The Porsche 911 Carrera Dilemma | Carrera vs Carrera S

The Porsche 911 is one of the most iconic cars ever made, but recently with the increased performance of the base 911 Carrera, making a decision between the Carrera and the Carrera S has become quite the challenge.
Beyond the increase in performance, increase in pricing also plays a major part with lightly spec'd Carrera S models going for well over $110-120K, hence making the base Carrera around $100k seems a little easier to take. But the Carrera S definitely has major advantages over the base Carrera, with the first being acceleration.
The Carrera S on paper doesn't show that much of a power difference, but in the real world, the Carrera S is blisteringly fast and much, much faster than the base Carrera. There are other aspects that i touch on in this review that i hope will help you make a decision on which to buy, the Carrera or the Carrera S.

I drive both often. The S is faster. You overstate how much faster. Car and Driver clocked the base at 3.2 to 60 and the S at 3.0. Doesn’t sound like much much faster to me.

None of what you are saying makes any sense. You didn't give any real indication of the difference between the base and S other than to say the S is faster. You didn't say whether you had PASM suspension or what was the setup on the base vs. the S to indicate whether it was the different suspension setup between the 2 cars you drove or the iterations themselves that accounted for you feeling the S is less compliant. Come on man. Did you just drive this down the road and back again?

I drove a C4S yesterday at the dealership. It was the first time I’d ever driven a Porsche. I absolutely love the size of the 911. I love the seats. I love how it feels so tight and light. I was a bit surprised how loud it was when I got on it but it was loud in a good way. About the only thing I didn’t like was that the gauge cluster (the outside parts) - like the navigation screen is partially hidden behind the steering wheel. I know everyone mentions that in the reviews and it really is dumb. Maybe if it was my car I could position the wheel to make it not so bad. But other than that it’s an amazing car and I think with the economy downturn there is a bit of negotiation room now.

The S is quicker ... but not by much at all. Lots of independent testers see only 0.2 seconds 0-100kmh. The Carrera is much easier to live with (ride comfort) as a daily driver.

When doing a video contrasting the Carrera with the Carrera S it's astounding that you did not mention that the base Carrera isn't available with a manual transmission. That seems like one of the most significant differences to me.

If you get the 911 T in price it's between the base and S model but if you pick the Manuel you get the one from the GT3 and it's much better.

Don't buy the base model they lose their value the most .The 911 t is a good choice as it's instantly an iconic classic .

“Much much faster” ? Seriously ? Most tests indicate the “S” is about 2/10’s quicker to 60. If 2/10’s of a second is “much much faster”……then you’re absolutely correct, the “S” absolutely SMOKES the lowly slowpoke “base.” I’m sure I’m being an overly sensitive “base” owner, but I can’t remember the last time I thought “Damn, I screwed up.” “If I’d only spec’d the “S”, I could have covered that last block a 1/10th of a second quicker.” Of course, if I ever find I just can’t live with myself for the screwup, I’ll go spend a couple of bucks and add 100 hp…..and be “much much quicker”……….THAN THE S !!! Other than blowing snot all over the car, it was a pleasant review.
