Join Jared and his friend Henry as they embark on an epic 4500-mile road trip in a 1966 Chrysler New Yorker. After working on the car for just one day, the duo hit the open road and take on a sports car rally that they've failed to finish every time they've entered as a team.
As they travel across the country, Jared admits to making a huge mistake buying the car just for its engine. What could that mistake be? Tune in to find out!
With breathtaking scenery, unexpected challenges, and a few surprises along the way, this is a road trip you won't want to miss. Will Jared and Henry finally conquer the rally and cross the finish line, or will their hopes be dashed once again? Watch to find out!

As a 15 year veteran of the Auto Parts business, It is fairly easy to get the right bearings and possible races if they need replaced. They all have their part numbers stamped on them. And if worse comes to worse, A parts guy with the right skills can root through the parts catalog and find them by dimensions. Use to do those and Air and Oil filters quite often. Nothing like looking up parts for farm tractors and Semis. But was actually one of my favorites of my job. And don't destroy the great piece of history

Early in the Gtr dual clutch transmission days I’ve played the bearing games. You’d end up on your 7th cross reference to finally find an available part. Ultimately the spindle was trashed, actually bent! It’s back up and running down the road with a knee spindle assembly

I got my parents’ 66 Chrysler New Yorker in high school in ‘72 with 101,000 miles on it and drove it through college, got it up to 166,000 miles on the original engine by 1978. Loved that car. It had 100% power steering which took getting used to. Went into the Army stationed overseas so sold it for only $150. Wish I still had it!

I really enjoyed this series of videos. It is too bad that the wheel bearing failed. I hope to see more of the New Yorker in the future. I think it is a cool looking car even if it is 4-doors. My suggestion for its future is to possibly swap in a 6.1L Gen 3 Hemi into it.

My first car in 1974 at 17 years old, and a senior in HS, was a 1966 Chrysler 300 2 door hardtop. A beautiful dark green car that was in excellent condition. Had the 325 hp 383XP engine. Paid $600 for it and drove it for 9 years doing ALL the maintenance myself. I loved the part where you said your Chrysler got 17 mpg on the highway. That's exactly what mine got on the highway, all the time. Single digits in the city however. Couldn't help but drive with a heavy right foot. Loved the sound the secondaries made when you stomped on it.

Jared. When I was a teen in highschool. My oldest brother drove a '72 fully loaded yacht newyorker❤ He had it lowered with an airbag set up. Later my very first car ever was an '85 5th avenue fully loaded. My brother and I stripped the engine down to and top end swapped her to a 4 barrel carb straight pipes out the back. And put a 2 inch lowering kit on it to take the body roll out. I miss the old yachts. Please do this beauty right. Make sumthin of the old girl. Onna nuther note. As a man who grew up in Toombs county. 80s and 80s. I really touches my heart and soul that you champion for mental health. ❤❤❤❤❤ thank you so very much.

My ex's family and I drove across the country in '79, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. to San Fransisco, CA. We left with 2 cars. One had a full going over. Wheel bearings, brakes, four new Firestone 721 tires, full service, "The Works." Mine was a '68 Delta 88. I put on a trailer hitch, and four re-tread tires, and filled the tank. The other car had two tires blow out on it before we got out of Florida. I mean, the 721s turned into balls of steel wool. Next, my car got run off the road just outside Mobile, AL. Into the ditch, rolling the U-haul trailer 360 degrees and landing it back on its wheels. The tongue twisted my new hitch and center-punched my trunk lock. Good thing I got the insurance! Back on the road the next day with another U-haul and a rental trailer hitch. A couple days later, around 1:00 am, we were on I-10 passing thru Texas, and the left front wheel bearing on the other car failed spectacularly. The brake disc, hub, and bearing cap all glowing bright orange, sparks flying. The driver managed to get it to the nearest rest stop. We got it towed into town and found a hotel for the night. The next morning we checked in with the garage, and the entire spindle, hub, rotor, and wheel were all no longer "separate" parts but welded together into one large unserviceable lump. No parts to be had for days, so my sister-in-law sold it to the garage for cash to cover towing and the hotel bill. All seven of us (5 adults and 2 young kids) piled into my car and made it to CA. The moral of the story is, since then, I've never touched wheel bearings on a personal car unless they were bad. No repacks or adjustments, nothing. And I've never had a wheel bearing fail yet! p.s. I became a mechanic in '82 and eventually earned ASE Master Auto Mechanic status (A1-A8, L1) which are still current.

Yared, nice trip, not perfect, but you enjoyed it. Good for your mind! The New Yorker: Find another engine with transmission and leave it as it is. Or use the engine and transmission first and repair the New Yorker at another time later. Your health is everything. I am 74 and had a heart attack on January 2nd. I drove with my wife (she does not have a driver's license) to the local emergency room here on the island of Gran Canaria. On my further journey to the hospital I was in an ambulance for the first time and had to undergo all kinds of examinations in the hospital for 10 days. Virtually nothing was found. I was given 8 kinds of medicines for a year and went to my doctor because the medicines made me feel bad. Now I have two more and feel great. A lot of walking here in the mountains is tiring, but very healthy, my dog sometimes doesn't want to come along because I walk a lot, haha. Think about your health eat fresh, not prepared food. Greetings and all the best with you

I drive a 1966 four door Buick Special here in Georgia. I named her after the original owner and have loved her since I bought her. She has become my daily driver and I can't tell you how many people come up to me just to check it out every time I stop for gas. These old cars are the unsung heroes that bring back such positive memories. Most of the people that come up to me recall fondly sitting in the back during some great road trip, or some awesome family vacation, or even just going to the sore with mom in the "ole grocery getter". Everyone says the same thing " man I wish I had that car now." or "I wish we never got rid of it!" As far as your car goes, I would turn it into the ultimate cross country road trip car. You now know everything that it needs to make it reliable and comfortable. I say buy a sticker from every state, keep it rolling, keep it making memories and pass it on to the next person who will cherish those times. . . that is the magic of these old cars.

