All those metal poles on the line from Newport to Sunshine via Brooklyn make me think that it was formerly electrified. Was that the case? Did it have any passenger stations at some point? If so, where?

There was never a passenger service or electrification. The stanchions carried high voltage feeder wires from the power station at Newport to the substation at Albion. 👍😀

Did the controller give you a route on the main at Newport before you arrived then changed it to Brooklyn after you stopped?

Yes, that is correct. We noticed the route was set for the wrong direction and notified the signaller. All was good then. 👍 😀
