1:50 It's a problem with the engine using affine texture mapping instead of perspective correct texture mapping. When rendering in software (which Driv3r GBA has to do because the GBA has no hardware to handle 3D rendering), affine mapping is much faster. Not a big deal with modern CPUs and computers, but for older computers and hardware it's a trade off. I imagine the developers were probably fine with this since getting the game to run anyways is a hassle; I remember hearing that the devs wrote all of their DS games in assembly to make them as optimized as possible, so what you're seeing with these games is likely the best the GBA has to offer. You can't do any better than this, short of putting an extra CPU in the cartridge or something.

My dad and i were in a fledgling Circuit City back in 2006 and I happened across this game in the discount bin for $2.96. I being a broke 13 year old and owner of Driver 2 on the GBA, was ecstatic at this find and proceeded to purchase it knowing nothing about the port. Let me tell you, I was blown away at what I ended up getting for that meager sum. I played the crap out of it, getting well into the Nice portion of the game. Shortly after, I saved up enough to buy my very own PS2 along with Driv3r and consequently didn't pay much attention to this port outside of car trips. Still love it though for giving me a near PS1 quality game anywhere I went. it'll always be special to me for that.

Lean more into content people would want to see, rather than content you want to make. That's definitely a tough balance though that I struggle with heaps haha I'm spitballing a bit but ye, hope it all goes well and you're heading in the right direction anyways so don't stress too much and keep on making content because it's good!

I wonder if the warping around the screen edges is an attempt to save CPU cycles and/or memory by not recalculating perspective on surfaces that are close to being culled (giving up on anything partially-occluded at the screen edge, rather than waiting until they're entirely-occluded), or if it is an unavoidable artifact produced by using a technique similar to displacement- or height-mapping to fake a lot of the 3D, which just breaks down when approaching the camera at extreme angles and/or due to strict limits on bit depth or FP precision for calculating vertices. Has this dev ever detailed their techniques for emulating 3D on the GBA?
@minimme7 жыл бұрын
I'm not well enough in touch with graphics tech to completely understand this, but I pinned a comment which has somewhat of an explanation of this. I'm gonna look more in to it though, it's pretty bizzare
@xmm-cf5eg7 жыл бұрын
I know games like GZdoom also have the warping issue in certain rendering modes when you get near walls and objects, seems like a similar limitation.
@crunchychips81237 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I read that comment last night. The easiest way to describe affine texmapping is like trying to apply a Mario Kart/"Mode 7" linearly-scaled bitmap to a poly/triangle - it only works if two of the poly's vertices always share the same z-depth. The moment you transform the poly 'diagonally', so each vertex occupies a different z-depth, the illusion breaks down. You fix the perspective by essentially "Mode 7"-ing the bitmap a second time, only along the opposite dimension, but this kind of bilinear operation chews up more system resources. Affine texmapping was the favourite bugbear of PS1 owners, although they tended to conflate it with poly 'jumpiness'/seams, which were produced by a separate issue (some really aggressive integer-rounding of vertices - either to save memory or simplify the maths). I don't think affine texture-mapping can explain this, though - or at least not all of it. I figured that's what we're seeing on the ground, and affine texmapping gets exaggerated towards the screen edges - but it gets more broken, too. The squiggly lines on the roads you expect, but I've never seen affine texmapping result in that very coherent 'tunnel-vision' effect from the buildings/walls. The ground may be polygonal, and vehicles and trees are obviously sprites, but I'm not convinced a third technique isn't being used for the buildings. They may be manipulating simpler objects to emulate depth and complexity (more visible in Asterix and Obelisk than in this), like displacement, but the math gets funky at extreme zooms and angles. There may be some kind of filter over the whole scene to correct perspective for one thing, but breaking something else. It is possibly similar to ray-casting (think Wolfenstein 3D, 1D columns of pixels being stacked like a picket fence, stretched vertically and moved horizontally), or even an advanced form of it, given the very limited degree to which the camera can pitch up or down (does the game *ever* show a fluid transition from a top-down perspective, and if so, do the buildings and walls spaz out or collapse?)
@FairFuse Жыл бұрын
I first saw Asterix and Obelix XXL for GBA in another video of yours, and just had to get it. I mean, a 3D platformer on GBA? Come on. I eventually managed to get it (I guess living in Europe helps) and finished it. When looking for other similar games, I saw the same developers made a Driv3r GBA that also looked incredible. I also managed to get that one and just finished it, nearly 100%ing it (bar one trash bag). I must say, it wasn't the easiest game by far, but this review made it sound more difficult than I though it was. Getting all of a particular collectible in Miami allows you to maximize your ammunition at your spawn point, so that helps. But I imagine if you'd only go for the story missions without any side missions (to unlock better weapons) or exploring the world to come across more ammo (and remembering where on the map you can find a lot in one place), it would be much harder.

