I think that's actually one of the most important questions about that film. Why was he wearing that mask? Him wearing it is extremely poignant and it really isn't obvious, there are all kinds of interpretations possible. That pragmatic interpretation that it was about hiding his identity is rather simplistic and less interesting for me personally, even if possible somehow, on a naive level, as you point out. What if he was wearing it to actually express his identity? Also, what's the actual function of that very mask? Pretending to be the main character of an action movie, so some kind of a self-pastiche? Protecting stuntmen against injuries - masks perhaps shows us, that the driver does atrocities while being afraid/sensing that it will eventually hurt him? Masks have many functions and meanings in our culture, after all. Even more so stuntman's masks, it seems... Refn plays with us
@BareBandSubscription2 жыл бұрын

4:44 is the moment where Nino realises he fucked with the wrong guy. He was so afraid of getting killed by the Mafia, but he had no idea that the Driver was far worse than any Italian gangster they could have sent after him.

This scene is really important as it shows that the driver at one minute can be super calm and happy but then can be extremely violent and on point it’s a class of 2 personalities in 1

I think the diner scene showed it far better, where he calmly threatens the guy who wants him to do another job. He was already upset at Standard’s return, so you can see the rage bubbling inside and then about to explode.

Why does Nino run into the water to get away from Driver? And Nino doesn't have a gun on him? I guess he's just completely dazed and out of it from the crash...

I thought the same. Perhaps Nino in his bewildered state thought drowning in the ocean was a better fate than what the driver was going to do to him.

It’s a disguise
@markrobinson93943 жыл бұрын
Two reasons: 1. To disguise himself. He's killing Nino in public, so it's safer in case of witnesses. 2. At this point in the film, Driver has lost sense of who he is. He's been forced to commit horrible violence and then he finds one of the only people he cares about murdered because he got him involved. The mask represents his letting go of the person he used to be. It's symbolic.
@user-jt7ju8zm8u3 жыл бұрын
@@markrobinson9394 it’s a mask why else would he wear it
@markrobinson93943 жыл бұрын
@@user-jt7ju8zm8u From a filmmaking perspective, the mask represents his repressed violent side. It’s why it was featured so prominently earlier in the film during the stunt scene.
