Love these tests. My only addition for your consideration is that while torque goes up with a shorter horn, you are losing a bit of the speed. Angular velocity is constant (ish) but linear velocity at the closer connection is lower. That might dampen the speed a tiny tiny bit

@@CrawlerCanyon agreed. I slow my steering speed down on my race buggy (using the transmitter). I don't notice the speed hurting my crawlers but I definitely saw it happening with the SA75 on your video the other day. It could just be that I was attributing it to something else too 😅

I have the need for a low profile steering servo for my comp crawler, but not for $160! My budget is around a third of that and it is slim pickings! Currently eyeing up a 50kg yantrs

The US-Amazon equivalent of the Yantrs appears to be Sincecam, as the servos are extremely similar cosmetically and a lot of the ad-copy verbiage overlaps. The Yantrs 50kg is $65 + $5 shipping (2-3 weeks) for me, while the Sincecam is $90 and Prime (delivery tomorrow.) I'd pay that 20 bucks for the convenience, and I"ve put the servo on my save-for-later list in the hopes that I remember it. I have a couple of rigs that could benefit from an LP servo, but avoid it purely due to expense.

@@CrawlerCanyon £60 or so for me delivered from ali, i have bags of patience so the wait isn't an issue! I look forward to seeing your results if you get one! I'm running an offset capra front axle (vanquish knock off) and there is enough space for me to make a bracket and move the servo from on top to behind. I think there is just enough room for a full size, but i don't fancy scraping the bottom of it on everything and would rather have the extra clearance on offer!

What you have to remember about your amp reading is that what you see is what the ESC draws at 12.6 volts. Current draw from the ESC by the servo at 6 volts is going to be roughly double, assuming 100% efficiency. Since 100% efficiency is impossible, we can safely assume that the BEC is maxing out. It would be interesting to test one of those big power servos with a 10 amp BEC to see if the internal BEC is limiting power.

Just my opinion, but If it's $150+ for the servo and $30+ for the BEC to get "maximum performance" I would rather just get a direct-powered servo of similar spec for $100.

I have this servo on an SCX10 Pro....and it's total overkill. That said, I wanted a low profile servo and it was only a few more dollars than the 500lp at the time of purchase. Love the channel and content!

Hopefully I hadn’t missed it but has anything else half height come across your desk that you’d recommend? I’m working on a Wraith 2.2 at the moment and wouldn’t mind moving the servo back a bit to clear the horn on the cage but then the back becomes a problem. This looks pretty shit hot but in Dollaridoos it’s the equivalent of a modest hatchback.

This is a problem area, because high-torque low-profile servos are a niche inside a niche-- there's tons of sub-20kg offerings out there, and cheap, but that's certainly not moving the front end of a Wraith around. You're looking for ~50kg, and it starts to get expensive real fast. The NSDRC RS700 (pre v2) seemed to be a fair deal to me at $100USD, but the v2 is $125-- which is where most of the options end up, including Reefs, AGFRC, Savox, etc. I would have to say that the NSDRC RS700 is still the best buy in that narrow category, as it's direct power, can handle 4S, and costs $35 less than the Raw 800LP. Still woefully expensive. When I went 4WS on the Capra, I cut the cage. Because LP servos are too expensive. Objectively.

Stall torque is what all I go after when I install servos. Miss conception is I would rather have the speed on the throttle side. Oh by the way you gave me your hebbie jebbies watching your videos. Just kidding, boy it’s going around. Takin vitamin C and Alka-Seltzer cold & cough. Dang I hate feeling like this. At least your videos get me through it. Oh and the Reef servos $$$$$$$$$

Reefs or nsdrc? I like that reefs plugs into rx but I like price of the 500b. Also would the 500b good for a vrd? Running the big brass wheel and prov going to do wheel weights

The 500b is for 4S, AFAIC. It is lackluster at best on 3S. So if you're doing 4S, the 500b is a great choice. I don't buy Reefs because I can buy AGFRC for less money and the same or better specs. The "Reefs Tax" is too high. A Reefs Triple 7 is around 700oz and 0.09 on 3S. An AGFRC SA75 delivers basically the same numbers for $80.

@@r23g51r Yeah, it will work, but 430oz on 3S is pretty low-- that's around 30kg. Flash Hobby will give you 50-60kg for the same (or less) money.

