I always read the credits, especially to check out things I liked. Oftentimes, the same name will come up multiple times. That’s when you can rely on that person: if there’s a movie you haven’t seen yet but that person is in the credits, watch it.

Its really cool, the Russo brothers worked with Sam on winter soldier when he was stunt double for Chris Evans, he did the same with civil war, then proceeded to be stunt coordinator for infinity war and endgame, now the Russo's where writers and producers on extraction, the Russo's has a great eye for talent.

I've said for awhile that Hollywood needs to look at their stunt teams for the next generation of directors. Many of these people have effectively apprenticed under several, if not more, of the genuinely best directors and leaned film craft from the bottom up. They do their best work with the most difficult of scenes. Compare that to the current system of either hiring directors who've done a single we'll received indie and don't know what's happening on a larger production, or else just hiring J.J. Abrams. I strongly suspect this resource has largely been ignored because of classism.

Benefits of using an actor who has experience working in action films. Fight beats, choreography, etc. You can't teach that to an actor on an 8 week shoot whilst he's trying to deliver a performance.

@@wjzav1971 Personality was often more gained from the charismatic lead than the movie script/plot. In essence action movie consisted of a bunch of action scenes loosely tied together by the script. Although I agree some scripts had more depth than others, it was mostly "switch off your brain and enjoy the ride." What I intended was to show the contrast between those movies and the political/social driven crap of these days, where not only the script but also the actors don't matter, because everything has to be sacrificed to the preachy message.

I think honestly it boils down to people having racial issues. I don't think this movie would have caught nearly as much heat had it been set in Russia starring Michael B Jordan. India has a giant movie industry which is mostly calibrated towards local market, with singing and dancing and all that jazz merged with comedy or action in proportions rather disturbing for outsider viewers. But there are tons of talented, versatile people there, which Extraction clearly proves.

And most of the shots including important ones took place in india. few in thailand, and way fewer in bangladesh. For a movie set in dhaka doesnt look like it was in dhaka at all, most of the "bangladesh" location are out of dhaka city as it seems. Setting a balls deep action movie story in dhaka is impossible.

***SPOILER ALERT**** My favorite scene in the movie, is when Hemsworth knocks out the 5'5" 125 lbs villain with an open hand slap and told him to sit down. That was the most realistic scene and I laughed so hard. Here's my $20 for the sequel, if and when.

Well to be honest they ARE superstars of action movies, it's just that the action movies made today are rarely as visceral as they were back in the 80s/early 90s because the studio chase the lower ratings to maximise cinemas ticket sales. This is part of the reason I love Korean cinema as they don't try and sugar coat the violence or the consequence of that violence on the main characters in stories that call for it... at least nowhere near as much.

There is always the chance that some modern day equivalent of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus will come along and form a modern version of Cannon Films and we'll see the likes of Cavil, Hardy and Hemsworth get solid action roles. Perhaps the backlash to woke culture will help such a studio prosper.

I especially liked the long, continuous takes, as well as the pacing and John-Wick-like deliberation of the combat choreography (though that will get old fast if I start seeing too much of it). I also appreciated the absence of easy wisecracks and glib one-liners, which helped keep things grounded and gritty. In other words, I still haven't been disappointed by a Drinker recommendation.

No preachy woke nonsense or 98lb girls tossing 200lb stunt men around like rag dolls. Just watched this a month or so ago. It is a delightful movie. The right amount of emotion, suspense, and flat out badassery.

What really set this movie apart was the skilful insertion of emotional depth into Hemsworth's character. The reason he's jaded and seemingly doesn't care too much about whether he lives or dies is because his young son died of leukemia. And this tough, resourceful badass didn't have the balls to be there at his kid's side while he died. The scene where Hemsworth opens up about this terrible act of cowardice, and how it's eating him up from the inside is about as powerful a scene as cinema can deliver, and Hemsworth welling up as he delivers it shows some serious acting chops. The other thing that really lifts this movie is the subplot about the rise of the street kid. You're never quite sure where it's going, but every scene - particularly the one on the rooftop with the gangster - is pretty electrifying. Quite simply, a brilliant movie.

Simple but touching story you still can take something out of and exceptional fighting scenes. Makes you really feel for the two main characters. No stupid jokes, just a no-nonsence man dealing with a grave situation. Definitely was a joy to watch, thank you for recommending.

