DRIVER MOD - 2015 Corvette Z06 8 Speed - Official Road Test TV 1/4 Mile Drag Video ®

www.RoadTestTV.com C7 Z06 gets the Driver Mod. On September 26, 2015, we posted a video of a C7 Z06 that lost to a GT-R in a drag race because the Z06 driver had difficulty getting the car to hook. We figured there would be a backlash of criticism because everyone thinks they are skilled drag racers. In any event, we put a disclaimer in the original video stating we can't be responsible for the times of the cars if we are not driving. That said, the Z06 owner contacted us and was cool enough to throw us the keys and let us drive. The car is a 2015 Z06 with pulley and tune. The Z06 has stock Michelin Pilot Super Sports and the track was a little slippery. Due to poor track conditions (Test & Tune night with everyone dragging water to the line), our driver came out of the hole soft without loading the converter to avoid a smoke show. With drag radials and a better DA, this particular Z06 should run 10.20's. Hope you enjoy the before and after.
FYI - The C7 Corvette Z06 is powered by a 6.2 liter Supercharged V8 that makes 650 horsepower when stock and is shifted by an 8 speed automatic transmission. Enjoy !!

This was cool to watch so many years later. Bear in mind this car has a pulley, headers and tune. likely pulling same power as a stock ZR1 which exactly runs 1/4 in 10.5 @130mph. I have the Z06 A8, its not that fast bone stock. Same day, same guy could probably do 11.3 @123MPH in my stock Z06 A8. Still pretty darn fast. If you want same performance as this white Z06 A8, don't do pulley, do E85, headers and tune. Safer and cooler for your A8

You wouldn't be able to get 10.3 at only 113 . He definitely let off . It actually looks like he was ahead and lifted off the throttle . There is a flash from his tailpipe at the 1000' mark .

That is an impressive time with the Super Sport tires. I have those too and the traction for dig racing is low even for a stock A8. I have not put mine on the track but the best 0-60 is 3.3seconds on a normal road. Very impressive time on those tires. The Pilot Cup 2s would help maybe not as well as slicks.

Well done. Like many it looks like the cars owner believes the stock tires don't need heat to work. Todays street tires work better when heated just like drag tires do. Crap from the 80's overheated the rubber very quick, but not todays tires. Todays street tires work very well with a bit of track prep and reasonable burnout.

In drag racing it's all in the launch from the start. It takes practice and experience to get consistent launches. I make sure my R/T time stays under a second. I consistently get 0.20-60 second launches and that's my target area. Reaction time is key

We were surprised as well. I follow a similar ritual with every car I drive. Drop rear tire air pressure to about 30 psi. Heat the tires enough, but not too much to make them greasy. Line up in the groove on the track. Quickly and progressively apply throttle until weight transfer begins and car starts to hook. Once tires hook, aggressively and progressively apply full throttle. I would imagine launching a GTR is cake because of how electronic that car is but no all cars are as loaded with computer control as a GTR, but yeah man, it's pretty hard... launching a stick shift is even harder.

Most people who haven't driven a rear wheel drive car with more than 500 horsepower to the wheels on stock tires think all you do is push the gas peddle to the floor and you'll run a perfect 1/4 mile time every pass. If you floored the C7 in this video off the line, the tires would have gone up in smoke and it would have made a 12 second pass - maybe. Most modern cars making more than 500 whp will overwhelm the rear tires if the driver "floors it" off the line as you suggest and cause an acceleration run to go up in tire smoke. That said, it takes some skill for someone to launch a car on stock tires without blowing the tires off and run a respectable time . Thanks for watching !!
