It is. Allowing longer driving times twice a week and all that. Totally stupid. It needs to be 9 hours a day maximum. And then it contridicts itself by saying you can do a 13 hour shift in 24 hours but can reduce the rest to do 15 hours of shift for 2 days. Totally stupid. It needs to be the same hours every day. Safer, less chance of errors and easier to work with. What idiot designed these hours?
@schnozz872 ай бұрын
You get used to it, it's definitely more complicated than it needs to be but when you do it every day it becomes second nature and you have little ways to make it work. It's also better than having no rules in place because companies would abuse drivers' hours constantly, make people drive more hours than is safe and there would be accidents all the time.

Technically a lorry load of manure was treated better than a driver of passengers. How to do away with moral and feeling appreciated in one fell swoop.

One serious safety issue which is never addressed is the abuse of agency drivers rest time. Companies just like Asda think nothing of calling up the agency at 4 or 5 in the afternoon requesting for a driver to cover a night shift. The agency then call numerous drivers until they get someone who is prepared to stay up all night without any sleep to take on a 12 hour shift. This practice should have been outlawed many years ago but goes on every single day with some of the UKs biggest trucking companies and agencies. The remedy is very simple and should be set by law. Agency drivers who maybe required to work on a night shift should be advised at the end of the previous week that they are on standby for the following week and paid for each shift even if they are subsequently not required. It should be unlawful for an agency to supply a driver for a nightshift who is not on a formal paid standby rota and hasn't been given at least 48 hours notice of the nightshift. Trucking companies wouldn't do it to their permanent drivers but think nothing of expecting an agency driver to stay up all night without any sleep. Unfortunately, this extremly unsafe practice has fallen through the cracks of driver hour laws for many years and has always made a mockery of the UKs alleged strict stance on driver hours and rest time.

By law (The Working Time Regulations 1998), employees and workers have the right to the following rest: during the working day - 20-minute rest break if they're expected to work more than 6 hours during the day. between working days - 11 hours' rest between finishing work and starting work. unfortunately workers/drivers are like prostitutes and money is the drug they give you when they want you to forget about your basic rights and freedoms.

As someone who drove for many years under UK/EU rules before becoming a road train truck driver Down Under, I can confirm that UK driving hours are nothing short of complete nonsense. In Australia there is no difference between driving and other work, allowing a basic day of 12 hours which is inclusive of all work performed regardless of whether its driving or other work. I'm sure that the general public in the UK would be astonished to learn that an alleged fatigued driver who may have already driven 9 hours, could effectively undertake a further 5 hours of Other back breaking tiresome work, possibly unloading the truck by hand, before then being allowed to utilise a final hour of driving. Its about time that the UK government finally addressed the issue of Other Work because as most drivers will tell you, they are far more likely to be fatigued after conducting other work than they are from actually driving the truck. Simply make it an all inclusive day of work regardless of what work is being performed.
@xj3586 жыл бұрын
@@paulway5045 Yes, from my experience the UK/EU try to portray that they are very tough on the hours people can drive but when you throw in the ridiculous amount of other work also allowed within the same day, then it makes a mockery of the of that alleged tough position. Here in Australia drivers can also work up to 15 hours a day if they have completed a fatigue management program and the vehicle operator is also enrolled in fatigue management operations which requires live in cab monitoring. If not, it's then just a basic 12 hour day. Further to that, if you stay within a 100km radius of your base, then there is no log book or recording of driver hours required. You are still only allowed to work for 12 hours but you don't have to actually record anything.
@ahorsewithnoname6436 жыл бұрын
In NZ it used to be 11 hours driving and 3 hours work in a 24 hour period. They scrapped that because to many were driving in work time (paper log books). Now its 13 hours with 2x 1/2 hour breaks (max 5 1/2 hour continuous) followed by 10 hours off. After 6 days you must have a break of 24 hours minimum to reset your hours.
@garyhewitt4896 жыл бұрын
Yep Drivers hrs is bull Noone seems to realise how much work you can be expected to do and how the break times abused so they just actually extend your working day. Example Leave 7am Drive very short distance take 15 mins for coffee. Then drive/work 4.5/6 hrs . Take 30 mins food toilet phone the Mrs. So now it's 13,45. Drive work another 4.5 /6 hrs. Now it's 19.45. If your not parked yet take another 45 minutes break 20.30 Drive another HR 21.30 Trust me your knackered. Start again in 11 hrs time probably having spent the night with trucks pulling in out all night and that effing fridge unit parked next to you blaring away all night
@johnnydollars17155 жыл бұрын
Johnny G That would be a fantastic idea and easier for drivers too, but it’s not about trying to simplify the working/driving hours it’s about profiteering from the working man/woman. If I was to drive a delivery van with tacho exemptions from Lands End to John O Groats I can do that quite freely without any bother from the authorities and return the same day if I wish. Madness🤯🤯🤯
@Buckblacket4 жыл бұрын
You make it sound like all drivers are 'handballing' 30 tonne loads as their 'other work' hours. The truth is however, the other work almost always consists of waiting in queues etc much of which is spent on the bunk.