I took it out of the package before I tested it, and that was the end of preparations. I didn't come with a programmer, so I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

I don't see why not. Remember though, low profile is more expensive than full size, and I doubt you need an LP for your application. If you're on 4S, maybe a Reefs Triple 8?

I’m talking in Canadian dollars if my prices seem inflated? My $200 Reefs servo performs “way-better” & has out lasted 5 of my good friends $45 Amazon blue-body specials. It also works the way it did the day I installed it still. It will more likely than not, outlast the current 6th. I’m going make a bold statement and say it will most likely outlast a 7th & 8th of the $45 Amazon blue-body specials. It has been run (not gently) for more than 3years now. Do the math, & tell me what’s the more cost effective servo? Replacing broken crap (no matter what we are talking about) with crap, will always cost you more down the road. When ya do something, spend more time or money and do it right, and you’ll most likely not need to do it again any time soon. THE END! 😂 sorry for the novel.

Most cost effective? The Amazon blue cases, without question. Like... it's not even close. At least 90% of the servos in the fleet are Amazon-sourced, and I've never burned out a single one. Killed servo horns? Oh, too many to even count. The Reefs 800LP isn't even economically viable-- you buy it to fill a specific need, and know that you will NEVER recoup that cost-- the servo doesn't hold a paying position, so it truly can't. Just call it sunk and move on. Let's ignore that two servos have died on the test rig and they were both $100 or more. In more case than we would lime to admit, more expensive often means just that. I will raise this point, which was a big sticking point for me in cycling as well: time as a unit of durability. There's one that works: hours of service. ... and one that doesn't: I've owned this item for X amount of time. I have a handsaw that has to be over 25 years old. Doesn't mean it's any good or very sharp, it just means I don't use it that much. Baseline runs a $50 Flash Hobby direct-power 50kg servo, and it has been in him since he was built. 300+ hours. That servo has "paid for itself."

Okay, well my friends poor luck must be a factor? 🤣 or perhaps the blue-bodies just don’t hold up in the cooler climate up here. Different experiences can probably be found anywhere. So just cause my experience (or should I say my friends experience) has been so different with the inexpensive blue-body servos. It is still just what we have experienced. No matter what the differences are? The fact is my friend has spent a lot more money on his 6 servos than I have in my one Reefs, and we usually are running together. So he’s not putting more running time on his servos than I am. The other nice thing, is if or when my Reefs looses teeth? I can purchase a gear-kit that will still cost less than a blue-body special. I wouldn't say luck is a factor. Unless he's blowing the teeth out of the geartrain (which seems unlikely) my semi-educated guess from this many miles away is that his endpoints were set incorrectly from the beginning, and were never adjusted so each subsequent servo dies the same death. If I had had one servo die, I would chalk it up to bad luck. If two die under the exact same circumstances, I'm gonna start looking at setup. The fact that he got to six is basically Einstein's definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.

@@CrawlerCanyon I will explain….. No, I will show him exactly what you have said here. I once said to him “It’s gotta be something with set-up? Ether end-points or something?”. He said “Naw, it’s never been the exact same thing that goes, don’t matter to me, as long as I get a couple months out of it? I’m happy.” He just figures they’re a great price for the amount of torque you do get, so they don’t owe him anything after 30days. I agree with you though it’s like banning your head against a brick wall, just cause you see blood? Doesn’t mean you’re breaking through! 😂

Servo geartrains are largely unchanged for decades, and are as susceptible (or more) to cascading failure than other components. Put in bigger gear teeth and the pins snap, put in bigger pins and the gear teeth snap again. With proper power and a short horn this servo can get past 1000oz-in, and the gears are no bigger than a servo making 100oz-in. No servo maker warranties gears, and none should. I've broken gears on the test rig, I've broken gears on the rocks. If you don't want to break gears (and none of use do) stay around 35kg. Never seen a gear fail on anything making less than 50kg.

Again, and you touched on this in your ramble. If you are too cheap to buy a power system to supply the required current to see the best performance out of the premium product. You should not buy the premium product. Unless you are incrementally upgrading the model. Of course that should start with the appropriate power system. So you don’t damage the premium servo, from browning out the system every time you turn the wheels.
