I had a childhood friend whos father was murdered by a man robbing the store he worked at. The killer had just been released from prison killing someone during another robbery. When I asked why the killer was released I was told "we can't just let people rot in prison because of a mistake they made." I never understood why the killers life was valued more than my friends dad or my friend who at 8 had to now grow up without a dad.

Because they don’t have enough evidence to formerly charge him and the legal amount of time for holding for questioning was surpassed. If for example they held him for a couple hours longer than legally permissible and continued to question him and he admits full guilt, it would be inadmissible in the courts, hindering any sort of prosecution. My local battery store has an Ai backed system that uses publicly available ip highway cameras that can track a customer on the highway headed to the stores parking lot then track them in 4k from there To inside the store and back out and back to the traffic cams when they leave. Pretty impressive and completely legal. Dudes a massive nerd and it shows in this system, he has the camera feeds on a large tv in the store too. He can add “profiles” to license plates and faces as well and get real time alerts if a certain disk timer is noticed by the software within a certain geofence. And his store is under 750sq for just selling batteries for a franchise. Like wtf huge corporate stores?
