As is the case with everything, dosage makes the poison. As far as the “call poison control if swallowed” bit, the company is referring to the event that someone ingests a tablet as a tablet, not diluted in water. The dilution allows your liver enough time to metabolize and detoxify the free iodine, or for your thyroid to convert into an organic form that can be used in hormone production. In English: yes, it is safe to consume that iodized water. It would be very similar to consuming iodized table salt. Also, our bodies actually require trace amounts of iodine to function properly, so it helps in that regard.

When the instructions say to unscrew the bottle to allow the water that has come in contact with the iodine to wet the threads they are assuming you have submerged the bottle in a stream or pond water that you intend to drink and therefore bacteria filled water has covered the threads, if you don’t allow the water that you’ve put the iodine into to seep into the threads you risk drinking small amounts of contaminated water on the lip of the bottle. In real life, hepatitis E is the worst that I'm aware of. Hepatitis E was thought to only infect rats, until a man in China was diagnosed with it in 2018-2019. That one man is still the only documented case of a human contracting hepatitis E. Given the current state of the world, the decided lack of responsibility exhibited by the CCP, and half assed efforts to deflect blame/cover up what really happened, I think it's safe to assume hepatitis E in humans is more common than anyone would like to think. The one documented case most likely slipped past the radar too quickly to be covered up.

I enjoyed it far more than I would have expected when Brian responded to a Dune reference with *another Dune reference*
@larstallinger67955 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that caught me off guard. I only know a single other person in real life that knows what Dune is. That person happens to be my best friend that I watched the Dune movie with... and some weird follow up we found one time when renting DVDs. Everyone else I mention Dune to looks at me like an idiot and says it's called Doom, not Dune. Makes me a bit mad because they refuse to listen when I tell them I'm talking about something completely different. Thanks to this episode I googled Dune to try to figure out what the weird follow up I had seen was and noticed there is a 2020 Dune movie scheduled. Seems like it's a remake and remakes are usually not that good but this one might be. Back in 84 some of the things just looked so horrible. I remember there was a scene with a lizard or something CG creature (It's been a while since I watched the movie) and the creature moved at like 5 frames per second while the rest of the movie was like 30. The movement looked so damn horrible it was sad... but still I loved the movie. Muad'dib! Muad'dib! Muad'dib! Keeping my hopes up!

@@larstallinger6795 As a teen, I tried and failed to read the first novel (found it too slow to get into; been meaning to give it another shot as an adult but haven't made the time), but I've seen at least one of the movies and vaguely recall watching a miniseries on the SciFi channel (back when it was still spelled that way). Always loved the Litany Against Fear though!

@@SolarShado I'm not much of a book person myself so no books here either but I did love the movie and the games. @@larstallinger6795 The new Denis Villeneuve directed movie is a rewrite based off of the books rather than a direct remake of the movie. Semantics I know, but in this case I think it might make a difference. I am remaining optimistic. As for the books, they were a little easier to reread as an Adult, for me the meandering plot was a struggle as a kid. Even still, I got through to the fourth book I think before I just needed a break from the series as an Adult. I read a number of slower books these days and it was still hard work at times. It is definitely worth it though, they are great books if you put that aside.
@larstallinger67955 жыл бұрын
@@libertyts I would actually prefer that anyways so it's all good to me. The 1984(?) movie was missing a lot of scenes the 2000 mini-series had. As a person who has not read the books I do not know if those scenes are in the books or original scenes added for the series but some of those scenes made a lot of sense from a story perspective. The way Paul was portrayed in the mini-series however really made me sad. He wasn't a leader. Just a damn kid using spice powers to bully people while having a god complex. I really hope the remake has a more mature version of Paul. My point is that neither of the 2 versions we have so far are satisfying. Completely starting over makes way more sense. Considering how I ended up loving the story of Dune even though the media I absorbed it from was quite bad... there is a whole lot of potential in there waitng to be tapped. For anyone else reading I would like to make it clear that I don't actually dislike the 1984 version. It was awesome for its time but anyone watching it in modern times will think I'm crazy because 40 year old CG is 40 year old CG.

So, if you ever do this again: You want multiple repetitions of the sand and charcoal filters. So it's: Gravel, sand, charcoal, sand, charcoal. Since you are not using activated charcoal, you might want a little more charcoal, too. Activated charcoal is about three to four times as effective as regular charcoal. Iodine is generally pretty safe, but too much can be dangerous. Stick to the label as closely as you can. (Like you did in the video) Boiling the water will kill most pathogens, but not necessarily all of them. Some can survive the heat for quite a while. That said, you are unlikely to encounter those in your standard issue pond or puddle, so that shouldn't be a problem. If there are heavy metals or oil in the water, this will still not be enough. To remove the heavy metals, you pretty much have to distil the water. Not sure what to do about oil, but it probably has a different boiling point than water. You can try boiling it off (assuming lower than water) or distilling the water (assuming higher) to remove it.

Please re-do this! As a bushcraft and survival instructor, I don't think you guys really understood what each step was for, nor do I think you guys would know when to use the different techniques or methods for cleaning water. I would love to see a proper water treatment episode!

This actually answered a question i had literally last week. I was reading the label on some spray bottle of snow-melting-stuff (with methanol and ethylene glycol) and i was wondering why it said to NOT induce vomiting. anyways, thanks for the vid guys, really funny, and keep it up!

If you want to clear the water up and have enough to matter, you can freeze it. Impurities will go to the last part to get frozen. At least most of the impurities anyway

On the one hand, the lack of safety precautions taken in previous episodes affects my enjoyment of this show. On the other hand, this was one of your best episodes to date.