Heyy, man, me maps are in this video. Though them maps were made for GameFAQs and Neoseeker got me permission to post me stuff in there kek. Thanks for the shoutout man. I have emulated that GBA DRIV3R game to completion, I can say too that it's annoying at places. At least resetting the game also gives the stuff back to the world for the player to re-collect. And the bonuses from side missions completions and pickup thing completions help too. I also somewhat like the version that came out on PS2, Take a Ride is the stuff with all the glitches and cheats.
@minimme7 жыл бұрын
Hey dude thanks for making those maps, I should've got in touch beforehand! How long did it take for you to make those maps? Were any collectables particularly hard to find?
@PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH7 жыл бұрын
You like me maps eh? Good. Didn't do those in vain then. I don't get people contacting me about me work, though then again, some of it goes to great detail about things. DRIV3R is not the only GBA title to get guide stuff from me, in fact. Here's some insight: As I couldn't find anything online on those secrets, I screencapped the whole map, put it together, travelled to the locations of the things, took shots, pasted the blip positions on the correct spot and made the numbers and added the legend. And zoomed the final marked map to x2 size. Uh, I started the Miami map in 2016 actually, and the first revision was done in summer 2016 (took a small amount of time to do after finding all them items), which I posted to GameFAQs (I don't have an account on Neoseeker, they've asked me permission for having me stuff on there). To this day, the Miami one gets almost all the views, I don't know why. Then, making the Nice map took a long time, not only because I searched one bloody item for ages while playing the game through, can't remember which bag it was (and I was lazy and there was other stuff to do). I then eventually finished Nice Map (a year after Miami map pretty much) and made an update to that Miami map, that's why it seems that they're both made in 2017 kek. For some reason I remember listening some funky jazz while making them maps. Which I also do while writing this. In other news, let me tell you a small story. So I've seen yer stuff before, left a few comments earlier and stuff. So I saw this video thingy recommended to me for some reason. So I said to meself "What is this" and then suddenly, me wild maps appear. What a surprise that was. Reminds me, too bad I don't have them clean ones anymore.

I always played DRIV3R on my Xbox when I was younger. It may have been rushed to hell, but it was still entertaining to do stunts with the vehicles.

Got this game shortly after its release. I did not really care about how frustrating it was because I was so blown away by its graphics. Looking back it is still insane how they reproduced those 2 cities on GBA. It would have made the port a lot better if the driving controls and physics were more refined. I also missed the option to replay the missions like in the original version. By the way I played it through on the original hardware 3-4 times and even got a 100% save file to this day. Not sure if I still have the patience to do again.

Did you emulate your PS2 footage? It looks really clean (it doesn't have the murkiness that PS2 games usually have due to the crappy resolution) and the textures look smooth.

I love these little games that force the GBA hardware to make graphics (or sound or whatever) which it doesn't have a native hardware to accomplish. I like the little workarounds. I also think it looks cool. Point is though, it makes you think about how they managed it. It is also like having a "second chance" at nostalgia. The Amiga (a500 or a1200) was my "fanboy favourite" but alas it went to the wall. You could (and still can btw) pimp it out. Even just doubling (or quadrupling)the CPU speed and adding an FPU would be cool. The usage of an FPU in Pre-calculations (or 3D splines and ploynomials, calculus, z-buffer etc) is an example of how you might just about get the driver2 graphics (if you fling in better RAM and a hard-drive and CDROM). A good example of the atrai falcon doing similar is "atari quake" (if you search youtube for the video).

