From what I gather in the game (been playing it since it came out back in the mid 90's), is the game is brutally hard by default, and meant to be played with 4 players (especially in RPG rules). Then, when it comes to availability, you can use each hero to visit the shop and they would each get to roll on availability (1 hero per day). Depending on what type of settlement you were at, you had better chances of stock number. Lastly, each hero can buy bandanges AND healing potions so you have the best odds for having healing potions. Not to mention that a few characters have the ability to get special items from their unique settlement buildings that allow them to get more healing stuff (like elven/dwarven bread). I would definitely say that the game's main rule is based on how long you hero can stay alive.

Joel, thanks for the review! This brings back such nostalgia for me! I remember loving this game despite the flaws. I just remembered my Wardancer flying around a room of bats and basically taking them all out on one turn. I don't remember any game that stacks up to scratch the same itch.

I really enjoyed this video and you have inspired me to get it out again. One thing you didn't really mention is that you can play this with a Dungeon Master as each of the expansion boxes had included a 3 or 4 session mapped out roleplaying campaign. There was a lot of game in this box. I was a bit mad at you because you didn't like Cursed City but you are totally forgiven now - this is a much better game!

The reason why WHQ and SOB are so good is because WE are in control of the story. They are character campaigns. The truth is, most stories in story based board games suck. They’re written by board game people, who really aren’t great writers. If I want to read a great fantasy story, I’ll read something written by an actual author. The stories we make up for our characters in WHQ and SOB will always be infinitely better than anything in games like Gloomhaven, Middara, Drunagor, etc.

Thanks Joel - a side effect of your review is that you've reminded me I bought the Warhammer Quest video game in a Steam sale ages ago and it's sat in the backlog still waiting to be played. It was only a few pounds so may be worth picking up in the next sale if anyone is interested. However as I've not played it properly yet I can't guarantee that it's anywhere near as good as the board game.

It's a great game, sadly though a lot of the game as far as traveling and town is very much simplified, and isn't really any danger at all. It has the dungeon crawl, but takes the world around the dungeon out. Still if you just want to get straight into the combat it's fantastic. My biggest heart break was that after an IOS update my game no longer works. I can still play on steam, but man I loved to play it on my ipad. Nothing beats original table top experience though.

Love Blackstone fortress. Just purchased a copy of Shadows Over Hammerhal and a set of Cursed City. Looking forward to painting the models and trying them out. I didn’t understand the appeal of fantasy until watching some let’s plays of this 1995 game. Hopefully they reprint something closer to this classic next time. I wonder if people can covert some of these systems into the new games / boards. Thanks for the video

I'm glad you got to play this, it's a great game. It's very easy to pick out it's flaws, but they don't seem to matter. The game is still really fun, maybe partly because of how ridiculous it is. So much memorable stuff happens. I can still remember things that happened in a campaign from 20 years ago. But yes, you learn to save your luck counters for travel and especially town events that can just kill you. Or when you fall off a bridge, but you can also get the wizard the regenerate spell to bring you back from that. The wizard gets really powerful. I think the higher levels would be pretty hard without a wizard. And, of course, getting through that first dungeon is nearly impossible, unless you have a wizard with Healing Hands or get very lucky.

Great video and I think you really give quality insight to why this style of game is special and I agree what you’re saying about it being its own genre separate from many other modern dungeon crawlers. As someone has way too much Shadows of Brimstone stuff, I see the appeal of the smaller table footprint that WHQ provides. I’ve long thought that Shadows of Brimstone would benefit from most of its event and item cards existing in a book form and recording stuff on a character sheet as you play. I’m definitely tempted to put together a pnp project of all this. Also curious if you’ve had a chance to play Darklight Memento Mori? Like Shadows of Brimstone it has some neat updates to the system that are a bit more user friendly. Unlike SOB, the entire game is contained in a base set with two small expansions which makes it much easier to get out and play. It’s hard to come by these days but I recommend checking that out as well.

I played this solo as a kid, I think my first half dozen attempts at a party all died in the first dungeon. As an adult, if I were to go back to this game for a group, I would totally rewrite a bunch of things to make them more fun, as is a GM's prerogative. The wizard should always start with the best healing spell, in fact everybody should start with a free healing potion. Getting rid of non-dungeon death is completely fair, too. While it's a great game, these rules were written fast and loose, there's nothing thought out, or sacred about them. My surviving group of heroes made it all the way to level 5 before I retired my initial solo run, and they managed to never insta-die, though I sweated many rolls where they could have.

