of course they ruined Mando three and was it for me My most recent video focuses on the treatment of male fans. My comments have several from life long female fans like myself that are done too.

Cortosis was very well handled and very well established by a talented writer, Timothy Zahn, that made some of the best Star Wars novels. He also had creatures named ysalamir that created these.... bubbles... of dead space where the Force could not be felt or manipulated. All discovered on a single world where there were predator species that literally hunted via the Force. The Thrawn trilogy is fantastic. This use of cortosis in Acolyte is just another example of Disney taking good ideas of better men and bastardizing them just like they did with Grand Admiral Thrawn himself.
@Amoschp5244 ай бұрын
Correct, in the EU the Cortosis ore had severe downsides to being used as armor, you could not headbutt with a helmet of it like the Acolyte showed, Disney has made it on par with Beskar which is stupid.

@MN-jw7mm4 ай бұрын
They were both really bad and a better writer wouldn't have needed them. Cortosis, Beskar, Ysalamari, Phrik, none of them should be in big-budget Star Wars projects. For the record, Force Storms that can destroy entire fleets and that stupid little Ghost Navy that Luke Skywalker created were also bad. George Lucas knew about all of these before creating the PT, and he had the rightful sense not to introduce any of them. Zahn wrote himself into a corner by making Force users more powerful than GL intended, so he needed something to "balance" out his own mistake. When Star Wars was first bought by Disney and they announced they were canning the EU, I thought the silver-lining was that they wouldn't be beholden to a Star Wars universe that had ridiculous shit like the aforementioned, but instead of cherry-picking the good stuff, they're cherry-picking the lamest elements of the EU.
@Amoschp5244 ай бұрын
@@MN-jw7mm Zahn's Cortosis was a pretty balance for a unique material that was more of a curiosity that expanded the world than the anti jedi armor that Disney made it. How did Zhan make the Jedi more powerful than Lucas intended? The Trilogy and Duology made the Jedi more grounded and usually power down the Jedi. Did the EU have Dragonball type power level spikes for the Force, yes but it wasn't Zhan. Totally agree they are cherry picking the worst parts of the EU, that is why I can't watch most of it anymore because all I see is where the plagiarized from the EU and somehow made poor source material worse.

If the Prequels have taught me anything it is that people will defend Star Wars so long as it has even the slightest tinge of sweetness, they only truly hate it when there is absolutely nothing. The Mandalorian also proved that, so many episodes were pointless filler or mediocre at best, but because it wasn't absolutely horrible people were gobbling it up. Episode 5 was a lot more like Star Wars then every other episode of The Acolyte, but to say it was "Star Wars" is like saying a pile of shit is ice cream because it actually once was ice cream. I can't quite blame the fans though, I think we've been dying for good Star Wars media for far too long now.

Agree with Mauler, and I've commented this many times. The fight between Luke and Vader in Empire is by FAR the best sabre fight in Star Wars because of what it SAYS in the scenes. At first Vader is basically submissive, he doesn't want to kill Luke, he wants to capture him and return him to the Emperor. That's WHY he tests the Carbonite on Han! He's even fighting one handed. He has zero respect for Luke's abilities. It's only when Luke gets a hit on him that he gets angry and starts using 2 hands, and he's over it. Even though Luke's doing his best, Vader unleashes his anger and cuts his arm off. Only THEN does he get control and once again try to convert Luke, eventually revealing that he's his father. Which by the way, NOBODY believed in 1980. Everyone thought it was just a ruse to trick Luke. Then we had to wait 3 years until Jedi to know it was true. THIS is how you do sword/sabre fights in movies. You tell a STORY.

Agree with everything you said.... EXCEPT I still like the duel in Jedi the best. At that point we've seen Luke complete his character arc and it's really the second and third most powerful force users in the Galaxy dueling it out in front of the most powerful. Vader had to fight harder than in Empire, but overall he had the upper hand because of Luke's compassion for him that caused him to hold back and lower his guard, but then Vander yucked it up by threatening Leia. It was only then that Luke lost control and let his rage make him strong enough to beat Vader down with sheer violence.... and then at the last second before chopping his head off like he did in Dagobah swamp (dooming himself in the process to the Dark Side) he sees his wounded father, robotic hand severed just like his own was in Empire and he realized... "I'm becoming him!" Only then does Luke cast away his light saber and face the Emperor with complete vulnerability Then the capstone is when Vader, seeing his son dying at the Emperor's hands before his eyes, flips the tables on the Emperor and kills him (forever, Palpatine never "somehow" returned... that movie does not exist), sacrificing himself in the process. Soooooo many high stakes in that last duel and the climax. Father and Son dueling for the fate of the universe and themselves. The Light side triumphs over the Dark. Good wins. Evil is vanquished at a high cost.... YAY!!!! It's only later when you think over the timeline that the duel didn't matter much.... Han's team deactivated the shield and the rebels blew up the Death Star anyway. Everyone on there: Luke, Vader, Emperor.... they would've gone ka-blooey in about 10 minutes regardless of who won. But it mattered because we saw Luke almost fall into Darkness and Vader's redemption. That's why it mattered.
@EdwardsTaicho4 ай бұрын
The duel in Empire is also the best of the franchise because it handles one thing that the rest of the series either forgets or neglects. Lightsabers are fucking dangerous. No flashy flips and flourishes. It looks more like two fencers, carefully probing the other's defenses and just attempting to land a strike. ANY strike. As even a touch will cause severe damage to your enemy.