As a DRIV3R's youtuber (yes it exists), i find your video very interesting and well made. You don't say "uurh driv33333R is so bad look at those glitches", you are more tempered. If you like "real life comparison", you should check what i did with Miami and Nice with the real shops and ads in the game (with a better version coming soon). Also, what did you use to record DRIV3R PC ? It looks stunning !

I hope you talk about Driver 2 GBA sometime. I really enjoy the PS1 version, and would love to see what you had to say about its handheld counterpart.
@loganjorgensen7 жыл бұрын
That actually gives you more credibility in my books, ironic enjoyment of bad things is the plauge of the future. :P It's mostly the performance overhead of the software rendered texture mapping that the perspective correction took a hit with so much warping IE. GBA not really a 3D platform, they could have improved it but the frame rate and draw distance would suffer.

Nice video. One thing I noticed is that most of the people haven't played Nice in this game. When I was 10 I bought Driver 2 and haven't reached Rio and Vegas, which means I missed 50% of the game just because of it's difficulty. And the game was expensive as hell at that time.

Dude i loved driver 3. Ya theres some crazy bugs and it may be a little stiff but like u said it was unfinished and had it been finished, it would be groundbreaking. It already kinda was with. Each bullet hole u made on the car was unique and stayed there forever. The way the hubcaps fell off when u hit a hard bump(been around since driver 1). This game truly was a more vehicle focused gta.

This game is definitely impressive. I actually think the GBA is capable of even better though. EA did some incredible things on the GBA. 007 nightfire, the need for speed series ect. They used actual 3d engines, which ran at a solid framerate. And the blue roses engine, used for smashing drive, wing commander, a resident evil 2 tech demo and probably some other things, was a 3d engine which used polygonal models for EVERYTHING. I can't remember if you've mentioned all those in your other videos, but they actually impressed me more because they didn't use sprites.

Which port of DRIV3R is that? It has pretty good resolution for a game that came out on XBOX & PS2

You just don't see this level of effort anymore. The amount of work people used to put into portable game ports is just incredible, astonishing I mean can you imagine if you can put that much effort into a switch port or an N64 port or GameCube port. We did see some of that with the Wii where they actually pushed it and prodded it and created things that were incredible for a system with its capabilities. Sure the PS2 had some truly astonishing work done as well on some of its games to make them fit/run and be fully optimized, but I think the DS and to some degree the 3DS might be the end of the days where they truly pushed what the system can do to its absolute limits. I have to say up coming during the 8-Bit and 16-bit eras I get a real appreciation for when people put in real serious back-breaking labor to making games work and perform and look to its up most you see the effort and see the quality and you just don't see that anymore.

i've played this game a looooooot when i had my old GBA. i was tired to play pokemon and zelda and start to get some differents titles and start to getting this to play and, OMG, this was a very sick game at that time. Those days, this 3D was really a big deal so i've played for a very long time feeling the power of the GBA graphics :)

I guess comparing GBA Driver 3 to Grand Theft Auto Advance, we can clearly see that game design and making game fun is MUCH more important than graphical and technical fidelity.

Yeah, I much prefer GTA 1 myself. But it's definitely better than Driv3r GBA, though.
@josef7337 жыл бұрын
The thing about driv3r is that it actually has some good moments and is genuinely fun at times. The driving is still solid and was light-years ahead of any GTA at that time. The soundtrack and cutscenes/story were also well done and interesting. The shooting bits are the main flaw due to the shoddy hit detection, movement and lousy feeling of the guns.

Driver 3 on the Nintendo GBA was a success as far as I am concern3d; my onlg gripes were with the removal of the 3rd city, Istanbul, and the change in the narattive. Other than those minor foibles, I really enjoyed driving around a 3D version of Miami and later Nice (again, the ommision of Istanbul had to hurt sales wise). If only Driv3r on the Nintendo GBA included actual side missions/tasks like taxi , courier, delivery, races against other cpu opponents, paramedic, and undercover police officer missions...then this title would def. outshine the console counterpart. The golden bars as collectibles, and checkpoint races were Tanner has to hit a certain number of orange cones are a nice touch but it just was not enough to make this a handheld system seller.
