There is a KZbin video by a Knight Rider historian that shows how they accomplished the automatic driving, showing how a stunt driver was positioned and camouflaged in the seat. The cool thing is that now self-driving cars are really being made to work for real, and someday they may be street-legal. I can't drive because of my vision, so I would love to be able to climb into a KITT that drives itself and travel around without a driver's license.

I find it fascinating that you made a KITT replica drive itself. The cool thing is that companies like Google are working on full-blown self-driving cars. I'll bet once the technology is perfected and is all street-legal, the Knight Rider fans will buy up the real self-driving cars made out of KITT replicas.

Its pretty difficult to make an 80s car autonomous. Very stiff shifters, power steering is not that good, it takes very strong dc motors and servos to power the steering and shifter. Google is doing this with drive by wire, a lot easier to control then the old school mechanical set ups.

It's also fascinating that so much stuff from science fiction is now real, like when Michael asks KITT to find where a bank robber is likely to strike next, and he finds all the banks in the area. You can ask Siri to find all the banks by voice, and it comes up with a list on the screen just like KITT did.

Do you have KITT's doors remote-controlled? You have to make KITT open the driver-side door to whack a bad guy, making him tumble to the ground, only to have Michael kick him while he's down and beat the living crap out of him. I have to say that those beatings by Michael at the end of every episode crack me up to this day.

My Idea Is Way Different. For My Project KITT, I Would Use All The Auto Pilot Assist, Summon & Sentry Mode, & Ludicrous Speed From A Tesla Model S P100D, The Engine & 8 Speed Automatic Transmission Would Be From A Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. I Would Keep The Interior Front Scanner Bar & Front Bumper Knight Rider Standard.

That is AWESOME! You've created a KITT that is probably more like how KITT was presented on the show than anyone else ever has. Seeing that Trans Am start, move and the shifter move on it's own was just like the fictional KITT was supposed to be able to do. Kind of like seeing a child dream come true. I used to wonder why with the budget they had, why they didn't make KITT remote controlled instead of doing the blind drive technique with the modified seat and controls. With redundant safety shut down mechanisms in place and the streets blocked off it seems viable, though not for some of the stunt driving that Jack Gill did.

You can talk to him and he responds back with an intelligent response and remembers your conversions! I’m very close to having the auto pilot completed. Im hoping this coming week ill be finished. Does the scanner actually 'see' things, is it functional?

Never use GPS to make the car move, far too dangerous and more complex than it needs to be. USe the metric system instead and put sensors on the exterior of the car, parking sensors are great for this if written into the program of the computer. Safer and without a doubt more reliable and effective! If you want to go a step further and don't really mind and can afford spending the extra cash, you can also add external cameras that can also detect objects and can be used to actually guide the car to make turns, recognize faces, signs and pretty much whatever you want it to recognize and do. Tesla follows the same principle!

The gps is only to create waypoints, its not used for object detection. i will use opencv and cameras plus sonar sensors for all that.

Very nice indeed! You mentioned accuracy with the GPS. Have you considered looking at VSS as a second option?

VSS? like vehicle speed sensor? Right now i have the car move to a specific GPS coordinates and stop. I can also have it move for a certain length of time and stop (5 seconds). GPS is accurate to up to 10 ft or so in the video i should have accounted for that.

Vic Knight Yeah vehicle speed sensor is what I meant. Might be a good alternative input should for whatever reason your GPS gives you non-sensical data. Had that sort of thing happen on expensive UAVs and it took off across the road. Love your work.

@@krisssachintha Arduino is a lot faster then a Pi. The Arduino basically does the dirty work, controlling the motors and processing the calculations for the bearing and heading. Its real time processing. A Pi is a mini computer with an Linux OS. I have an on board PC which communicates with the Arduino. I send the Arduino coordinates to travel to.
