Anyone driving along this road could have absolutely no doubt they were in France -- as well as in South America too, of course. The traffic signs, the surface markings, the road layouts at junctions: all are exactly the same as in metropolitan France! (Richard, I was very surprised to learn that you didn't know France drives on the right -- as does all of Europe except for the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta.)

Yeah, I agree. He gave me a good conversation. Most drivers will only say a few words and not talk much. Also in the city most people would only speak a few words in English.

In French Guiana, we speak French, but we can learn Portuguese since French Guiana on a border shared with Brazil, Portuguese speaking! There is a lot of Brazilians in Guyana, usually gold panners! why should all of us speak English, and why do not Americans speak French?

interesting video, the dude speak English pretty well and know a lot of stuff about his region. I'm from metropolitan France and I had always been interested of overseas regions and the video allow me to learn about them. I would like to go to French Guyana some times you can regonize you're in France by looking the licence plates and road sign however I can clearly see the living conditions are fewer there than the metropolitan by looking the old buildings. anyway great video I hope you will upload more video ;)

Thanks for the kind comments. French Guiana is very, very different from the neighboring countries for sure. I was surprised at how much it costs there. It seemed like European prices, but in South America. I went to New Caledonia a long time ago. They had their own currency back then though.

French Guiana's GNI per capita is half the France's. But it's the best in South America. Live standards are similar to Uruguay's.

Can’t imagine this is France. French system and infrastructure in a Guyanese landscape. I’m sure quality of life here is better than its neighboring South American countries and even the most remote “native” villages use The Euro.
@emperor536
@emperor536 4 жыл бұрын
Actually quite the opposite; France has practically abandoned this country so the quality of life in most South American countries are way better than here. Actually French Guiana is more of a strategic geopolitical value to France nothing more- very sad indeed.

@Doffy Rob very desrespectful but i understand why. If you knew what Per Capita Income meant you would know that it has a ficticious Per capita income because its pared to France. Secondly the Human Development Index is far below European and even South American standards. Your wikipedia searches were fruitless with no undersanding of economics

@Doffy Rob lol gdp per capita is worthless to evaluate quality of life and how rich people are Sure in euro french guyan have more money then brazilian or colombian But you forgot the cost of life is 4 5 times more then brazil/colombia Food courts dinner that would cost 2 euros in brazil/colombia. Would cost 10 euros in french guyana

This is pretty useful. French Guiana is a part of France (and thus the EU) so it's not surprising that prices are European (or even higher because stuff needs to get imported from the continent). Unlike other South American countries FG is NOT independent and is integral part of France. I plan to travel and stay there for about 6 mo and my French is really broken. This video encouraged me to stick with the plan.

@@RichardsWorld Yep. France is pretty monolingual compared to most European countries, and Guyane isn't the most cosmopolitan of regions by a long shot. I worked in La Réunion for a while, and while it's also a pretty far flung region, and even more cut off in some respects (being an island) it's much more cosmopolitan. That said, I'd love to live in Guyane for a while - it's a botanists dream. Guyane has the largest national park in the entire EU, and hardly anyone bothers to visit - it's such a shame.... but also, a dream come true :)

Does anyone know if it’s possible to move here in Cayenne? Start a little fruit stand, hypothetically, selling to tourists? Would a foreigner have difficulty relocating here to start a new life? Is a foreigner able to purchase a little cottage to live in? And pay little yearly property taxes? I’d like to visit here and see what’s up? Is it dangerous? Or are there stringent rules here?

Hey, that is a VERY GOOD catch there. I rented a car in the neighboring country of Suriname and they drive on the left. I've also been to the French islands in the Caribbean Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint Barthélemy. They drive on the left side. In St Martin they drive on the right side, probably because the other side of the island was driving on the right side.
