Drive 55 For Texas Slideshow (ca. 1980)

In 1974, the federal government enacted a National Maximum Speed Limit as a part of the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act. The maximum speed limit was set to 55 mph. In 1980 the Texas Jaycees, in cooperation with other organizations, began the "Drive 55 for Texas" campaign to raise awareness of the maximum limit in an effort to get more people to observe the speed limit law (in 1979 Texas was the state with the lowest percentage of drivers obeying the 55 mph speed limit - 30.3 percent). The video here is a multimedia presentation produced by the Texas Jaycees and Austin based consulting firm Canson & Associates. The Austin Junior Chamber of Commerce held local events to screen the production, which consisted of a slideshow timed to an audio recording playing off a cassette.
