Drive - Favourite Scene #2 (Standard's return)

Another favourite scene of mine - Standard's return party... I included the entire scene as it's important to the actual moment (which is only a very short part of the entire piece).
1.22 - 1.50. The music fades up, effectively becoming non-diegetic, after Standard says I love you, we slowly push in on Irene and cut back and forth between her and Driver - all very basic, but all so perfect.

Making Standard a good guy was such a great choice. Most movies would make him a cartoonishly bad guy but life is rarely that black and white.

Standard was actually really cool about that interaction. He knows Irene didn’t have a sexual relationship with driver. That still showed a lot of patience since she has shown it with him. Driver wanted them to work out. That’s why the pawn shop hits hard.

And if you notice the set peices in the film have a character within themselves the driver's apartment is damp and cold and abandoned and the need for someone and Irene's room is very tacking and warm feeling in mixed directions in witch her life has taken her and the walls in the building symbolize the gap for their feelings for each other

Love how the Director kept cutting back and forth between her at the party and Gosling. While the words of the song kept playing out. Showed that she really cared for Gosling. Not even her husband so much. Great movie. The Director’s best work.

@debadattadas2007 11 ай бұрын
its not like she didnt care for her husband or was thinking about gosling during that. its more of complex reflection on her life. and a mix of her wanting to give her husband fair chances and wanting him and the family to be happy as well as nurturing a feeling for gosling. Thats kind of is mark of a compassionate person like her character

Anyone who says that Oscar is a bad actor (shockingly enough there are a few out there) needs to watch this film and then watch any other performance of his. He does such an amazing job at playing the kind of guy you just feel dirty for even being around, like you just wanna take a shower after even talking to him. he does it without overdramatizing, he does it without cliches, he does it with subtlety and menace and it leaves you with the creepiest feeling ever. Definite proof he's one of the best actors ever, period.

I think the best thing about this movie is the trick NWF plays on us. We end up rooting for the Driver (just like Irene does) even though he is a violent criminal - a murderer and a robber in fact. While he may not have robbed in the sense of entering premises and taking things, he was the getaway driver, and part of his payout is funded by the robbery anyway. That makes him just as culpable as the people who hire him. As for the murders, in some sense we find this justifiable because he murders murderers, but what difference does it make? It;s thus really a bit odd that Irene would fall for him over so little - helping with groceries and playing with Benicio - given that it seems that Standard basically does what the Driver did - he seems caring toward Benicio, and he took out the trash - the primary difference being that Standard got caught and was sent to prison.