Great paint jobs! I think a good house rule to fix the perma death is to add a mechanic to get characters back. Maybe some gold amount times character level gets them back so you'll have a chance to make it happen if you're willing to pay for it.

The roleplay book has sooooo many adversaries not included in the game. You had to go out and get the models to expand. Me and my old crew did it for Heroquest, we saw the relation, we knew back then that the gargoyle in HQ was a Bloodthirster in Warhammer. Nowadays I'm still buying Games Workshop models like Nighthaunt and just the newer stuff from AOS. I now have Bloodletters and better chaos warriors, better goblins and skaven, home made foam board tiles and yeah......Transform cursed city into what you want.

Great job on the review and explanation of the game! I have a copy of the game myself and many of the expansions/extra characters too. I'm definitely going to be looking at the links though because my books are very worn/pages falling out etc as things age harsher the more they're used and I ABSOLUTELY love this game and every friend I've introduced it to has loved it just as much! I agree on several things you mentioned as "House Rules" such as removing the Cave In Event card and sharing gold to help level up fellow party members. We use IOU's or just trade treasure items of equal value. Whatever works. When going back to town, whenever we hit an event that says you got lost or get stuck going to a dinky village we just add 6 weeks back to the journey to keep looking for the City. And then as far as healing up warriors that have hit 0 hit points, as long as the warrior's HP reaches 1 before the next Power Phase begins he's alive. So if the Wizard casts a healing spell or someone can chuck a potion, they're good.

Nice video… WHQ does some great things. You brought up AHQ briefly and I would encourage you to look at that one. It’s true that when released WHQ was the clear option over AHQ however as your video points out fan made content have modernized the game and really helped to augment a great system. The same is true for AHQ and I would go so far as to say that the base systems for AHQ are A LOT better., and just as they do for WHQ , fan made content for AHQ has propelled the game light years ahead of when it was released. Heroes are always in peril and combat is a lot more tactical. The D12 system is just fantastic!!

I think I disagree about the game being better played solo. NOPE this game may be good solo, but it is fantastic with friends. I do wish there was a modern app like for the new Hero Quest etc that would play the part of the DM so to speak so all players can play co-op. To play with people I think you need a minimum of 3 people (1 to DM and the other 2 players each play 2 characters) or five so that you have the DM and exactly 4 players. If you do more then or less then 4 characters though it's not going to be balanced. The game is very much tweaked to play as it is set up. To me the best part of this is the love of miniatures and Warhammer lore. It's a great way to fall in love with miniature hobbies...and allows you to build your collection, and have that directly impact your game world. You also will find yourself investing gating many more factions of that world then you would playing just Warhammer FB, or 40k. Usually in those games you have one main army which you tend to hyper focus on. Where as in WHQ you eventually want to fill out that random table, and you collect a little of everything. That was incredibly intimidating back when it came out on a minimum wage teenager budget. However in todays world of 3d printing etc it's just an excuse to paint and build more miniatures and learn more about the different factions as you go. I think GW would be smart to A) re-release these Rules as "Warhammer Quest Classic" ..and not try and re-invent it. Keep it true to original as Hasbro did with HQ. B) Then re-release the monster table models in a plastic form that matches the old aesthetic and comes with matching monster cards for levels. This game gives people more reason to collect a wide variety of minis then any of the other games did really. C) Hire that LM guy. He understands this game better then the original creators. GW is sitting on a goldmine IP and lets it waste away at best, and at worst completely ruins it with the new Quest series that completely missed the entire point of the game.

Dungeon saga is closer to heroquest than warhammer quest. Only with the adventurers companion does it add random dungeons, monster AI, custom characters etc. To me warhammer quest is better because of the random elements and story telling but if you want a 1 vs many that's not randomly generated and not hard to play then dungeon saga is a great game.

