This is one of the best and most well spoken reviews I’ve seen on the ND2! One feature that I think is cool about the engine that wasn’t mentioned is Mazda put an oscillating feature on the throttle body to counter act low speed bucking when you’re crawling along in 1st gear. I don’t think I’ve heard of any other car with that feature and it’s a cool idea. Makes it very smooth in stop and go.
@DriveMX53 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much bro! I didn’t wanna get too technical in the video haha, that’s why I included the links for those details. I really appreciate the feedback, and agree with you, that was a genius update
@alangross22772 жыл бұрын
Good call on the engine comment. My 2018 Club would buck like crazy at low speed, like 15 MPH between about 1500 and 2500 RPM; it reminded me of my mom learning to drive a stick shift, back in the '60's when I was a kid! Initially, the turbo I installed magnified that issue, but was supposed to have been eliminated with the tune by Fab 9...I never got to find out as my car burned up completely in the garage with my home this last June. That said I replaced it with the exact same model but a 2021 ND2, RF Club with BBS/Recaro Package in Machine Gray. The power difference between the ND1 and ND2 is really pretty dramatic.

I have a 2016 soul red soft top and I am ridiculously in love with it. I am 6'3" and I still fit pretty well in there. I had an NB that was good but this is a whole new level. I agree with the door length. It's a real squeeze, even in the garage, to get into the car with the tight remaining angle. The NB was much easier to get out of. I think they could have added more detents for door position as well. And yes, the door arm rests are not comfortable. I do not mind the stock seats but they could be better quality fabric. The telescopic steering column is a great upgrade but if you have monkey arms like me it is not much of an issue. The revised motor adds needed power but I have never felt that mine was lacking in power particularly. I would mention that the 5 link rear is spectacular at tracking. I do feel that excessive lateral body movement translates into the rear end settling outward in turns and the body lean is noticeable. It does "set" after the swing and lean but it is a soft spot. Older models felt more planted and confident in the corners. (The other attributes of the car make up for it!) I feel that this is partially due to the pillow ball bushings at 3 outer points on the links, and perhaps the other bushings could be stiffer. I blew one out and replaced it with a neoprene blank. There are no replacement single bushings form factory, they make you purchase the whole outer knuckle so you have to get creative. I think there is a race spec bushing set issued by Mazda out there as well for dear price. Larger sway bars are a really good upgrade to these cars. Helps markedly with the body lean. Upgrading to the Bilstein shocks makes a load of difference as well. There are quite a few used sets on evilbay from folks that went to coil overs. I find the car to be just fine with the Bilsteins. Finally, the trans and rear differential oils need to be changed far more often than you would think. The fluid gets dark and burnt quickly. This may be due to the oil Mazda uses to produce a smoother "cold" shift. I have found the Lucas synthetic 75/90 gear oil to improve the notchy synchro feel and the shift to reverse, and it runs just fine in cold weather in the front and rear. I really think it should be changed every 30K. Even 50K is too long in my opinion. They really are fantastic cars to drive and I get so many compliments and people looking at the badging to find out what it is. I take it out often in the high mountain roads here in Northern NM it always puts a smile on my face. Cheers and thanks for the in depth review!
@DriveMX52 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I agree with everything you said. I haven’t tried to Lucas fluid yet but may try that next. I swapped mine to Motul Comp 75-140 and it was harder to shift when cold but nice once warmed up. Went back to Mazda fluid after moving to a place that actually gets cold

Wait ur 6’3 and fit in a miata? I’m 6’1 in shoes and needed to take my shoes off in a 2022 mx5 to “just” fit with the seat all the way back, lowered down and the telescopic steering wheel pushed all the way up. Granted my legs are longer than my torso but still I can’t imagine fitting comfortably in this car at your height without customising the seat.

The car doesn't come out in the winter, so stays in my garage for seven months of the year. I have a 2016 ND1 which I love. I do have an upgrade that I added that I will bet that most people probably have not thought of. The trunk in the car while larger than I expected but still obviously very small. I take my car from my main home to my summer home and I have to take more stuff w me than will fit in the trunk. I put a trailer hitch on my car and I tow a Harbor Freight clamshell trailer for the stuff that will not fit into the trunk. I keep my speed on the interstates to about 69 mph and I slow down on hills to reduce the strain on the engine and I have not ever had any problems. I still get about 36 mpg with the trailer.