The explanation for the working time breaks are incorrect on the last scenario. If you working day is between 6-9 hours a break or breaks of at least 30 minutes must be taken. If your working after 9 hours then a further 15 minutes before you under take more work. In the last scenario it clearly shows a 10 hour shift with only 15 minutes of break illegal.
@johnfreeman82564 жыл бұрын
Paul Frankcom You are wrong. The video is correct. If u work over 9 hrs u must take breaks totalling 45mins. These can be taken in blocks of 15 mins as long as it’s not at the start or end of your shift and as long as u don’t work for more than 6hrs in one go. Regards.
@paulfrankcom714 жыл бұрын
@@johnfreeman8256 Hi John, if you freeze the video at 4 minutes 33 seconds the wkd senario clearly shows 6hwork 15break 4h work 15 break. Thats 10hours not nine.That's what I was referring to. On my explanation I'm correct. Regards Paul.
@johnfreeman82564 жыл бұрын
Paul Frankcom hi. Your still not correct. It doesn’t matter about 9 or 10 in this scenario as long as u stick to the rules. If u watch between 3:26-4:10 it states the rules for wtd. Can someone please tell me what breaks I need to be taking if I drive a class 2 skip truck. I usually get to 6hrs working time directive before my driving hours are up. So then I have a 45 minute break which then rests my driving hours. Then I work another 5-5.30 mins working time directive but only around 3-4hr driving do I need to take another break ? So I nearly or get really close to 12hr days

Been driving 17 years n never done mega hours. Until now, it seems massively over complicated. Is this just so we mess up and they can fine us?. Just keep it simple!. Love driving but hate all these rules.

That's EXACTLY what it is for. Confuse you to get money from you and the operator/company.

Technically speaking, aren't drivers actually resting during periods of availability?
@Chris-fy8rk6 жыл бұрын
YEs in a way but, im not enjoying my spare time in a small office with 15 other drivers moaning about late trailers
@English.Andy16 жыл бұрын
For that reason I never POA. Pointless mode that doesn’t make sense. You either working or you’re not (resting)
@tonybutler82633 жыл бұрын
Not really. What this vid doesn't show is that you can only use POA if the time on POA is known in advance. For example, if I turn up at an RDC and there's a big queue I can ask the office staff how long I'm going to be waiting. If they say "2 hours", I can POA for 2 hours. If they say "dunno mate", I can't use POA. Same as a breakdown, if my office tells me they'll get a mechanic out to me in 90 minutes, I can use POA; if they say they'll get to me as soon as possible, then I can't use POA. In both of the above cases, I will need to stay with the vehicle, and it therefore cannot be classed as rest.

Please can anybody explain me how is it possible to work 13-14 hours a day, I met sono drivers who do it 🤔
@paulconstantin47605 жыл бұрын
You can work 15 hours a day , two days a week . In this 15 Working hours you will include break time 9h driving time ( which can be extended to 10h driving T just for two days a week) other works ( hammers ) or period of availability . Doing so you have to take now a reduced 9hrs daily break ( h bed time ). 15+9 = 24 hrs . If you work 13h and one second it will consider 15h day . 13h work time + 11 hrs regular daily break = 24 hrs day .
@paulconstantin47605 жыл бұрын
In this video they didn't mention that we can split the regular daily rest of 11h in two . 3 h of unetrrupted bed time + 9 hrs of bed time at the end of the day

Please can anybody tell me if it is legal to work 6 hours a day Monday to Friday in a job that is not a driving job and then to drive a lorry every Saturday?
@Mircea0205 жыл бұрын
If in your contract says you're a truck driver but you only do other work and just a day a week you drive , by the end of the shift you must get your hands on a digital tachograph and make a manual entry with your activity ; in the given circumtances - other work.

So to sum up take a break when the law says and not when your tired, thirsty or hungry, Of course you can take a break when your tired, thirsty or hungry, you just have to explain it during your disciplinary and who knows, you may get away with it 'once'.
@voice.of.reason2 жыл бұрын
If I do not get a job doing a straightforward run of 8 or 9 hours a day and home for tea I'm not becoming a lorry driver for any money. If you only do 8 -9 hours (including 'other work') 5 days a week then you don't have to worry about all this bullshit.

And don't work more than every other Saturday or Sunday, don't have another job If you're doing night work you will need to opt out of Working Time Directive Put your card in for every journey, and keep it in Put your tacho on for the walkaround check Get your mode switches right Then you're probably good.
@recalcitrantable5 жыл бұрын
Oh. and make a record if you're late for a break, as soon as you park up. Then you're probably good.