I looked for a post like this about 3 or 4 years ago as the wife owned the full game when we get married and one of the things that got us together was both our love f ou r board games and PC FPS games. We still own the full 1995 Warhammer quest game. It still in almost mint condition even with the hours and hours we and friends have played on it. But been looking for a way to get all the expansions for it and even player made one with some better custom rules to allow make the game more difficult as most will tell you if you have experience playing the game it becomes easy even with perma death. Plus want some access to all the expansions and all the other heroes that have been released without spend over a few $1000. So this DIY is perfect. Its allows me to put some money in basic models that not necessarily by GW just something that matches the size and fits the look and let's me buy at a reasonable price without the crazy gouging going on with this game that other new games with large mini sets and everything else that would match the price of Warhammer quest that is so over priced on the market that it crazy. I dont understand why GW doesn't just remake the game with just a couple simple rule fixes and make it slightly more difficult and could release it at 1/3 the price being asked for it right now even used missing a couple of things and still make a huge profit and could even have the mini colored and still would still at 1/3 of avg online asking cost to walk away with very large profit. I have had a old friend that happened to buy it long ago on my recommendation that at the time cost him $250 and spent another 75 for new unopened addon and $100 on another one. He sold it unopened few months ago because he really needed the money and hadn't played the game at all since he got it. He sold it no joke new unopened for over $4500 with the two addons and a couple of magazine addons in bag he found on ebay. That seemed like crazy to me but I can't even find a full used edition with a 1 addon that is even close to under $700 with most of the time missing a few pieces or the cardboard rooms or passageways are clearly pulling apart and after he sold it for that price he had poeple sending him mmessages for the next 7 or more months trying to see if he had anymore just unoped new base sets that they would be willing to pay him the $4500 just for it.

@@DriveThruReview This is going to help me so much as I been wanting to upgrade the game as a gift for the wife as I know how much she loves playing it. I think we have more money invested in GW paints that we got to paint all the miniatures which we used all up and still have about have to go than she did buying the game brand new and after loving it she bought the orc expansion and few of the hero addons with their card from GW. which back when it all came out I think she invested maybe $80 in the game new unopened with unopened orc expansion and few extra hero miniatures now days all that new unoped could fetch most likely $5k on open market so needless to say I cant drop and refuse to drop close to $400 on just a simple expansion that is used or over paying for Heros when I could just 3d print or order one that looks almost the same or sometimes in my mind fits the idea of what the character should look like. All I need then is stat card which from what I you seam to be saying can be found online so little redigns on my part to not violate any copyright just redo the image to better fit the new miniatures and already have highend photography level laser printer which got from a company going out of business for only $300 and at the time it was saling new for $30k and the bankruptcy company saling all this stuff off didnt have any background in IT what so ever. So i also got some pc hardware and a server I sold off for 5x what I paid. The printer can print around 5k full page photos before needing a new printer cartridges which the very large black is most expensive at $30 with the other 5 costing $10 each online. Got to the love laser printers and companies that sale laser printer ink at a real price of what it's worth as long as I send them my old ones. We have companies like HP and few others for that charge for ink "not laser resign which is different" more per once than gold claiming its specialty ink. Yeah its specialty ink because you made it harder to copy for your customers to get a fair price on ink. So the only special about it is its F you ink that we want to charge like its gold because the sold you POS printer at the lost price possible and they are trying to make up that loss and way more on ink sales. But here is a trick if you ever need a good scanner for photos look at really cheap photo prints that have scanners builtin and just look at the scanner stats and stay with well known companies find the best, fastest, highest res, color quality, works with all the best scanning software or comes with high end scanning software, even maybe a top level photo editing software with scanning software in it, is USB C, and buy it. You will be getting most liking around 85% off the price of the scanner alone not to include the 1000s you maybe saving on software. You can use up the ink as starting cartages only have small amount. This is the company to making up that huge loss they just took on the hardware as fast as possible. But you didn't buy it to have a printer, you got it to have highend photo quality scanner, really good scanner software maybe even highend photo software for fractions of the price that just happens to have a junk print that drinks that ink up like a hog. But you don't need the printer you wanted a good scanner and that's what you got for a fraction of the cost. Sorry went way off topic. But anyway my printer can print on hard packed cardboard with nice printing surface. So will make sure its sized right dimensions and print then cut off scarp on cutting board or use very fine edge cutter on drimel at medium speed as to not cause any breaking. You can also due this by using good masking tape that wont tear or pull off ink. You got me reall excited to get started. Going to start going over what I have after doing some reading on all the links you provided and find whatever else I can. Thanks again this video has been a great help.

