From the videos I have seen, I like the idea that Teammate prevents the driver from getting complacent and relying entirely on the system however, I believe they could have taken a better approach than constantly beeping and making announcements. That immediately negates and stress/fatigue-relief that these systems provide.

Great video as always Tom! This system as it currently stands will do well in Japan, but will probably not translate well to America (no pun intended). Most Japanese customers have an established relationship with their dealership salesman, and will spend hours at delivery learning about every detailed feature, so a system like Teammate with a relatively high learning curve will not be an issue.

I live in Japan for the majority of the year. The Lexus system might work on national expressways, but would have limited use on highways anywhere near urban centers or local roads. The traffic in Japan generally is too crowded for such a system to take the stress out of driving in that environment.

The trouble I see with autonomous cars is mostly due to my suspicions that it won't happen on a large scale unless all cars are able to talk to each other. In other words, it won't be statistically safer unless all (or at least most) of the vehicles can sync with a system that is able to coordinate a path of progress to avoid both accidents and limit congestion and traffic jams. I live in Northern California and I can't use cruise control for any length of time even when I am in a long open stretch of the freeway. People are just driving too inconsistently and erratically. Speed limits are often ignored. I just have to cancel it eventually and go manual. As a result, I don't give it any consideration when I buy a new car when it come to such tech. It's practically useless to me in the real world. Also, it just might give too many people just one more reason not to pay attention to the road or engage in the vital act of driving. Is that a good thing?

This is the missing piece right here...your car will need V2V and V2I to make true level 4 and level 5 self driving cars. This was discussed a decade ago, but it seems to be off the table again. Till we get back to this...and use a universal standard...we will be stuck.

This "let me tell you how to drive your car" thing does not seem very useful... Either the human or the machine should drive, not both. It's like having a second novice driver in the other front seat with a second set of controls, and trying to communicate with them all the time. You can't hand the controls over to them because they are a horrible driver and can panic at any time, but when you try to drive it yourself, they keep telling you what to do.

Super cool for a prototype. I did notice he took off his glasses. As with most systems it seems to have trouble with that. Not a nitpick, it's a prototype so it's fine. For now. But it is a conservative implementation. I would rather have Super Cruise though given Toyotas notorious need for extremely loud and irritating beeps and alerts. Hahaha. The last time I took my dad's RAV4 Hybrid through the carwash I nearly died of a heart attack with the car screaming and beeping like crazy. I think it too almost died of a heart attack. Hahaha!

It's funny to me that Toyota/Lexus is literally one of the last major automakers to release some form of advanced driver assistance, and in typical Toyota fashion, they deliver a system that is overcomplicated, underwhelming, and one that lags behind pretty much any other maker. Also, for all the criticism of Tesla's brand name for its driver assistance system, anyone who's ever used Autopilot for more than 20 seconds will tell you that even if the name somehow confused you into thinking that the car was in fact fully automated will understand through 20 seconds of practical use that it is in reality an advanced driver's assistance system. Also, Tesla's system is infinitely easier to use and infinitely more flexible than this system, and moreover, I think Tesla's approach to a path to automation based on AI, machine learning and computer vision is the right approach since it removes the need for complicated third-party high-definition maps and will allow it to be used on almost all roads, not just highways.

As a Lexus RX450h owner and a Tesla Model Y owner (with Full-Self Driving Package), I've got to say this seems like a hassle to engage and deal with. So much beeping and bonging for nothing! This is much more advanced than Tesla's system, but Tesla doesn't care much about safety. Aren't they the only auto manufacturer who've had several fatalities due to their autonomous driving tech? Also, the way the guy is putting his fingers on the wheel is awkward. you can prob just put a finger on your lap and have it touch the wheel the entire time and it'd be fine.
@Curryolla3 жыл бұрын
@@NeutralGenericUser Tesla is the only manufacture that reporters like to report about to get views/clicks. Other car companies have had fatalities with their "autonomous technology" but, why would anyone care if a Hyundai or a Toyota got into a crash? Tesla has the hype and the public interest. As for this being more advanced...I strongly disagree but advanced is a matter of opinion. My Tesla works very well on city streets as well. And, I've seen the FSD Beta software videos and I'm extremely impressed with how the technology operates. In my personal car, lane changes look much smoother than this and unlike this system, my Tesla will respond to traffic lights and stop signs. Finally, Tesla not caring much about safety is an opinionated claim. Driving on Autopilot is like having a second set of eyes. I personally love having the system, but I don't abuse it like others. Frankly, I'd pick Tesla Autopilot over Lexus Teammate, but let's see how many Lexus models get this tech. Seems like only the top end LS is getting it now where any Tesla can get FSD (for $10k)!

And having to actually look in the side view mirror for the lane change is seems ridiculous. The car's sensors should be 10X better than the mirror, so why force the driver to use an inferior system? Just change lanes already. Toyota just got the interface and the system totally wrong.

Hard to believe Toyota/Lexus are this far behind the competition. The real slap in the face is that it's on a hybrid, not a FULL EV as the company continues to resist the adoption of EV's and keeps pushing hydrogen and their now antiquated hybrid system. Meanwhile, Ford, who only 2 years ago appeared to resist is now going full speed ahead with EV production and has made some impressive products. VW is still struggling to get their software working properly on their EV's and have taken a very conservative approach to them by having short range vehicles with slow 0-60 capabilities. But Toyota/Lexus has some serious catching up to do.