Thanks for the recommendation Drinker, a solid action flick - action is beautifully shot, pacing is quick and characters are straightforward and honest - Hemsworth plays within his range, and isn't laboured with stupid dialogue ( or having to apologize for anything) - a minimalist performance that is exactly what you'd expect from a jaded veteran with repressed emotions. He's convincing as a total badass but never feels invincible, or just another terminator , so that a sense of constant tension is present. After killing a room full of guys he's exhausted and needs a moment to recover. The subplots are integral to the main story, and add rather than detract from it - I liked how it's Farhad, the boy whom he spared, who returns at the end of the film. The supporting cast of actors are smart and believable - no over the top antics from the primary antagonist or ridiculous monologues. This film is an example of how less can be more in terms of action film dialogue. Cheers !

Didn't the same guy then go on to direct Gravity? which was basically edited to be one long take and was also awesome. Funny how everyone seems to spruce 1917 as the first movie to do this. Pretty sure there was a Russian movie years ago set in that art gallery in St Petersburg that was done as one take. (should know the name of gallery but its Sunday morning and I'm hungover and procrastinating over a cup of tea and bloody Simon Whstler lol)

I love this movie because underneath all the relentless, razor-edged action is the foundation of a moving, relatable, and believable story. Every decision is backed up by well-established character development. Nothing felt like it happened just for the sake of the plot. Hargrave was a stunt man and coordinator for Marvel before he got into directing, and it's clear watching his colleagues talk about him in Corridor Crew's Stunmen React series that he understands that everything in a film must serve the story. I can't wait to see what he has for us next.

Sam Hargrave has started as a stunt man for Chris Evans in Captain America Winter Soldier. Then, he was climbing the ladder doing stunts in Civil War and later became a stunt coordinator in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. This is his first film as a director and Russo brothers were also producing this film. I believe that he said in an interview that Russo brothers didn't have the time, so they recommended Sam Hargrave as a director for this film, I might be wrong though. PS: I know he was also doing stunts before Winter Soldier, but when he met Russo brothers his career really launched at full force.

i was watching this movie with a cig glueed to my lip and a can of beer gradually getting warm in my hand. This is how fun it was to watch. I was forgeting to light the cig and drink my beer during actions scenes... and that is a high praise comming from me. As always i love your taste drinker.

I was pleasantly surprised from Extraction. It quickly became one of my favorite action movies. The magic for me, was its ability to combine incredible (mostly accurate) action with an enticing simplicity that conveyed deep emotions of the human spirit. Weaving complex emotions and good dialogue.

This is the closest we've come to the action movies of old. Chris does a fantastic job and totally had me involved in the character. While I also like the Bourne type thinking mans action, this straight to the point, nonstop rollercoaster action will always have a place in my heart. I thought the stunt coordination in this movie was breathtaking. Bring on more of this please. Prepare for this channel to explode as people realise you have a second channel Will :D

Actionwise, yes. But I found the plot and character sorely lacking. Commando and Rambo weren't just action. They had a LOT of personality.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! From start to finish I was glued to my chair and didn't want to move (even though I could pause the movie). Three times I cried: 1) When the kid's best friend was shot in the head; 2) When that poor child was thrown off the roof; 3) When the kid fell into Tyler's arms and sobbed "I want to go home!" If that didn't make you want to reach out and give him a big old hug, then, check your pulse. *****/***** for covering all the bases: A no-nonsense/kick-ass hero, gunfights, car chases, non-stop action, and blowing shit up!

Just finished watching it and I have to say it was a delight. The character development and story angles are a lot more in depth than you give it credit for. You speak as if it is a shitty Jack Ryan film and that it certainly is not. The setups in the beginning of the film has a brilliant payoff at the end that some people whom watched it twice failed to spot. Entirely changing the ending according to ones perspective/perception skills. This is one of my favourite fictitious yet serious realistic combat films.

Drinker, you magnificent bastard. You mentioned that Covid might open the door for more smaller, more compact movies. I can't help but recommend "Standoff at Sparrow Creek". It's a gritty, calm and brooding but minimal movie. Really impressed me. Takes elements from Reservoir Dogs, The Thing and 12 Angry Men, but with a unique and modern spin and setting. Filming, lighting, the acting and suspense, all really well made. The tailer only tells you what you need to know, and not a single thing more. If the trailer intruiged you, you'll probably like the movie as well.

This film was entertaining as hell. Hemsworth was badass in this, as was the indian guy that was persuing him, cool character. They both handled their action scenes superbly.