I think I may have mentioned that in this video or in my other video, but ya. I don't do anything "advanced" until the party levels up one character. Get a win or two under your belt, and then start to add in the monster tables and what not. But... even then!!... I've had party of 2s and 3s etc... wipe. Also, don't be afraid to bail out of a dungeon. The rules for that are in the big RPG book I think. Bail out, go back to town, if you feel iffy about proceeding. But... even then!!!... you might lose some folks. I also like to have a few different parties going.. and then if I lose a character or two.. I pull characters from different parties together. I look at it like one larger party.. but only four go out at a time.

@@DriveThruReview Thanks for the support. I didnt want to get to level two before going to the advanced rules, hoping to land somewhere shy of leveling up. Im not afraid to house ruling but I really appreciate what people say about this game, that the brutality is a big part of what makes it so special and exciting. Really want to be careful about making it 'safe' XD Thanks so much for the ongoing support Joel.

@@goodjessehobbies Ya. The problem is that the game kind of kicks your face in until you get a little bit of "Luck", good items, and unlock some of your character specials. You could just house rule "no minotaurs" for a bit ;)

Great review as always Joel! Looks like there’s a lot of PnP stuff available. If I’m looking on eBay to pick this up, what’s the original stuff I need that I can add the PnP and have a complete game? I won’t be spending complete copy money on eBay for this but willing to make a project out of it.

Honestly, you could just proxy up the whole thing if you really wanted to. The only original things I have left are the models, the books, and the little tokens. The big boards and all the cards and character cards and tokens are all custom printed. But really, you could just print the books and use whatever models (and tokens) you wanted too. I have thought about pawning off the books and just printing those as well. I have this Epson Eco printer, so it's extremely cheap for me to print stuff in good quality. Otherwise, it would be cost prohibitive.

@@DriveThruReview Thanks a lot for the video. I am a bit overwhelmed by all the cards and files etc... Trying to get my WHQ started (playing the new HQ atm, but want something more indepth and complex). I tried to find some fitting minatures/models but it seems I can only buy Age of Sigmar ones. I don't mind an updated look, but it seems really hard to just finde 12 bats or rats (but maybe I just don't know where to look in Germany).

@@DriveThruReview Ah that would be amazing :) I started to check out all the ressources you posted... its tremendous help, but a bit overwhelming content wise. I also would love if you could tell what cardsize/features we should choose when having the cards reprinted in the recommended store, because its quite difficult get all the info. I also tried to find miniatures/models which suit WHQ. Its also really difficult (even simple things like bats and rats). I am starting with HeroQuest now and will practice painting on these miniatures and then slowly transition to WHQ. Happty to wait for the video :) and thx a lot.

While not a board game, how would you say the storytelling qualities of Warhammer Quest compare to Rangers of Shadowdeep?
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. They are kind of two different beats. Rangers is more narrative on rails, but that's doing it a disservice. There's a lot of variability to the missions because of the card deck/event mechanic. I think an open world sandbox style game that was more miniature skirmish in nature could be an interesting idea. Randomly generating tiles is a lot easier than generating "terrain" though :)
@harrymcfann6853
@harrymcfann6853 2 жыл бұрын
@@DriveThruReview That makes a lot of sense. The whole sandbox narrative quality of Warhammer Quest has always been a big draw for me, as well as the "filling in the gaps" nature that you also pointed out. I may just have to get Shadows of Brimstone.
@DieNische
@DieNische 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting review. Thanks. But according to Brimstone: Playing with the Permadeath hardcore rules, Brimstone, especially with 2 heroes, kicks your face in on vanilla level very easily and is not balanced that well with Minecart content. Flesh Stalker +Drones+ Undead Army = Wipeout. :D So I disagree that Brimstone fixed that aspect. ;)
@DriveThruReview
@DriveThruReview 2 жыл бұрын
Well. The "regular" rules don't have you dead dead. You roll for the Injury or Madness charts... which you could get healed depending on the injury etc...
@DieNische
@DieNische 2 жыл бұрын
@@DriveThruReview True. But the optional rules in the official rulebook have the permadeath option included where you have to get revived (on a map tile without monsters) before your next activation starts. If you fail to achieve that, your character is dead. Forever. :D