The main problem with the Cortosis is that it is not set up properly as a plot element. In the Mandalorian, Beskar has enough exposition so that you understand how durable it is, and then when we see characters in Beskar tanking hits, it makes sense. Here, Smilo Ren shrugs off direct blows from lightsabers, causes the weapons to malfunction, and there's no explanation given. And no amount of "Ermm, Akshooally...🤓" is going to fix that because most normies are either going to be like: "They nerfed lightsabers again" or "Why don't they mass-produce this armour?" and just baffled in general because it's not properly set up or explained in-universe..

Much like how in real (Lucas) SW fire happened in space as well sound, the problem is not the 'thing' itself but how disney wars (mis)uses these 'things' in their stories and how weak their basic story telling is - they tell us things they should be showing us and show us things they should be telling us.

EU cannon for Cortosis basically can be summed up as this: It’s a really rare resource that exists only in a few backwater worlds that don’t have the infrastructure to mine it very well, or the ability to process it very well. What amounts of it can be extracted cost a small fortune to buy and refine into anything beyond a trinket, but the material when refined is energy absorbent and heat immune, making it the perfect anti-lightsaber metal. It’s a cool gimmick item for top of the line bounty hunters or warrior nobles to use to cross with a Jedi when they do things the council doesn’t like.

14:00 Cortosis is super brittle, that’s why it shatters when Jecki elbows it or whatever. It’s not used everywhere bc it’s bad as a practical armor, it’s only good against Jedi. I hate this show but the Cortosis is probably the best memberberry they have in the show.

But why would Jecki know that? Why did she punch, what was from her perspective, something solid?

The Helmet breaks off because apparently the metal, Cortosis, is brittle after it’s finally forged. So it shorts out the lightsaber, but the lightsaber isn’t brute force, it’s plasma. Theoretically, it would actually make more sense the hit it with a blunt object. Which Jecki…or whatever her name was…did.
@TKDBoy18894 ай бұрын
The big problem with the Cortosis usage is that it gets zero explanation or implication to it's usage in the show, so only the people who have extensive knowledge of the EU might catch onto it- the EU that, if one remembers, was officially decanonized by Disney. yet they still pull pieces of it whenever they think it's cool for something.
@Valen-mh9fh4 ай бұрын
But why would Jecki know that i.e., why did she think punching what looks like a solid object is a good idea?

Drinker makes the crucial point so many seem to miss. A Star Wars fight is not really about how good the choreography is. It's about INVESTMENT in the outcome of that fight. Investment in terms of the work done to build up tension, investment in the characters involved, the stakes that are presented, everything that came together to lead up to a dramatic point. Even animated fights, such as Rebels Obi-Wan vs Maul, understood this. That 2min scene in Rebels eclipses anything seen here in 20min of live action. So Disney have understood this in the past, so has Filoni, they are just choosing not to do the work anymore.

It was usually backed up with how rare it was and how there weren't any (maybe three) beings who could forge stuff from it. Obviously we'd have to wonder why super rich people wouldn't use it despite its costs and difficulty, but you'd have plenty of reasons why they wouldn't (Sith don't use them by way of lifestyle, it's too easily spotted and would make you a target by force users, it's also not well known etc. ). It's dumb that some rando Asian Ezra Miller wannabe has armour made out of it, and it's clear it was haphazardly put in because "it's cool".

I find it funny that no one has commented on this amazing line of dialogue, spoken by Smilo-Ren, fully clad in black poncho, the Cortosis helmet, no mind reading apparently and voice changed and all, when he says to Sol, "You... don't remember me?"
@mbob43374 ай бұрын
All they have to do is when designing the fights. Include the force. When Smilo does a push. Show the Jedi blocking it. Since he's strong it overpowers them. Than they fall. Than you can have the excuse. Where they just drained themselves from using the force. They get slightly tired and have to wait. Allowing Smilo to win over that redshirt. Other things they could do is show some people deflecting the force with one hand and using the Saber in the other. Smilo could be also using force jump and grab trees. So they could do a group force push. That he knows he can't win. So he's dodging. Jump on trees, spin. Throw Saber. You can make both sides look good and not stupid. And it would make the fights MORE interesting. When he goes up against a Master. Than Force is pointless. They're equal and cancels out. So they have to fight with the Sabers.

