Those extremely expensive gas cans are mandated by the EPA. They rarely work and cause more spills than the old style ever did.

I'm fortunate to be able to spend lots of time outdoors for my work (I'm typing this while sitting in Iceland, for work). I plan to go back to AK many more times. I'd love to find the time to drive the Alcan, either to or from home (Utah). This has been a great series to watch. Kudos!

First time I saw one of these was when I was fueling up at a Costco back when they were over $100K. I thought it was stunning visually then and still do. The design hasn’t really aged much. Still looks like a supercar. With its supercar car styling, under a five second 0-60 time and AWD not really too far from specs of some modern day “super cars”! The Mini’s 3 cylinder gas engine though does not fit those supercar specs!😂 But being a hybrid with this tiny engine, beats many a supercars’ gas mileage!
@Cloud30000
@Cloud30000 4 ай бұрын
I’m betting that better electric motors and batteries will come out that can be retrofitted on this thing to bring the 0-60 under 3 seconds over the next 10 years, as long as the rest of the drivetrain can handle the torque, while still getting all the range benefits from the engine and the timeless supercar styling, it just sucks that the carbon fiber can’t be repaired and a small fender bender is enough to total the car.

I drove the Al-Can back in 1977, when most of it was gravel. I was in a new Ford Pickup, loaded with anti-freeze, traveling in a convoy of RVs driving from South Bend, IN, to Anchorage, AK, where the Dealer, Bill Niles, sold Fords and Coachmen RVs. Took us 9 days to travel the entire route because we diverted onto logging roads in British Columbia. That was so the Dealer/Owner could show his 70-year old-ish father, from Tennessee, the sights along the way -- the dad had never been to Alaska before this trip. Most of the distance after entering the Canadian Rockies was gravel road, or much worse. We ran logging roads in BC that were closed during weekdays, but would re-open for regular vehicle travel some evenings and on weekends. In northern BC, just short of the Yukon Territory, my truck ran out out of gas. We always filled up at every opportunity, but mine was the one vehicle in the convoy with the smallest gas tank (28 gallons, if I recall). Took us an additional 5-6 hours for another vehicle to go ahead and procure some gas to put into my vehicle's tank so that I could make it to the next fuel station in northern British Columbia or Yukon Territory (I don't remember which). On one gravel bridge over a river there was a Regular Cab Dually Pickup driving extremely fast towards me while my vehicle was halfway across the gravel bridge. I pulled over to the right as far as I could, and stopped when I could feel the gravel crumbling under the Pickup's right side tires. That Dually Pickup that was coming at me shot by and its Driver's side mirror smacked into my Truck's Driver's side mirror and completely shattered it. The Dually just kept blasting along the Gravel Bridge/Road and never looked back. That trip was an adventure!

This is the trip/route TFL should be testing their TRUCKS on... not Romans nostalgic low rent "supercar" from BMW that basically nobody even remembers or cares about. The Grenadier... the Tacoma, the Ranger Raptor.. literally any truck or SUV you've owned would have been a better idea than this honestly. If they really wanted to test out truck suspensions, tires, seat/ride comfort this is the route they really should try doing instead of keeping them in Colorado for 2 months and calling it "long term testing"

some of these newer gas cans may have an extension-pipe piece that's submerged from the neck of the can. to use uncap, invert the pipe, and retighten cap. very finicky because the cap is a ratchet tab design now. if you put it on crooked gas spills out but the ring feels tight!

Oil is pumped out of the ground there, but it's traded on the open market and becomes market priced. After that, it's refined and shipped, and scale tips the price some more. Since Alaskan cities are low population and relatively remote, the scale is horrible. That all drives up the price.

Probably the same with your gas-washed clothes. We do it for fish guts. No deer in the part of the world you're traveling. No elk for a long time either. Carrying a gas can in a vehicle is so foolish! You’re breathing fumes, you smell, a random spark from an electrical connection could be fatal, and in an accident you’d be cremated.

Start of vid prediction. They'll never need the extra gas, tools, or flat tire stuff. But they will complain the entire way about the gasoline smell, and find some way to blame that on someone else. And.... go!

In the name of “safety” they’ve made gas cars way more dangerous, I’ve never once spilt fuel with the regular style that everyone’s father has, and I’ll be keeping them instead of replacing them, i’m always grabbing old ones from the end of peoples driveways, once they’re gone we will be stuck with the modern shit