Even after I installed the Greddy Turbo Kit in it I still got 30-33mpg. Before the turbo I was getting about 40mpg. Of course that is if I drive it nicely, which I rarely did. I got mine from a Santa Monica Mazda, they got it in trade in from an old lady who bought it, serviced it, and traded it in there so I knew I was getting a sweet deal. I own the 2019 ND2 RF. Overall, I love the car. But as with any car, there will always be some negatives. As you mentioned, the armrest is one of them. Nice review! I have the 2021 RF Club with BBS/Recaro Package in Machine Gray and I had to laugh at your liking of the cup holders. I think every other review I've seen for the MX-5, the reviewer griped about the cup holders! LOL! I think they are innovative and functional and don't mind them at all. I don't know when people became so reliant and adamant about having to have a drink in the car; it's almost like they think without one, you might die or something! When I grew up, we would drive for hours and hours before stopping to get anything to drink, and we all lived through it! Your assessment of the infotainment system is pretty spot on with my thoughts. As far as storage or the lack of it, I kinda like that, as it doesn't allow clutter! My phone fits in the cubby in front of the shifter while it's in the leather holster I use. A holder for sunglasses might be nice but I can make do! I love this little car. My 2018 had 8,300 miles and only 6 rock chips; I fixed them with Dr. Colorchip and after doing a few coats , filling the chip in, I had a really hard time finding them. My 2021 has no chips that I know of but I only have 3,700 miles on it; I am very mindful of following too closely. Talking about the road noise ... I have had a 2018 ND1 RF with BBS Package and now my 2021. I bought my 2018 in Eugene, OR and they have very rough pavement due to the amount of rain they get. The road noise on rough pavement would drown out the stereo to the point I just turned it off. On good, smooth pavement it's fine.

It’s an adhesion issue for the most part from the factory in Japan.
@DriveMX5 Жыл бұрын
Wow! I’m sorry to hear you’re having these issues. I’m impressed and glad to hear you were able to get the car repainted but I’m shocked you’re having trouble with your top and screen. No issues with either of mine yet, thankfully! Other than the top rubs a bit on the roll bars but I never did anything about it

They are probably my favorite seats I've had in a car. Really impressive, especially considering the price point of this vehicle. Occasionally I'll see them up for sale on MX-5 Facebook groups but do they go for a pretty penny!

Leather shift and brake boot will upscale that console. Redline Goods has any variation of stitching and colors custom fit for MX5. My Cipher steering wheel has held up and still looks great at 120,00 miles (2016 Club).

I'm hoping my Zymexx wheel holds up like that as well! I like the shift and ebrake boot that it came with, but did have those from Redline Goods on my NA and loved them! Thinking of getting a shift knob at some point, my stock one is showing some wear sadly.

This is the most thorough review of the MX-5 I've seen so far. Many of the downsides are not mentioned in other reviews. Nicely done! Only thing missing is, how does it do if you leave it out when it rains often? Would I need to worry about water getting in?
@DriveMX56 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! And no need to worry about water intrusion, with one caveat. The drains on either side of the soft top need to be checked/cleaned out ever so often or water can pool up underneath/behind the seats. There’s a few good videos on KZbin showing where the drains are at how to clean them. It’s just a screened basket that collects leaves and large debris

Excellent review and very tasteful mods! I've have an ND1 since 2016 and upgraded pretty much everything over time except for boost (SC or TC). Its my daily driver and I still love it after almost 6 years. I'm a shorter guy so fits me perfect - a lot of my taller mates (6 ft +) have fitment issues with it being so little. Most of them have really quick cars (Audi RS etc) but they love driving my car just for the rawer experience. Love this channel from Canberra, Australia.
@DriveMX52 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! They are a totally different driving experience to those cars, fun in their own way. I’m definitely on the top end of someone who fits, and luckily I’m not the type of person that desires lots of headroom or legroom or I wouldn’t like it either. But also depending on body type, if a taller person has really long legs or torso, I imagine they would have trouble fitting in the car. Do you have plans to boost your car in the future?
@MrJorgie732 жыл бұрын
@@DriveMX5 I've look into it heaps here in Oz and found a few places that boost the ND - but really so scared with the ND1 2016 transmission issues - I've never pulled the trigger. I'm content with the way it is. So jealous of your Recaros and Brembos :(
@DriveMX52 жыл бұрын
@@MrJorgie73 I totally understand that. Maybe exhaust and a tune would be a happy medium between more power and safety for your transmission? The Recaros and Brembos are lovely. I know there are Wildwood kits for these cars if you want to step up the brakes, or perhaps find a used set of Brembos. They pop up every now and again here in the states. Same with the Recaros

