Duluth Minnesota is known for its steep terrain. This drive is on Lake Avenue starting at the top of the hill and goes to the bottom. Then the drive starts at the bottom of the hill on Lake Avenue and goes to the top. Driving would be even more challenging during the winter months in Duluth.
Driving conditions:
77° F
Partly Cloudy
June

I've been on this hill a time or two. Nice to see this and the blooming Lilac's now that it's sub, sub zero here in Alaska.

You are 100% correct Mike, this hill was a beast to drive! We stayed out by the mall and drove up and down this a few times. It would scare you to death in the winter if it was slippery. wow!

When I was a kid, I used to love to imagine that downhill, there was the sea or a big lake waiting for me. It was one of my favourite solo games. I loved riding my bike down the main street of my village. The road that goes down toward the train station and trying hard to see a body of water in my head. Instead, there is a huge mountain with a naked and steep face. Beautiful view and tour, Mike. This is pretty much what I had in my head as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s.

We literally need to switch locations for two weeks. By the way, that’s exactly when I was a kid, that timeframe too. It feels like yesterday, but I know it wasn’t. I still have good energy and it’s all prospective, stay positive and keep things moving forward. No point to get caught up with being a downer. The story that you just told I could almost envision being there. It is really cool to think about. The beautiful country of Italy. All the best my friend 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️

@@vibewithmike I'll be forever a 80s kid at heart! Yeah, it wasn't yesterday yet it seems like that and now I'm already 40. Time flies and that's why we always have to keep that inner kid alive! I would totally spend a few weeks in Duluth. I bet you would also love South Tyrol! All the best to you at the other side of the pond! :D Have a great day, Mike! 🇺🇸🇮🇹🛳

@@vibewithmike wish I lived there. I’m sure it’s a lot safer than living in Minneapolis. I wish we could have gone under the bridge when we were on the vista star boat in June of last year but it was rainy cold and the waves were too big . So we cruised around the pier . But driving around Duluth and seeing lake superior was amazing. She gets angry when she wants to, she definitely lets you know whose in charge.. Duluth will always be some place special to me. I

I remember the good old days when you could turn directly off Mesaba Ave onto Lake Ave. We used to stay at the motel on top of the hill with an amazing view of the Lake. When I heard the Security call on my scanner from a boat we had plenty of time to get to Canal Park.

Mike! I am putting Duluth on my bucket list for summer or fall of 2023. But sunrise at the Duluth Canal is probably not going to happen. Yup a realist. But I love rewind recorded sunrises by all the brave people who do! Probably with coffee in hand. I have been to Duluth, but it has been some time.

Chris, I think it’s cool how we can look at at photos from 100 years ago in Duluth and see many of the same buildings. 100 years ago one of the buildings was a butchers shop for the community, now you can play video games and throw axes, in a bar! Same building!

@@vibewithmike Absolutely! Lots of great old buildings downtown. I worked in what had been called the Usan building on Lake and 1st. Would be interesting to know that building's story... And why a building on 1st has a pineapple up near the roof.

That was fun Mike! A real 'steep hills of Duluth' drive. Nice seeing the gothic-style old Central High. Was surprising you did not continue over the the Lift Bridge onto Minnesota Point, or cut over into Canal Park to turn around. The fade/change at 4:50 was subtle.

I would have loved to continue to Canal Park but it was Grandma‘s Marathon weekend. They had everything shut down there. Those old buildings in Duluth are very cool.

Hey Mike, I can’t believe I missed this video. I know things have changed but Central was my High School. Across the street on the north side was the “Candy Bar” restaurant where all the smokers would go for lunch since you couldn’t smoke on school property. A block above that was “Vern’s”. Best hamburgers with steamed buns. I believe it was changed into a police substation after some racial incidence. I remember a fight breaking out in the middle of the street and one of my teachers running out of class to try to stop it. Diagonally from Central was Washburn junior high. That open gravel lot west of Central was where we played football for PE. Across the street on the south was the Barnes Ames building where we went for swimming. During the winter we didn’t have time so we didn’t bother to wear a coat and hat, even at 20 below. On the way back to class while crossing the street, our hair froze solid. I have more but that’s enough for now.

I tried looking online for more information and especially pictures of Vern’s in Duluth. It was a fountain shop too I’ll bet.