Putting an electric motor in the New Yorker would be a great way to keep the dream alive for the car. I still think you can put 'gears' on an electric motor... Maybe that would be a worthy challenge.
@tei1337
@tei1337 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can mate an electric motor to a gearbox, but they generally don't need it. I believe here are a few bolt on EV- conversion kits that just use the original transmission. Pretty sure I've at least seen beetles with that setup. Good thing about those kind of kits is that it's totally reversible, just unbolt the ev stuff and bolt back the original drivetrain.

I can't believe I actually was in Winslow Arizona in 1995 towing a race car hauler, all my tools, '72 Trident motorcycle, books, personal belongings etc. & did not even know I was close to this place that I damn sure would have detoured to see. Here's how you get those bearings without knowing the application. Remove them and get the numbers & brand of the manufacturer off the races and find a bearing outlet that can match the bearings by number, not application. I once paid an exorbitant amount of money for a bearing set to convert a 1970 Triumph Bonneville front neck from the individual ball bearing triple tree set-up on the drum brake front end it came with, to tapered roller bearings to mount a '78 disk brake front end on my old bike. Then when I converted other old bikes for other guys, I just used the Timken numbers I had written down and just went to my local bearing outlet and bout the bearings I needed for much less than the conversion kit. Put in a Y block 318 (I used to have a dual 4 bbl manifold for that motor, but it's long gone now), 413 (dual carb version) or a 392 hemi & keep it on the road.

Drop a 360 in it and use it. I'm sure you can find someone (you) who can get similar horsepower and torque to that 440 out of a small block dodge with modern induction.

Some may say it’s lame or boring but hemi swap it! Understand 1 simple truth, many people love 4 door classics! When you have youngsters you want to enjoy your hobby with it makes it way easier to enjoy family time in a 4 door. Plus being cheaper to start with, 4 doors work well for that family man to get into the muscle/classic car hobby if they’re on a limited budget. I wish people would stop downing 4 doors and start enjoying them since everyday those old cars are harder to come by. 2 extra doors don’t change the fact it’s still a 60 year old vehicle!! I’m glad you showed that they can still make great memories regardless of the number of doors.

I love that car (apart from those wheels), I think it needs to stay as it is and just keep searching for another big block for the other project.

From the 1st episode when you said you were going to roadtrip it, I felt that your were going to get attached. Get an LS truck motor and throw it in. cheap-ish, relativity straightforward with the amount of swap kits out there, and you get a nice cruiser with a good story that you can hop into and drive whenever you want

Love the video and all the content you do Jared. I know that you are into the petrol motors and I love that, but my suggestion for the New Yorker is this. What if you did a Collab series with @ageingwheels and turned it into a EV, mixing the old with the new? As someone who suffers with mental health problems, knowing that you need help and knowing who you can turn to for help is a major issue. I know that the whole awareness of this side of health issue is getting bigger but, seeing people that I enjoy watching promoting this stuff is a big benefit to me as it makes me know that I am not alone out there. Thank you for the great video's and content. Keep up with all your amazing work :)

That New Yorker is cool, my view, if you make it your daily driver/parts car it will be cool to the rest of us. That trunk is huge mate. Cheers 🇨🇦

It's a cool car. I would rethink pulling it apart. If you must, then think unusual... A 4BT Cummins would fit in there and you would crank mileage in the 20s. It would be very unusual and definitely a head turner. As far as the environmental stuff...keeping older cars on the road is extremely environmentally conscience. The longer it is on the road the smaller its carbon foot print gets. The 4BT is used in everything from skid steers to forklifts to diggers to delivery trucks to boats. Any heavy equipment auctions can yield a descent 4BT. If you can find one in a delivery truck then you get the trans and adapter plates.

It certainly has enough room for batteries... ...dammit, now I'm imagining it with a dual motor setup. How about an AWD '66 New Yorker that can do four-wheel burnouts?

How about a resto-mod to electric conversion. Not sure of the budget to do something like this but what a great platform to do it and something new to learn.

As I said in the previous video, throw in a cheap 383, truck 361, whatever old big block mopar u can find. Cheap 2 barrel carb and make it a Highway cruiser Staying big block will make it a easy swap than trying t find brackets, pulleys and accessories to fit a small block or other engine. Keep it simple is the best way when doing projects way down the list otherwise they never get done.

Great Big Ride, I traded a 1959 Nash Metropolitan for a 66 Chrysler just like this car when I was in high school. Strange trade but the Chrysler was the same color as yours but sat in a screened car port for years. The car cleaned up extremely nice and I gave it to my mother and she drove it for about 10 years. The old 383 sounded awsome and everything worked including. A/C.

Jared, as an obviously biased Mopar enthusiast this is the car to go PRO LUXURY! Matt Graves @ American Powertrain set the bar high with his LS-powered Coupe DeVille. We're building a 505cui '70 Fury III convertible! Source a 6.4L HEMI, team up with Holley and have this machine at MoParty in September to participate in the Grand Master Challenge that Mopar Connect sponsors?