The reason The OT scenes such as Planet Hoth both looked, felt and was perceived as real, was because it was real. The Hoth scenes were filmed in Norway in minus 20-40 degree Celcius, and that is cold. Freezing is 0 Celcius. Also the Nors Jeager infantry and locals was on set because stand ins from US couldnt cope the cold.

How would you judge the fight choreography, when they turned the lights out and put all the trees in front of it?
@Daradain3 ай бұрын
The whole kortosis thing is actually a very interesting microcosm of the writing issue. Up until now Kortosis only existed in select comics and video games, so most fans don’t even know about it, let alone normies. All the Acolyte needed was a two minute scene (maybe at the Jedi temple) where someone talks about investigating the illegal trade of kortosis, explains its properties and maybe even mentions that something the size of Smilo’s helmet would cost the same as a star cruiser. But no… It’s just thrown in and people are left to go to Google to figure it out.
@vincentthendean77134 ай бұрын
Oh Cortosis. I remember the KOTOR games have straight up swords made out of them. You get funny scenarios where you fight normal dudes with your lightsabers and then pull out your metal sword against siths.
@EvilDoresh4 ай бұрын
It's cause those games run off of a fork of Dungeons & Dragons, D&D having always been very melee-focused, and them needing a way to explain all those melee weapons going toe to toe with lightsabers.

I love the fight between Vader and Luke in Bespin. We haven’t actually seen the scope of what someone like Vader can do, because his duel with Obi Wan wasn’t a good representation of that. But we _do_ know he’s very dangerous. He is the thing Luke has to overcome. Luke, meanwhile, has been training heavily in a short span of time. This is his first opportunity to test himself, and we can see this during the fight- he does well, but Vader’s fighting one-handed, and is completely in control of the fight the whole time. This is conveyed in shot composition, body language, music, and actions. It’s probably THE duel to use to demonstrate how to do a fight and tell a story at the same time.

So here's my version of the episode Start off with the force push, Jedi are separated, it's dark and some get lost in the jungle. Smilo-ren vanishes into the jungle with no-one knowing where he's gone. Mea hands herself in to a small group of Jedi including Osha, Sol and a few others like she said she would, saying she wishes to atone for her sins (yes you can even her lying here if you want, as a good writer wouldn't have that cringe scene in Ep4 where she just flips on a dime). Anyway so with a dangerous unknown threat now present, they hear a scream that cuts off in the distance. Unsure of where it came from, the group decide to bail and regroup at the ship as splitting up to find out is too dangerous. So now this smaller group starts running back, finding the hand of a possibly dead Jedi but no body. Suddenly a flash of red and one of the Jedi near the back is cut down suddenly and viciously. Some of the group decide to buy time to get Mea, Osha, Sol and the young padawans/knights get back to the ship. Insert fight scene here of Smilo-ren slowly dispatching Jedi one by one. The other group soon reach insect world and are forced to turn off their lightsabers. Smilo-ren catches up but doesn't know of the threat so when lighting up his saber, the insects attack him but he quickly realises what they're after and so after dispatching a few turns off his own lightsaber. Sol pushes his Padawan to get going, saying he'll fight him now and meet them back at the ship. Osha doesn't like this but is restrained and reasoned with by the others and eventually goes along. Sol and Smilo-ren can now have their fisticuffs fight. Whoopie! Smilo-ren senses or knows him is at a disadvantage and retreats into the undergrowth with Sol chasing but ultimately losing him. Final scene near the edge of the forest, just about to escape, Smilo-ren appears in front of them. Fight begins, everyone other than Osha, Mea die. Have Sol appear and finding his Padawans and other guy corpses or just witnessing their death from a long enough distance. Mea feeling like she's going to die, runs off during the fight with Osha chasing after her. Sol and Smilo-ren fight again. End the episode with Sol winning but again Smilo-ren uses something to escape. Osha reappears (but no in reality it's Mea in her clothes appears out of the jungle claiming to have lost her sister). TA-DA! How's that?

I mean I know that in the Clone Wars series there was a massive, absolutely fucking gigantic creature who’s hide didn’t necessarily short out lightsabers, but they sure as hell didn’t do anything to it. I think I remember it was an episode trying to tackle endangered and somewhat dangerous species and whether they’re best to leave alive or to kill or something, and they wound up killing it with poison gas stuff and Palpatine really let the bad guy shine
