@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for that. My reference elsewhere (Graz) to the hippie bus was more a joke than anything - everyone remembers the swish Magic Bus which turned into multinational company and everyone forgets the ones I went on (Athens to Amsterdam in a week) which broke down so often and never when the food shops were open so by the time we got to Frankfurt Main we were all starving to death. Daze of our yoof.
@Timsvideochannel14 жыл бұрын
I knew such services operated from the UK to Spain, but it had never really occurred to me that they operated so widely. You must had met some interesting people on those journeys. The Hippie busses in New Zealand were a sight for sore eyes often painted to look like houses, they would disappear into a cloud of slow moving black smoke when climbing hills, they were an environmental disaster on wheels driven by original Hippies from the sixties stuck in a time warp of their own making, they were some real characters with a great sense of humour. You travelled through Europe at a very interesting time with the fall of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany. I missed those times, recently I visited the abandoned border posts at Gmünd on the border between Austria and the Czech Republic, complete with a no mans land between then, it is hard to believe that a fence at the end of a garden was somehow part of the Iron Curtain. You must have recorded some amazing moments in history.

Hi Bill, genuine working narrow gauge freight railways are as rare as hens teeth in Europe these days, once popular they have nearly all fallen victim to road transport. The switches appeared to be hand operated, I did notice our train ran through at least one set for the other road, the switches are designed to allow for that to happen. From what I could make out, train movements were authorised by radio. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

Travelling by train is a wonderful way to see the world. People ask me why I travel by train in New Zealand, when it is far cheaper and quicker to fly. My answer is "I am in New Zealand to see New Zealand", this is especially true of the Auckland to Wellington "Northern Explorer". Direct flights from the UK arrive at Auckland, with connecting flights to the rest of the country. An hour to fly onto Christchurch or spend two days travelling on two of the most scenic train rides to be found anywhere in the world along with the jaw dropping ferry ride to Picton. For me there is only one way to do that trip even if time is tight. "Yes" the industrial revolution changed the way we live more than anything else I can think of. I see you have done the Tongariro Crossing, what an incredible experience, there is a reasonably new cliff path along the Kapiti Coast to Paekakariki - it is not the longest of walks, but it is worth it for the views. Have you done it? Take care. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Hi Tim - you are sooh right. Also, train travel is way more elegant and relaxing. IMHO The Mt Ruapehu Crater Climb eclipses the fabulous Tongariro Crossing, and that's saying something. We have done several Kapiti coast walks - boy do you get around!!! Ciao, Diane

Hi, the Swiss line where I believe the maximum speed is 60 km/h (37 mph) is the one you mentioned - Waldenburg Railway. The other extensive network is in Bosnia where the speeds are low. The Shimla Railway (India) at 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) almost the same gauge has a top speed of 25 mph (40 Km/h) - 760 mm Railways were all about building the lines at an affordable price, speed was not so important.

I vecchi treni fanno sorridere la gente :-) Hi, I am pleased you enjoyed the ride. The railway is run by railway enthusiasts, the work they put in to keep these little railways running is appreciated by other enthusiasts and the local community alike. The old trains make people smile :-)

Lunga vita a tutti noi!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Who would think that a train trip would cover country that looks just like where I live halfway around the world. We even have a local train with tracks that follow much of the highway. This is the only way I could ever see Austria. Beautiful country! From North Carolina, USA.

North Carolina is on my bucket list, I've heard it's a nice place. I have visited places in New Zealand that could just as well have been in England, it is usually the style of buildings that gives the game away. I'm glad you enjoyed this virtual trip to Austria. Best wishes from the UK.

nice landscape! 8:34 truck is much faster 🤔 I see no signs to whistle - just decided by situation ?

The truck is much faster and I think you are right about the whistle, the driver only used it when he really needed to.

Wow. No gates for major road crossings. That's exciting. No signals either. But a very nice ride indeed!

I live in a country where railways without gates and fences would be unthinkable, yet it is common throughout much of Europe on secondary lines. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.

Pozdrav i poštovanje! Naročito u Srbiji, i Bosni i Hercegovini. No, preko 99% takvih pruga u bivšoj Jugoslaviji je ukinuto, a potom i demontirano. Pozdrav iz Novog Sada u Vojvodini i Srbiji!

At 23:24 there was a car parallel to the train and another coming the opposite way. For a second I thought it was going to be a head on and then I realised it was Austria and not Australia. Only joking, the most beautiful country on earth. Austria is a magnificent place. Cheers.🇦🇺

Hi, travelling through countries that drive on different sides of the road can be a bit alarming, even as a pedestrian, I walked out of a Paris station having just arrived on a Eurostar from London and looked the wrong way for approaching cars, I was lucky the motorist way awake. Austria is a lovely country, but then so is Australia,