Per 23:00 - major issues for the interior: 1) Passenger floor hump & Bose subwoofer 2) The RF center cubby hole is RIDICULOUSLY shallow. The soft top is much deeper 3) Watch for your left knee causing wear just above the speaker on the driver side door over time 4) No lumbar support adjustment for the seats 5) The infotainment screen should be slightly angled towards the driver 6) The stock steering wheel is too thin

2019 GT-S with Flying Miata front and rear sway bars KONI shocks. Watch out on a tricky winding road! Roush Mustang 😮💨, Dodge Challenger 😮💨, Camaro 😮💨, anything Corvette below a C8 😮💨, GT-R close, modern M3 close, modern Audi S series close. If it's not light and nimble the ND2 can handle.

If you are going to mods, save yourself a lot of money and get an ND1 with the E85 tune from Fab9, and an exhaust. It will walk away from pretty quickly from a lightly modded ND2 and really pull away from a stock one.

As an owner of ND1, I could say the only things I don't like about the stock mx-5 are: 1) Body roll (easy fix) 2) Slow Infotainment system with annoying safety advice each time you start the engine ( you could fix this by hacking the system, highly recommended) 3) 4 bolt pattern wheels, you don't have many options for new wheels (no easy fix) As this video states, this is an excellent sports car!

I recently traded up from a 2019 to a 2023 MX-5. I installed the Goodwin Roadstersports Race muffler. I immediately noticed a quicker throttle response; I'm commenting on this because I haven't seen anyone address this before.
@DriveMX5 Жыл бұрын
I never really noticed a difference in the throttle response on mine or my fiancé’s ND1 after installing that exhaust. Maybe there’s a difference on the 2023 that is causing it? All I noticed was the much improved sound
@Illusionyary9 ай бұрын
I didn't realize the subwoofer was mounted in the passenger footwell, that explains why there's much less legroom than previous MX-5s. I have a 2019 RF and I love it to bits, the only things I'd say is my owners book doesn't fit anywhere in the car at all as it's too big for the cubbyholes and the A/C vents for the driver seem to just direct cold air onto my hands and nowhere else, with the only effective vent being the one in the middle. I just wish they offered a better colour selection. The orange is beautiful but it's a special model, standard models are all neutral colours with even the red being very metallic and dark. There's like 4 shades of white/grey, bruh. I opted for pearl white as I think it suits the car very well but I would love to have a more bright vivid colour like a sunburst yellow or something as nearly every car on the road is white. Perhaps in future I will wrap.

I have 84,000+ miles on my '16 Sport. Nothing done other than replacing the stock brakes with Wilwoods from Flyin' Miata, the rear calipers were freezing up from road salt here in New Hampshire. I have a set of wheels with snow tires, the car does OK in snow even though it doesn't have a LSD. It also sees several miles of dirt roads daily, not the usual conditions for these.

I like the way you talk about the miata and how you put sooo much useful information in a relatively short video, you did an extremely good job with that, sir :) and you know a miata enthusiast when you hear one speak about it. I own a 2019 Miata myself (soft-top) and i just love it. Never had any problems with it, nothing went wrong, no malfunction, it just makes a squeaky noise when its cold and i drive slow. it has something to do with the wheels cause it's in a regular interval. I wonder where you got the trunk tray from?! It looks so much cleaner and more organized.

I love every iteration of the Miata, and own an NB2, but I do think my favourite is the ND2, even more than an NA6 or NA8, which are also phenomenal cars. The ND2 just takes all the things Mazda did so well in the previous generations and made it into a more performance-oriented car, which I think was an excellent decision. NAs and NBs are less performance and more playful roadster, the NC sorta loses a little bit of that but starts to explore that more performance side, and the ND took it a step further. I'm looking forward towards a hybrid-yet-still-fun-lightweight-and-manual Miata. Good review.

Great review! Looking at a 2023 or 2024 (probably 2024, saving up for one) and I wish they had that color available. The current red is nice, but I am not a red car guy and after that you are basically stuck with black, white, or grey. Probably go silver/grey if I have to. I could wrap it, but I don't think I would do that till she is off warranty or I've had it a few years.

I love the Miata but one thing is like scratching on a chalkboard. I wish Mazda would delete the cheap looking and feeling infotainment screen. In its place, simply use an adjustable mount or in-dash cubby with usb-c connector for smart phones. Keep the interior clean.
