What's one of the top 10 reasons teens fail the DMV drive test? Hint: It's Speed Control! While a share of would-be drivers fail their test for driving over the speed limit, five-times more fail their license test from driving too SLOWLY- check it out: • Top 10 Drive Test Fail...
Yes, the seemingly straight forward topic of Speed Control can actually be quite complicated. For example, what if you’re in a school zone on your test, but there are no kids visible? Or what if you’re on a street, flow of traffic is good, it’s a nice clear day, the speed limit is posted 35 mph, but you’re driving 26-27 mph and there are multiple cars behind you, possibly honking their horns? Can you fail? Hmm.
Join Micah and Drivers Ed Direct as they take the often misunderstood concept of Speed Control and break it down into simple terms anyone can understand.

In the area I live, I actually can't drive at the maximum speed limit without getting beeped at or passed on double solid lines... People like to go 60-70 mph on a 55 mph road in the countryside because they can get away with it. You should see them going around corners, there was literally an accident yesterday with someone flying onto the lawn of an Amish family and flipping their car because they couldn't be bothered to slow down around a bend.

Thanks for sharing Dominic. Unfortunately speeding has been an ongoing issue for decades, accounting for well over 25% of all traffic fatalities. Following the speed limit fixes so many other driving issues, it’s unbelievable. When you drive the speed limit, not only is it safer, it gives you more time to process and react to everything going on around you. Further, the roads were designed with the speed limits in mind - like the corner in the road you mentioned where the incident occurred. Thanks for bringing more awareness to this issue and hopefully we can continue to bring the number of speeding incidents and fatalities down.

@@DriversEdDirect I deal with this issue a lot in my area. If I go the speed limit, I stick out like a sore thumb, I almost feel like I'm endangering myself and others by not going with the flow of traffic.

@@marcos45923 Sorry to hear that Marcos, sounds rough! I know that feeling when you're trying to mind the speed limit but it seems like everyone around you is in a hurry and puts that "peer pressure" on you to go faster. Going the flow of traffic is usually a good thing unless you have to break the speed limit to do it. At the end of the day, the speed limits were designed to keep you, other drivers, and pedestrians safe... while other drivers may seem frustrated by your slower-than-the-flow speeds, the safe thing to do is drive at the speed limit without exceeding it. Speeding eventually catches up to most drivers, either in the form of an accident or a speeding ticket. In the long run, you'll be thankful that you don't speed. Thanks for sharing your story Marcos, we love hearing about your personal experiences on the road!

Hello, thank you for this video. with easing up on the accelerator to maintain speed does it mean you don’t press it at all after reaching your desired speed? All you do is just keep your foot on it ?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, you more or less keep your foot on or hovering over the accelerator so that you can maintain your speed, applying or releasing pressure as needed to maintain your speed. How much pressure you do or don't apply will depend on if you are traveling uphill, on a level street, or going downhill. If you are going downhill, you may end up covering the break instead, depending on how steep the slope is. Hope that helps!

Question, I was practicing in a residential zone yesterday and a car was parked in the lane I was driving in. The car was a bit too close before the 4-way stop sign, which didn’t leave me enough space to stop before the stop line. How can I make sure that this won’t make any critical error on my exam? Thanks!
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 жыл бұрын
Oof, that's a tough one! If a car is blocking your driving lane and you have to maneuver around it and travel into the oncoming traffic lane, be VERY careful and be 100% sure that there is no possibility that you'll interfere with oncoming traffic or pedestrians. That's first and foremost. Of course, you want to avoid this situation at all costs and hopefully the car blocking you will eventually move... the last thing you want to do on your test or in real life is travel in the oncoming traffic lane unless it's absolutely necessary. However, if the car is not going to move and you have to make the decision to go, then in your scenario where you cannot stop fully behind the limit line, you must be certain that the crosswalk is 100% clear before you decide to proceed. If you stop over the stop-line and interfere with a pedestrian, you will fail your test that way. With that said, if there are no pedestrians to worry about, the DMV usually only takes 1-point off if you stop on the limit-line or go over it by just a few inches. If you go over the limit-line by a whole foot or two, that's when you may get the critical driving error from the examiner. It's really a tough call becasue there are so many variables at play. At the end of the day, you have to consider the entire traffic situation around you, anticipate any potential problems, and then choose the safest and most reasonable action to take. Hope that helps, really tough quesiton!!

Hello! If you move to CA, you have to get a CA driver's license within 10 days of establishing residency - to do that you will have to fill out a CA drivers license application and take the written knowledge test at the DMV. Hope that helps!

Hi I have a question, if you’re entering a parking lot where the entrance is a bit high, at what pace should I make sure to drive at to avoid colliding with the car that is exiting? Thank you!
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for asking! In general, you want to enter any parking lot at a very slow speed, usually going 5-10 mph - a lot of this depends on the parking lot: how busy it is, how small the traffic lanes are, how tight the turns are, etc. However, there really is no exact specific speed we would recommend when the parking lot entrance is tight and there is another car exiting - the main idea is just to take it as slowly and cautiously as needed to prevent a collision. There may even be times where it is so tight that you have to stop and wait for the other car to fully exit the parking lot entrance before you can proceed. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the video! I just have a question, the driving test on my area has some 15MPH speed bump ahead signs on the 25 MPH residential area, so my question is, I need to reduce my speed to 15 MPH to pass the bump and then recover my speed to 25 MPH and slow again to 15 MPH to the next bump or I need to keep the speed to 15MPH between bumps?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and great question, thanks for asking! You would slow down to 15mph for the bumps (or humps, as they are sometimes called), and then gently accelerate back towards the 25mph residential speed limit after the bump/hump. If there are several bumps very close together (several bumps right in a row), then I recommend not accelerating ALL the way up to 25mph between bumps, as you don't want to keep accelerating and braking abruptly. But it is definitely okay to go over 15mph between bumps. So, to answer your quesiton: in general, you are correct, you can return/recover to the 25mph speed limit after going over the bump at 15mph. Hope that helps!
