I own a small home in the heart of a big city, a full size truck would be a nightmare to park and navigate through the narrow streets. A mid size truck seems like a great vehicle but I'd like to see how the Japanese manufacturers compete with GM. I'm particularly interested in what Honda is working on, my hope is that they actually make a "small" truck instead of trying to fight for the same customer that the other companies are all after.

Will do Deion B. He's such a great guy. If I had a dollar for every time I wiped down a car in the past 12 years I'd be a wealthy man.

There are so many recalls that it classifies the GM twins as Lemons Was going to take a look at them but recalls scared me off. Gm is going to have to get better workers for me to consider a GM

It'll take a lot of convincing to prove that a Canyon is a better truck in the long term versus a Tacoma.

Anyone looking at one of these should wait for the 4cyl diesel engine option coming next year. Better fuel economy with the towing capability of the v6.

Now that the Tacoma and the Frontier is updated and is coming this spring ill have to wait to decide which one to buy.

Check back after the Tacoma reveal this week and let's have a discussion here about what they've done with it. Should be interesting. I don't think Frontier is up for a significant change for a year or two. Titan is coming soon though

Driven Car Reviews Tom, the 2016 Tacoma debuted in NAIAS in Detroit. Titan has as well.

I miss the Sonoma-size pickup, but I'm not into 4 door trucks anyway. It is probably feasible to get a full size truck cheaper, so if small size is the reason to choose it, it fails by being not small enough.

It still looks like a massive truck. The word mid sized doesn't come to mind. This looks as long as an F150 supercrew

If you compare these "compact trucks" to HD's of the 90's, they are not much smaller, what happened to the cheep little trucks that you could beat up and not damn about.

It's a nice truck and all, but, you're right Tom. A well equipped version of this truck buys you a full sized truck, so it doesn't make the most sense. Maybe used?

You must have missed the part about having to drop options on the fullsize to make it comparable. I'd much rather a better optioned midsize over a fullsize just for the sake of it being bigger.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 10 жыл бұрын
As Mr. Wilson said, you'd have to drop a few options on the larger truck. And for some people, the smaller more nimble truck is a better option. As I said, in the city, this is a much more practical vehicle. The trick is to know what you need and buy the right vehicle. It's great that we have choice.

The fuel mileage is actually competitive with things like the Highlander so it may not be that hard to coax people out of their crossovers. Since we haven't yet seen the interior of the new Tacoma and don't know if they did anything to the powertrain its difficult to say whether they have left GM an opening. If they went too conservative on the interior and carried over the powertrain they will have left some selling points for Colorado and Canyon. Should be interesting to watch at the least.

There are rumors that there are new engines, nothing nailed down though. I'm more curious to see what they do with the chassis structure and interior. The advance photos show sheet metal that looks much like the current gen (with a new grille and tailgate). Photos can be deceiving though...

They have a new 3.5L V6 but kept the same 2.7L 4I. They have not released the numbers on the new V6 though.

How can you say reliability has been less of an issue with the thousands upon thousands of vehicles being recalled?
@1guyin10
@1guyin10 10 жыл бұрын
Today's vehicles just don't break down like they used to. However, in today's political climate companies are recalling things that never would have been recalled in the past. There are huge recalls being driven by failure rates that in many cases are less than 3 per million. It wasn't that long ago that you were lucky if a car made it to 100,000 miles. Today the first average first owner will drive it that far. The quality gap that used to exist between various companies just doesn't exist anymore. No one in the business can afford to make junk.

Reliability is different from safety. Todays vehicles have largely been recalled for reasons of safety, not reasons of reliability.

Your statement got me to thinking. This is from Forbes concerning 2014- Toyota/Lexus/Scion led the pack for the second year in a row with nearly 5.3 million cars and trucks recalled, followed by the Chrysler Group at around 4.7 million and Honda/Acura with nearly 2.8 million models recalled. While it may come as no shock that luxury-car maker Mercedes-Benz came out atop the list of least-recalled brands, with an average 0.41 units recalled per vehicle sold, General Motors, with nearly 100 million vehicles recalled since 1985, actually placed third-best, with 0.65 cars and trucks recalled per unit sold. Here's the link if you want everything in context- www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2014/03/26/automakers-with-the-lowest-and-highest-recall-rates/

Driven Car Reviews Honda may top the list this year. Since no one can seem to flush out the cause of the Takata airbag issues there may be many more vehicles added to the list. (If they have no containment point they really can't justify limiting the recall) Honda may well end up recalling almost everything they have made in the last 12 years or so. There is some legitimate concern that all these recalls may desensitize car owners to recalls and make it even harder to get more than minor participation in them.
