Strange how most KZbin car videos have a lot of music, when most people who are into cars want to hear engine sounds and hear technical talk about engineering, the music is just in the way.

Love my 02 Boxster S........rides great, sounds great, instant vacation with the top down. Fast enough to get you in trouble and handles like a go cart. The older Boxsters with the flathead 6 cylinder motor will be a classic down the road since they now have a 4 cylinder motor.

How's your IMS bearing doing? I was thinking of buying a Boxster but I'm not so keen on the 8% failure rate that the double bearing Porsche Boxsters have.
@frahmbombfrahmbomb6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how No Brake's IMS bearing is doing but mine is doing great! It was the first proactive bit of maintenance that I did, using the LN bearing kit. That was over six years ago; the car has been absolutely bulletproof!
@llavero56 жыл бұрын
Wrong, 8% is for single bearing (2000-2006) and 1% for double bearing (1997-2000). Seems like Porsche remove one for reduce noise. Probably you can add another ebaring or something if you have a 2000-2006.

My absolute favorite part of this video is that you filmed it while casually driving around with the top down, enjoying your Friday. I have a Boxster, but if I didn't, watching your video would make me want them. Also, I totally agree with everything you said.... these cars are tight in every respect.. cheers from the US.

I have a 99 5 speed, incredible car in every way. The 87-99's have a dual row bearing that rearly fails too and with a muffler delete and good fluids it is a LOT of car for the money. I recommend Bilstien heavy duty shocks(best bang for buck) and Z-Max and Red Line oil and don't be afraid to rev to 6 grand every time you shift. Don't red line it all the time but don't be afraid to shift it higher up though. Awesome car!!!!

I drove the 2.5 and 2.7.on the 2.5 if you are in second gear at 2000rpm and you floor it you will ahead of the 2.7 untill about 80 or 90 kmh because the gears are so close.and the same happens in third gear as well.the only way the 2.7 wins is in a drag race over the quarter mile but in the real world on the street the 2.5 is more fun and sporty

I agree. 986's are great I love the older Porsche style interior and the mid-engined handling. Mine is a 2000 S 3.2 with GT3 alloys, GT3 leather bucket seats and Oettle exhaust.. I love mine too sounds these flat 6's sound amazing. 924's and 944's prices are mental prices and are tbh not as good cars to drive. My uncle had a 2002 Boxster and changed to a 993 911. He said the Boxster drove better. A drivers bargain tbh. Not cheap to run but a driving bargain especially if you can spanner and work on cars yourself :) Boxa.net 986forum have some great enthusiasts who know their stuff. I agree 8/10 with a sports exhaust maybe a 9.5 :) I also have a Honda DC2 Integra Type R and have had a Lancia Evo 2 in the past.
@alsatch_7 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I would love a 993 but money and all that. Yes there are a couple of niggles with the 986, but hey they are getting older now so we have to expect that, and it is also part of the fun. Your spot on about the exhaust, its just not quite there with the standard exhaust so an upgrade may be on the cards, more about that in the 5 things that suck video. Ill get some much hate for that video, but i really just want to point out a few things that arent so great. Coming in a few weeks.

IMS issues? About the same mortality rate as Corona Virus! Mines a 2000. Looks and drives amazing for a 20 year old car. Keep up with oil changes, and drive the crap out of it! IMS? - the good - prices are low if you are buying. The bad - prices are low if you are selling!

Would you say this is a good first car?
@blacksheep75767 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend it as a first car. Maybe a second. The thing with these is, although they're cheap to buy, they still cost a lot to repair. Right off the bat my 996 C4 had a front crankshaft seal leak which resulted in a $4,000 repair with the addition of a clutch since the engine has to be pulled anyway.
@arricammarques19556 жыл бұрын

I have a question. Are the Boxsters (or the overall Porsche brand for that matter) as reliable as some sources claim? A recent survey ranks the Porsche reliability as the second, following the Lexus on the top. I wonder if this is believable to Porsche owners.

the thing why i bought my 2.7l 2003 model is this: i can't afford buying a replacementengine, and the models sub 3liter are least likely to get warped cylinderbores which cause catastrophic engine damage. the ims bearing issue will be adressed with a direct oil feed kit plus new bearing by tunersmotorsport.com oh and since i live in germany, i actually can enjoy the cars topspeed of 252km/h legally, which is quite enough for me.

Sounds like a you problem, not a Porsche problem. These cars run long and strong if they're well maintained by a knowledgeable owner and serviced by Porsche-Certified mechanics when necessary. My money is on the engine failing due to something that was either unnoticed, improperly done or ignored and not because Porsche makes cheap engines that constantly, catastrophically fail.
@victorsong84165 жыл бұрын
@@zerofactor7871 Your willful ignorance is astonishing. After two Miatas (NB and NC) I got a 2004 986. I wasn't aware of the engine-destroying bearing problem when I bought it (44K miles). It has not blew the engine up - yet, but it likely will. It is built crudely. Yes, astonishingly crudely. It is overcomplicated. It is illogical, in fact, some features and acces (and lack of) just plain STUPID. YES, STUPID, German stupid. Porsche should taken apart some successful Japanese cars for guidance how to build a reliable logical construction car. It will accelerate faster than a Miata. But that's it. THAT is ALL. My 2006 NC Miata (only 2 years younger) was a far more sophisticaded car than this. The Miatas also handled BETTER! Yes, better. And the shifter... Oh my god, the 986's shiter is mushy junk compared to the 6 speed super slick short throw NC's shifter. BTW: I sold the Miatas b/c I left the US for 4 years. When I got back in January, I couldn't find any manual NC Miatas in a hurry. Wanna buy a 986? Let me know. I'm going back to the Miata/MX5; they're good for 200K miles - minimum - routinely. It is a CULT car for those, who are mesmerized by the Porsche name. I'm not, and was not, so I see, and WILLING to see the warts...
