Often times, base model cars are a compromise. But the new entry-level version of Porsche’s electric Taycan offers a more intense rear drive dynamic than the all-wheel drive 4S and Turbo models. And with 200 pounds lifted from the front end there’s a lot to like when carving corners. True, it’s not as quick as it’s siblings and the “affordable” price begins at $81,250. But in Frozen Berry paint and Blackberry interior, it’s a conversation starter. Tom Voelk checks out a European spec Performance Battery Plus version with 469 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque.

Another great review Tom! You are spot on about range and this car might be quite usable with the standard battery (while being even lighter and a better value). The recent introduction of the e-tron GT adds the complication of being priced at the RWD Taycan level (similarly equipped) while offering 4S powertrain and the large battery. Choice is good.

I agree most buyers think they need more range than they really do. However, that is due to the variable quality of the charging infrastructure. If (hopefully WHEN) EVs have charging infrastructure on par with ICE vehicles, that will be the real turning point for EVs. 99% of the time 200 miles of range is more than enough, but it is that 1% when you have to go quickly to another state/ city because of a family emergency or weather event that has to be kept in mind. I've had to deal with 3-4 of those in the last 10 years, which is of course a tiny proportion of my driving experience. However a vehicle which can be there for me when I really need it will always be on my requirements list when I'm purchasing a car, I think the same is true for most people.

"Some manufacturers are optimistic about things like range. Others are more conservative." That's one way of putting it. Another way would be: "Some manufacturers lie their asses off all day long every day. Others are careful not to promise things to their customers which they don't deliver."

Can the entry level Taycan be raised up with the touch of a button to combat kerbs?
@dangrass
@dangrass 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom. I love your reviews and agree that the base Taycan is the best choice, if you want a Taycan. I was a little unclear on your comments regarding Tesla's unwillingness to provide loaner cars to journalists. As a pragmatic gearhead I very much appreciate a useful car with great performance. While I've traditionally viewed Porsche products as being good values, the Taycan makes me wonder. What I don't get is why anyone would want a Taycan over a Tesla 3. The Taycan is substantially heavier, has less interior and luggage space, has notably buggy firmware, a substantially inferior charging infrastructure, and is clearly the slower war in performance driving. (Nurburgring, as an example) Even the cheapest Taycan is over $100k when equipped as comparably as possible to, say, a Tesla Model 3 Performance....a car that will simply blow it into the weeks. The base Taycan is really more comparable to a base Model 3.....$105k versus $45k. While the Taycan surely has more consistent assembly quality and offers some really cool colors, it sorta shows that the designers didn't quite know what they wanted to do. Things like the intrusive B pillars, the mishmash of screens and controls, the halfway implementation of the Tesla air curtain ventilation....just not quite there. The biggest issue is probably the weight. All in all, while Porsches typically represent very rational choices when compared with the likes of true exotics on one end and American/Japanese stuff on the other, in this case it seems that while these guys gave it their best shot, it's just a car that's basically inferior to a Tesla that costs a whole lot less and offers a whole lot more utility. For those who must have a Porsche, I guess that's all that matters, but for practical gear heads like me, the Tesla 3 is just a better car. Having said this, I predict that Taycans will be the all time champs for depreciation and will likely be great buys on the used market in the not too distant future. A 2 year old Turbo S for $50k? Maybe that's the ticket.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan. No argument, the base Porsche is slower, heavier and more expensive than the Model 3. And Teslas are fun to drive. Clearly they offer the bang for the buck proposition. Those with the money to spend (many people do) the Porsche offers vault-like chassis structure, Porsche grade driving dynamics, vastly superior build quality, possibly superior range in real world driving conditions, and exclusivity. The rapidly expanding charging network is becoming a non-issue these days since EA, EVGo and CP combined are about on par with Tesla's network. Smart buyers would look at their needs and routes to make sure there's infrastructure along any route taken before buying and some 85% of charging is done at home anyways. It comes down to choice and people don't buy cars in a vacuum. I have no dog in this fight, I'm an observer. Being a car guy and knowing what goes into both brands, I would buy the Taycan in a heartbeat if I was wealthy. With the opportunity to move from Porsche Taycan Turbos to Chevy Bolt EVs weekly, I can say that in nearly all driving, there are few places to use 0-60 in under 4 seconds. Is it fun in the few places it can be done safely? Yup. But I'm not racing people on my way to Costco so anything faster than 0-60 in 5 seconds has diminishing returns. Tesla does a bang up job when it comes to software and electronics (though I believe Autopilot is wildly overrated). Props to Team Tesla for making the electric car cool, creative and affordable. On the whole, I find the Taycan to be clearly superior to Model 3 and S, but it certainly comes at a price that some are unwilling to pay.

I was one of those people who thought the Taycan was a rip off compared to a Model 3 or Model S. Yes 0-60 is not as fast but 30-100 Is where you feel it. The Taycan handles so much better and that's what I care about not stop light drag racing. Yes the range is less, but who needs 400-500 miles of range? Most people don't have that in their ICE performance cars and 90% of people charge at home. I'm not even going to discuss build quality, you guys know how that story goes. Yes Tesla has a decent charging network which they are said to open to all cars soon. After driving both brands I went with the Taycan RWD with PB+. Teslas need a real refresher because they are looking very dated these days.

Easily one of the best looking automobiles regardless of powerplant. The Taycan's beauty is matched only by it's price. Of course you want the base model with the smaller pack to keep weight down as every pound is worse handling and range. Also, most of those packs are useless nonsense. $4130 for pleather seats? You can get an actual upholstery shop to put full grain leather in a car for less money. $1500 to add memory to your seats? $7000 for a convenience package that comes standard on a Honda Civic, other than the sunroof? That's absurdly expensive for a sunroof. $660 to have your mirrors painted the same color as the car. $1330 for LED headlights. Wow.. I'm in the WRONG business. This is legalized theft compared to even what comes standard on a typical Mercedes C class. As I have it optioned out in the configurator, with the sport package ( neccessary,) , non white paint, folding mirrors, and a few other basic things like interior lighting (Lol - NOT kidding) it's just under $85K for a "base model". Optioned out like a mid-level trim Accord? $95K. I honestly haven't seen a car this itemized for basic equipment since the 80s.

Does the standard Taycan ride any better, or worse, than the 4S? I am sitting on the fence with this color. Does it look feminine? It reminds of those cars awarded to sales achievers with a certain women's cosmetics company.

Every single person, including a King County deputy, two bros in a an F-150 and a van full of construction workers gushed over the paint color. In person, it looks very cool.

I feel the standard rides a bit better than the 4s because the standard is only RWD and the 4s is AWD so the standard is a lot lighter and more agile and consumes less power than the 4s

Come on Tesla 3 Standard range plus is as fast as this slug with a better gear selection and only costs $37000 with a lot less plastic. All model 3's has heated rear seats available.

This car is an astonishing rip off. The Polestar 2 is 20 thousand dollars cheaper and better in almost every single way. The only thing the Porsche has over the Polestar 2 is looks, the Taycan looks great but the Polestar 2 is faster, AWD, and has more luxurious features. Also, why does getting the vegan interior for the Taycan cost 5000 dollars more when it is standard on the Polestar 2?
